In fact, the statement said, DENR Secretary Ra-mon Paje had advised LGUs to look into the geohazard maps and urged the decla-ration areas identified as flood-and landslide-prone as “no habitation zone(s).”

David said the DENR-MGB would come up with an assessment and analysis in the coming days to ex-plain the reasons for the flashfloods and their impact on the two cities.

thing?)In Isla de Oro alone,

1,260 families were affected (or 5,440 people); 12 deaths reported; 15 persons miss-ing and 38 persons injured, according to data posted by the Department of Social Work and Development at the Cagayan de Oro City Central School, an evacu-ation center.

Further, PNoy said that the tragedy should be inves-tigated to prevent a repeat, as lives even of the rescuers

were lost during rescue operations.

“Para hindi maulit ang trahedyang ito, kailan-gang malaman kung saan nagkulang, kung sino ang may pagkukulang, at kung paano ito dapat panagutan,” Aquino said.

(So as not to experience the tragedy again, we must know what we lack, who has the defect, and how we should respond.)

The task force is made up of representatives from

government agencies such as the Department of Inte-rior and Local Government (DILG), Department of Social Welfare and Develop-ment (DSWD), Department of Public Works and High-ways (DPWH), Department of Science and Technology (DOST), Department of Justice (DOJ), Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), and the Mindanao Development Authority.

Meanwhile, Aquino is keen on the implementation of the total log ban in the Armm region and personally instructed newly appointed Armm OIC-Governor Mu-riv Hataman to strictly put it into operation.

THE death toll due to flash-floods spawned by tropi-cal storm ‘Sendong’ (In-

‘Sendong’ death toll reaches 1,000ternational name: Washi) reached 1,000 in Visayas and Mindanao Tuesday afternoon, and expected to

exceed this mark as search and retrieval operations by various sector continue, the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (NDRRMC) said.

NDRRMC executive di-rector Benito Ramos said they were comparing figures with Tropical Storms “Yol-ing” and “Susang” in the 1970s and “Ondoy” in 2009.

As of 3 p.m. the death toll in Cagayan de Oro is 579 while Iligan City is 283 and Dumaguete City is 138.

The total number of population affected in 260 barangays in 30 municipali-ties and 8 cities in the 13 provinces of Regions VI,

VII, IX, X, XI, CARAGA, and ARMM is 63,079 fami-lies or 338,415 persons.

Ramos said the death toll may rise as additional bodies were retrieved from the seashore of Macajalar Bay and at the Cagayan de Oro River. NDRRMC said as of 3 p.m., a total of 49 persons remained missing.

Ramos said the total number of population cur-rently served inside and outside evacuation centers is 51,083 families or 284,610 persons.

In Iligan City, half dozen funeral parlors were full to capacity and no longer accepting bodies. The first 50 or so unclaimed bodies

were buried in individual tombs at the city cemetery, Ramos said.

Agriculture damage is placed at P 1,936,415.

Meanwhile, the Philip-pine National Police (PNP) Police Community Rela-tions issued memorandum to all units alerting their respective Search and Res-cue (SAR) teams and water assets for possible deploy-ment.

Meanwhile, President Benigno S. Aquino III led the distribution of relief goods to displaced residents affected by floods due to the heavy rains spawned by tropical storm “Sendong” at an evacuation center in City Central School, Cagayan de Oro City.

Aquino talked to the evacuees, whose numbers swelled to 1,550 families composed of nearly 6,000 persons.

Atty. Araceli Solamillo, Regional Director, Depart-ment of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD-10) said the food packs con-tained 3 kilos of rice, 4 cans sardines, 5 packs, noodles, 2 cans corned beef and sachets of coffee. This is in addition to the relief goods provided by the local government and concerned private organizations.

“Earlier this week, we have also distributed non-food items like blankets, mats, used clothing among others for thousands of people,” she said.

The stockpile of rice, bottled water, used clothing and food keeps growing by the hour since Governor

On Tuesday afternoon (December 20) a truck with 50 sacks of rice from the municipal government of Maitum arrived.

