FROM THE PASTOR

My Dear Sacred Heart Parishioners, It is with great joy to announce that we finished the renovation our Parish Hall kitchen through the generosity of Don and Mary West, Frank and Lucy Rodriguez and YLI, who donated the amount for the new floor by Polytek of Redding and the new ovens. Also, we would like to thank Jose Ramirez and Hector Rubio for painting. The kitchen is now safer to use by not posing any risks for accidents.

SOME DATES TO REMEMBER: December 9 at 6pm—Advent Parish Penance Service

As we prepare for the birth of our Savior, let us make sure our hearts and minds are ready for His coming. The Sacrament of Reconciliation will give us new opportunities to receive God’s forgiveness again and will bring us back to the fold of the holy people of God. You are all invited, God will be waiting! December 12 at 5pm—Celebration of Our Lady of Guadalupe Come join our Hispanic Community in this beautiful celebration attributed to our Blessed Mother. This is to commemorate the apparition of our Blessed Mother to the poor boy, Juan Diego. Our Lady of Guadalupe is the patroness of the Americas, including the United States. The celebration will begin with the SERENATA; serenading our Blessed Mother, whose feast we celebrate, followed by the celebration of the Holy Mass and reception. There will be authentic Mexican food served! Come join our Hispanic brothers and sisters in this special faith filled celebration! December 14 at 10:30am—90th Founding Anniversary of St. Anne’s Mission in Cottonwood St. Anne’s Mission will be celebrating the 90th anniversary of the founding of their Church. Although the Catholic community existed before the founding of the actual church, it is still fitting to celebrate this very important celebration. The celebration will focus on the theme of thanksgiving to God for the gift of faith to the people of Cottonwood. The former Pastors of Sacred Heart Church will be present to grace the occasion. The new altar and ambo will also be dedicated on that day. The relic of the blood of St. John Paul II will be deposited and will remain permanent in the altar of St. Anne’s after the celebration. Their will be a reception prepared after the celebration. As one community of faith I ask you to come and be part of these important dates here in our parish!

—Fr. Eric

FLU SEASON

The flu season has come early this year. The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) reports that the incidence of flu and flu-like illnesses is “widespread” and has reached a level requiring that we enact preventive measures to mitigate the possibility of infection at Mass. In order to protect the health and well-being of everyone, Bishop Soto has issued the following directives: • The use of the Communion cup is suspended

temporarily. • Receive the Body of Christ in the hand (although

receiving on the tongue is permitted) • Do not shake hands. Offer the sign of Peace to those

around you with a simple nod, saying “peace be with you.”

• Do not hold hands during the Our Father. • Extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion are

reminded to cleanse their hands with an alcohol-based antiseptic before and after administering Holy Communion. This also applies to those who take Holy Communion to the home-bound.

The obligation to attend Mass on Sunday and other Holy Days does not apply to those who are sick. If you are sick, stay home and take of yourself. Thank you for your patience and understanding during this time. And pray for those who are sick. The administration of Holy Communion in both kinds will resume as soon as the Bishop deems it safe and prudent to do so.

We perform penance to shake ourselves free of our attachments to sin and the distractions that keep us from recognizing the presence of God in our lives. Reconciliation allows us to put God in the center of our lives. Attending an Advent Penance Service helps us prepare our hearts for the coming of the Christ Child on Christmas Day.

EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP

One day, we heard the news that a possible tornado was heading our way. We live off of a highway, and it was traveling along that very road. My wife and kids huddled in the downstairs bathroom. Not many tornadoes surface in North Carolina, so our children were particularly worried because it was something they had never contemplated happening before. The tornado never did come into our neighborhood, but it did cause one our sons to express that he needed to go to Confession as soon as possible. He hadn’t done anything too over the top sinful, but coming face-to-face with a tornado had cause him to have some second thoughts about his preparedness for meeting God. Hopefully, a tornado doesn’t make a path through your city or town this Advent. Sometimes, reminders of our mortality find their way into life. The passing of a loved one, a car accident, or a health scare can all cause us to reflect on where we are in our relationship with God. Without those moments, we can find ourselves living daily without a mindfulness of where God is in our life and if our actions are pleasing to Him … or if they drag us further away into the world. Advent is the time to take inventory of where we are with God. How are we living as good stewards and mature disciples? What do I need to make amends for in the healing power of the sacrament of Penance? A tornado may not be coming, but Jesus will be returning someday. Hopefully, you will run outside of your home to meet him, and he won’t find you huddled up afraid in your bathroom. —Tracy Earl Welliver

GOSPEL MEDITATION FOR DECEMBER 8TH

What does it mean to be worthy? There are a few different ways to approach this question. Today’s Gospel highlights two: the way of the Pharisees and the way of John the Baptist. Our faith values good works and discipleship. Perhaps, then, we “earn” our worth by adhering to the right doctrines and following the right pious practice. The Pharisees thought they were worthy. Due to their religious pedigree and proper procedures, they were self-satisfied. John the Baptist’s words to them are strong. “Do not resume to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’” Of course, Jesus (and John) don’t omit the responsibility for moral behavior. John gives the Pharisees quite a strong warning in that regard. “Produce good fruit as evidence of your repentance … every tree that does not bear good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.” It’s a question of attitude. Of disposition. It’s a matter of the heart. If anyone would be worthy in this scenario, it’s John the Baptist. Jesus himself will name him the greatest of prophets and a great man. John, however, recognizes his own lowly place in the grand scheme of things. “The one who is coming after me is mightier than I. I am not worthy to carry his sandals.” The Pharisees take pride in being “better” than others. John embraces humility in Christ being “better” than him. We don’t self-generate our own worthiness. We receive it as a gift from God. In a few short weeks, we’ll celebrate the birth of Christ. Bishop Ven. Fulton Sheen wrote about the Nativity in his “Life of Christ”: “Because [Jesus] was born in a cave, all who wish to see Him must stoop. To stoop is the mark of humility. The proud refuse to stoop and, therefore, they miss divinity.” God invites us to prepare our hearts this Advent. When you consider your own life, where are you looking for your worth? This Christmas, are you prepared to stoop?
