Not quite! Candy canes were
first made about 350 years ago
as plain hard sugar sticks. The
original candy was complete-
ly white and straight. In the
early days of Christmas trees,
candy and cookies were used
to decorate the trees. Then
a choirmaster at the Cologne
Cathedral in Germany bent the
sugar-sticks into canes to rep-
resent a shepherd’s staff. The
all-white candy canes were
given out to children during
the long-winded nativity ser-
vices. The clergymen’s custom
of handing out candy canes
during Christmas services
spread throughout Europe and
later to America. Sometime
around 1900s, the red stripes
appeared and then peppermint
and other flavors were added.
Ain’t that sweet?