As the rice was be-ing unloaded, people are walking in with what they

have––sardines, noodles, tooth paste, tooth brush.

Madaris azatids have collected 17 sacks of used clothing already and still collecting until the drop off center closes Thursday.

All public schools have become drop off points too for more donations.

The relief goods will

be delivered to the cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan three days before Christmas Day.

The Sarangani Informa-tion Office has called off its Christmas fete for the press in deference to the tragedy.

In nearby General San-tos City, Paula Astoriaga

packed used clothing from her foster sons Cocoy and Jun as she responded to the public service announce-ment over a local radio station here that the pro-vincial government of Sa-rangani and the Red Cross in General Santos City are accepting donations for the flood victims.

Zamboanga City Po-lice Office (ZCPO) direc-tor Senior Supt. Edwin de Ocampo said the incident took place around 12:15 in the morning Tuesday in Baliwasan Moret.

De Ocampo identified the victims as Police Officer 1 (PO1) Jose Vasquez of the Police Station 6 and his daughter Krisleigh Dawn, a nursing student at the Ateneo de Zamboanga Uni-versity (ADZU).

Vasquez died on the spot while his daughter died while undergoing treat-ment at the hospital, De Ocampo said.

GSIS said members who are employed in agencies that are not suspended be-cause of non-payment and non-remittance of premi-ums and loans can avail of the loan.

Member-applicant can apply for the loan through GWAPS kiosk using their eCard or their UMID eCard.

“Members who do not have an eCard Plus or UMID eCard but who are eligible to apply for the loan can apply via over-the-counter (OTC),” the state pension fund said.

“Proceeds of emergency loan applications filed via OTC will be credited to a temporary eCard which the GSIS has begun to issue,” it said.

GSIS said the loan pro-gram carries an interest rate of six percent per yeaar computed in advance, and is payable in three years in equal monthly installment.

It said a Loan Redemp-tion Insurance (LRI) of 1.2 percent of the gross loan amount shall be deducted from the proceeds of the loan.

It added that “member-borrowers with outstanding emergency loans shall be allowed to renew the loan if they have paid at least 12 monthly installments but not earlier than the anni-versary date of the previous loan.” (PNA)

The President visited Cagayan de Oro City to oversee the conditions of the residents there and direct government response to the disaster following the devastation of Typhoon Sendong on Saturday.

The disaster left hun-dreds of people dead while scores remain missing.

Thousands have been living in temporary shelters. Local Cagayan de Oro City officials raised their con-cerns with the President during a briefing held at the Philippine Air Force base in Lumbia airport. The chief executive assured them that there is enough government funds for relief assistance and rehabilitation to help ease the flight of the victims.

Govt to declare typhoon hit areas in Vismin under state of national calamity

CAGAYAN de Oro City––The government will declare a state of national calamity areas in the Visayas and Mindanao affected by Typhoon Sendong, President Benigno S. Aquino III said on Tuesday.

Aside from the fund that will come from the national government, the President said there are sup-ports coming from foreign donors, some in the form of loans and others providing equipment and expertise.

After meeting officials in Cagayan de Oro, the

President flew to Iligan City, to also assess the situation there. He is also scheduled to lead the distribution of relief goods in Iligan City which is also hardly hit by Typhoon Sendong.

After visiting Iligan City, the President will go back to Cagayan de Oro to distribute assistance to the affected residents. By noon, the President departs from Cagayan de Oro to Dumaguete City, another devastated area.

According to the Na-tional Disaster Risk Reduc-tion Management Council (NDRRMC), the death toll in Region 10 now reaches more than 800 people. With many still unaccounted for.

Thus, Interior and Local Government Secretary Jesse M. Robredo on Thursday asked provincial governors, city and municipal may-ors and punong barangays throughout the country in an effort to minimize casualties that goes with the revelry this holiday season especially on New Year’s day.

“Let’s strive to minimize or even go for “zero casual-ties” in firecracker-related injuries and incidence of fire this Yuletide season,” Robredo said.

“And the idea of desig-nating a specific firecracker and pyrotechnic area in a community could help a lot in attaining our objective,” he added.

The DILG secretary en-joined local chief execu-tives to regulate the sale, manufacture, distribution and use of firecrackers and other pyrotechnic devices in their respective localities as mandated by Republic Act 7183.

In his directive, Robredo urged local authorities to see to it that only the fol-lowing types of firecrackers

are manufactured, sold, distributed or used namely, baby rocket, “bawang,” small triangulo, pulling of string, paper cups, el Diablo, Judah’s belt, sky rocket (kwitis) and other types equivalent in explosive content.

For pyrotechnic devices, those that are allowed are sparklers, luces, fountain, jumbo, mabuhay, Roman candle, trompillo, airwolf , whistle device, butterfly, among others.

Robredo also directed local officials to take the lead in the conduct of an information campaign on the proper use of all kinds of firecrackers and pyrotechnic devices, and to be watch-ful of radical groups that may take advantage of the holiday season’s merriment for their lawless designs.

THINK a minute.This is a true story

about a young lady who got so tired of living with her strict parents that she ran away from home. But she soon found out that life was not easy on her own.

She couldn’t find a job, and it didn’t take long for her friends to get sick of her living off of their kindness so they kicked her out.

We l l , t h i s y o u n g 19-year-old girl got so desperate she decided to start making money by becoming a prostitute.

Years passed. Her father died. Her mother grew older. And the daughter’s life just got worse and terribly unhappy. But she still would not write or go home to see her mother.

One day the mother heard that her daughter was seen in a certain part

The unlocked door

Christmas

Walay tubig

of town, so she went there looking for her daughter.

She went to every store and cheap hotel asking to put a picture on their walls. It was a picture of herself, now a gray-haired woman.

Beside her picture was this message to her daugh-ter which simply said: “I still love you! Please come home!”

Months went by and

nothing happened. Then one day the daughter who was now very skinny and sick wandered into one of those hotels.

You can imagine how shocked she was to see her mother’s picture on the wall of that dirty, cheap hotel.

As she read her mother’s message to her she began to cry.

That night she started walking the many miles back to her home.

It was early in the morn-ing when she finally arrived at the front door of her parent’s house.

She began to knock but the door was already open.

Afraid that someone had broken into her par-ent’s house, she ran inside and woke up the sleeping old lady and told her she had finally come home.

Mother and daughter

began to cry as they held each other.

The daughter said: “I thought someone had bro-ken open the door!”

But the mother shook her head and answered gently: “My dear, from the day you left I’ve kept the door unlocked.”

You know, it does not matter to Jesus Christ what wrong things you’ve done or how badly you’ve lived.

The moment you decide to turn to Him and ask His forgiveness, He will always accept you and give you another chance.

Jesus is the One Who will enable you to start a new life all over again, but this time living His way with Him in charge.

He said that’s the only way you’ll ever have real love, peace of mind, and satisfaction that lasts.

Just Think a Minute.

Sayop tingali ng giin-gon sa Cowd nga: “The Cagayan de Oro Water Dis-trict (COWD) management assured the public that it is “doing everything ...to re-store normal (water) supply operations at the soonest possible time.”

THERE are 3 stages in a man’s life. The first stage: He believes in Santa Claus. The second stage: He does not believe in Santa Claus. The third stage: He be-lieves HE IS Santa Claus.

Ho. Ho. Ho. For this reason, we are making a shopping list and checking it twice, so friends will know we are not naughty but nice.

Christmas is just an-other excuse to indulge in our predilection for pleasures and things, he-donists that we are.

In our crass culture of materialism, Santa Claus with his big bag of good-ies is a more fitting icon for the commercial fes-tival that Christmas has become.

Ironically, the l itt le child Jesus Christ, who is the reason for the season that bears His name, is all but forgotten and buried in the clutter of wrapping paper.

Don’t look for Jesus in

parties or malls. He is not invited there. He is in the quiet stable of your heart when your knees are bent and your head is bowed in prayer.

Advent is a t ime of spiritual preparation. But it doesn’t look like we’re preparing for the coming of the Prince of Peace, but the arrival of the godfather of gifts. We prefer blingdom to God’s kingdom.

We desire entertain-ment more than enlight-enment. That is why we are stumbling in the dark,

because we choose not the light.

For Christmases past, I’m ashamed to admit that I spent this holy season not as a faithful follower of the Son of Man, but as a faithless worshipper of the sun of fun.

Jesus’ pitying glance has finally convicted me. I look at our table groaning with calorific enticements, and I am put to shame. I hear the moan of hungry children with bloated stomachs, and it’s my turn to groan.

What gall to gobble up a lavish feast while outside my comfy cocoon a needy family is making do with a tiny plate of rice sprinkled with lots of salt. This is their entire Noche Buena.

Guilty thoughts like this point an accusing finger at me, and the paksiw get stuck in my throat.

The newborn King is wrapped in ukay-ukay, but here I am strutting in my designer attire. Dis-graceful!

Mercifully, it’s not too late for us to come to our senses. Christmas is not yet over. We still have time for a spiritual make-over. I made a pledge that I will make my Christmas mean-ingful, by daily scattering seeds of generosity.

Everyday, at least one person who is in need of charity shall receive a blessing from me, either in cash or in kindness.

Instead of a Misa de Gallo, mine will be a No-vena de Amor. With per-severance, this could turn into a lifestyle of giving. Then I shall know the in-effable joy of celebrating Christmas everyday.

Yes, be Santa Claus. Be a bearer of gifts to the poor children that Santa Claus forgot.

Are you celebrating a Merry Christmas or a Blessed Christmas? The Ho-Ho-Ho is not the voice to follow. Listen to the angels sing, and you will find the newborn King!

In its advisor y, the COWD management ex-plained that their qual-ity control laboratory in Pilot de Lara, Macasandig has been totally damaged rendering the agency in-capable of monitoring the level of residual chlorine in its distribution lines.

The COWD will also be undertaking the clean-ing of collector wells; re-habilitation of 10 elec-tric motors; testing and rehabilitation of six (6) transformers; rehabilita-tion of 11 motor control-lers; disinfection of six (6)production wells; and testing and commission-ing of facilities in the next 31 days.

THE Cagayan de Oro City Water District would like to inform our concessionaires and the public in general that the typhoon SEN-DONG has wrought extensive damage to our facilities.

Our main booster pumping station in Macasandig was com-pletely damaged as it was almost totally submerged in floodwater at the height of the typhoon along with six of our production wells. Interruption in power supply has also affected the operations of some of our pumping facilities. We are currently operating using our generators. Some production wells particularly in Bugo, Tablon and Macasandig have already been operational. Delivery of water from our bulk supplier, the Rio Verde Water Consortium, Inc., has also not been possible since Saturday due to the damage on the bridge crossing where supply to our take-off point would have been channeled. This brings the total supply shortfall to around 70% in the west service area and 46% in the central and east service area. Total estimated cost of damage is about P30, 400,000.00. Below are our completely damaged properties:

1. MACASANDIG Booster Pumping Station, Pilot De Lara, Macasandig)

2. COWD Laboratory (for Quality Control), Pilot De Lara, Ma-casandig

3. Production Well #1, Pilot De Lara, Macasandig4. Production Well #4, Biasong, Macasandig5. Production Well #7, Biasong, Macasandig6. Production Well #9, Biasong, Macasandig7. Balulang to the whole west service area)Meanwhile, COWD is utilizing all its available resources to

facilitate water delivery to the affected areas. COWD has also sought the assistance of the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) and private individuals and groups with fire trucks to assist in distributing water by allowing them free access to our hydrants along the highway from Lapasan to Bugo. For their support we are indeed truly grateful.

A cluster of public faucets have also been installed beside our fire hydrants to allow our concessionaires easy access to water. The public is encouraged to go to any of the facilities identified below with their containers so they may collect water for their storage and consumption.

1. PW#3A - Pumping Station ( Faucets) (Near Macasandig Elementary School)

2. M.U.S.T. - Faucets (Near Mindanao University of Science & Technology)

been totally damaged and therefore has rendered us incapable of monitoring the level of residual chlorine in our distribution lines, COWD strongly advises the consuming public to BOIL THE WATER BEFORE DRINKING for their own safety and protection.

All efforts to restore the damaged facilities to normal operat-ing condition are being exerted. To attain this, COWD shall be implementing the following activities in the next 31 days:

-Cleaning of Collector Wells-Rehabilitation of Electric Motors ? 10 units-Testing and Rehabilitation of Transformers- 6 units-Rehabilitation of Motor Controllers ? 11 units-Disinfection of Production Wells ? 6 production wells-Testing and Commissioning of FacilitiesThese events are fortuitous and totally beyond our control.

Nevertheless, we would like to assure the public that COWD is doing everything in its capacity to restore normal supply opera-tions the soonest possible time. We are calling for sobriety and patience in this time of crisis.

Thank you for your continued support and understanding.COWD MANAGEMENT

Started by resident artist and provincial administrator Patrick U. Gabutina in 2005, the capitol grounds have become the site for installation artworks such as the Canopy of Lights he jointly conceived with fellow artist Cris Rollo (2006), the Lantay by Errol Balcos (2008), and the 1,001 Lights of Hope, Joy and Redemption of Ivan F. Macarambon (2010). “Governor Oscar S. Moreno gave us a free hand to decide how we would decorate the park during Christmas,” Mr. Gabutina recalls. “He just told me to do something the people would enjoy.” Installation art is character-ized by the use of indigenous materials selected for their “evocative” qualities. They are oft en site-specifi c, and are designed to exist only in the location for which they were created. Unlike traditional sculpture which stresses its focus on form, contemporary installation art emphasizes the “intention” of the artist, much like the con-ceptual art in vogue during the 1960s, Mr. Gabutina said. enjoy watching, especially dur-ing evenings,” Mr. Macarambon said. As a bow to the plague of global warming and climate change, this year’s installation artwork that Mr. Macarambon has titled “2,000 Guiding Stars” was inspired by a seminar-workshop conducted by the Product Development and Design Center of the Phil-ippines (PDDCP) he joined with fellow artist Chris Gomez which included a module on “ecodesign.” Th e artwork features reused four-liter plastic containers (lo-cally known as galon) wrapped in the plastic material locally known as charol, commonly used by carenderias to cover their tables. “We want to bring pure light

to the visitors of the park, as a symbol of purity and goodness,” Mr. Macarambon said. “With the recycling of the common plastic galon, we attempt to elevate this everyday mate-rial to the level of minimalist installation art.” Th e galon has been cut to a simple cylinder and adorned with a simple tail of white charol and changes shape with the weather: closing their fronds like cocoons during wet and cold spells, or opening up and waving with the wind like con-fetti from heaven. “Th e simplicity of the design underscores the message of purity and goodness, quali-ties that the Messiah, a child born in a manger, posses,” he added. I’ll send you all my love every day in a letterSealed with a kiss

Yes, it’s gonna be a cold, lonely summerBut I’ll fill the emptiness

I’ll send you all my dreams every day in a letterSealed with a kiss

I’ll see you in the sunlightI’ll hear your voice everywhere

I’ll run to tenderly hold youBut, baby, you won’t be there

I don’t wanna say goodbye for the summer,Knowing the love we’ll miss

So, let us make a pledge to meet in SeptemberAnd seal it with a kiss

RIGHT after he was ru-mored to have died, rocker Jon Bon Jovi immediately came out and proved that he was in fact, alive and well.

In the official Twitter account of the band Bon Jovi (@BonJovi), the band told fans to “rest assured that Jon is fine.”

It likewise attached a pic-ture of 49-year-old Jon, or also known as John Francis Bongiovi Jr., holding a piece of paper saying “heaven looks a lot like New Jersey” with the date December 19, 2011.

The band’s tweet was

Rumors about Jon’s alleged death circulated around Twitter more than

happy to know that their favorite rocker was still alive, with some of them flooding the band’s Facebook page with sighs of relief. — RSJ, GMA News
