    December 2013

If you could go back in time and meet

anyone in history, who would it be?

Thats a question an interviewer will oftenask a celebrity or public figure to gain in-sight or get the conversation rolling. Well, you and I arent on a talk show and no-bodys interviewing us, but its still aninteresting question to consider.

As Christians, some of the historical fig-ures wed probably like to go back andmeet are the people weve already met onthe pages of Holy Scripture. Those whodont trust in Christ and His Word mightlook at us strangely if we said wed like togo back and talk to Adam or Abraham,Enoch or Elijah. For them these people andtheir lives are more the stuff of legend andOnce upon a time. Yet, you and I knowdifferently and we know for certain. GodsWord is true. The people of the Bible are

real historical figures. The places andevents are real history.

Whenever December rolls around, ourminds drift back to that first Christmas aswell as the Advent events leading up to thenight of Christs birth. As my mind driftsback to the Old Testament promises, theres lots of people along the way with

whom Id like to talk. Itd be fun to talk toAbraham and David. Id like to ask Isaiahwhat it was like to receive those promises.. . the virgin will be with Child. . .untous a Son is given.

It would be amazing to go back and meetth l f th t fi t Ch i t Id lik

    Advent Interviews & Christmas Conversations

While we all perhaps have questions wedlike to ask people in the Bible, its im-

portant for us to remember that God hasgiven us everything we need in the Bible. While God doesnt answer every questionwe might have, in His Word He does an-swer every question we need answered forour salvation. Who is the baby in the man-ger? Our Lord and Savior, Jesus the Mes-siah, our brother and our God. Why did Hecome? To rescue us from sin and death. What did He do?He came lowly and livedthe perfect life we couldnt. He died hum-bly and on that cross accomplished thework of redemption. He rose victoriouslyon the third day. He came to earth to earnfor us heaven.

No, were not going back in time to inter-view Joseph, Mary, and those shepherds. But, that doesnt mean were never going

to meet them. Because Christ came . . .because the Holy Spirit by His Word hasworked faith in our hearts . . . we will meetJoseph, Mary, and those shepherds.Christmas means we will spend eternitywith God and all His saints. In that gloryour greatest joy will be meeting our Saviorand God face to face. A further joy will bemeeting David and Daniel, James and

John, Peter and Paul and every person inthe Bible who died trusting in the comingSavior or in the Savior who had come. That joy also includes meeting once againall our Christian loved ones of Christmasespast.

    Pebbles From the ROC...

In preparation for the 10thAnniversary Open House, teens were asked what they liked about THE ROC. Wewere so happy to hear many teens mention Bible/Talk Time where the truths of Gods Word are taught andChrist is proclaimed as the Savior of all. It was also positive to hear the teens say that no one at THE ROC

looked down on them but treated them with respect and accepted them as fellow sinners in need of Christ.

All are invited to stop in at the ROC anytime to see the Christ-Centered Youth Center we all support. You mayalso consider being a volunteer. Such helpers are always needed. Stop in and talk to Pastor Mueller about the

The Work of Our Pastors & Others: Baptisms at Saint Marks?

Spanish Outreach - Help for Addiction - Christmas Cards Page 5

    Spanish Outreach...

November Parent-Teacher conferences went well for thesixty percent of our Mexican families with children at St.Marks School. Only a few years ago, upper grade students(especially boys) often leaked out of our school. That hasnthappened much lately: thanks to terrific labor on the part ofour teachers and exceedingly faithful pastoral work from

    Pastor Dale.

Early November experienced the baptism of GiovanniPineda, son of one former student at our school.

The Spanish Language congregation celebrated Thanksgiv-ing with a special service and a turkey-and-fixings fiesta onthe evening of Sunday, November 24th. Gracias! to thegenerous anonymous donors.

Thanksgiving and the end of the year remind us to thank ourexcellent volunteers for another faithful year of work. Theseinclude: John Birsching, Ora Kuckkan, Jim Lillo, and LeahUttech.

Omar & Violeta, with Hannah & Miliani, Karen, with

Estephany, Alexander, & Juliet, and Javier & Ana, with

Amy, all recently joined us under adult confirmation. Mean-time, Pastor Walther continues to instruct Abel & Mayra, who have Katie & Idir.

December turns the Biblical page in worship from Hechos(Acts) toMalaquas (Malachi) & Juan 1 (John 1).

Our Christmas service will include the usual special songs, readings, sermon, & prayerswith a fiesta to follow(Gracias!in advance to the generous anonymous donor). Ittakes place Sunday, December 22nd, at 6:30 PM.

Help with a Little Mentioned Sin

Use of pornography is an epidemic in mod-ern day America. A large majority ofAmerican men and a large number ofwomen view pornography. One reputablewebsite suggests that 50% of Christianmen and 20% of Christian women admitaddiction to porn.

Your pastors can only imagine the magni-tude of harm this device of Satan is impos-ing upon guilt-ridden consciences. Wewant to do what we can to help: with fulland free pardon from Christ, and with res-urrection power from him to overcometemptation, more and more.

    So, consider the following:

    1. Dont hesitate to phone a pastor toschedule a visit, if porn is a problem foryou. Your pastor can offer you forgivenessand assistance from your Savior.

    2. Check out our church bodys website onthe issue: conquerorsthroughchrist.net. Orcontact a WELS Christian counselor viachristianfamilysolutions.org .

I have been crucified with Christ, and I nolonger live, but Christ lives in me. The lifeI live in the body I live by faith in the Sonof God, who loved me, and gave himselffor me (Galatians 2:20).

SPECIAL GIFT RECEIVED FOR ORGAN RESTORATIONSt. Marks has a long range program for the maintenance of our buildings and their con-

tents. A year or so ago it was brought to the Ministry Councils attention that our organ is inneed of some major repairs and maintenance. The last time anything was done extensivelyon the organ was in 1979, almost 35 years ago. Since the project will be very expensive, theMinistry Council put it down the list after some more pressing things that need to be done.

Recently a family asked if there was someplace they could designate a portion of an estatethat the congregation would be receiving from their loved one. It was suggested that theymight designate it for the organ restoration. They indicated that would be fine with them.

We have received a gift of over $182,000 from the estate of Elsie Sellnow who died this year at the age of 105.This gift has been set aside for the restoration of our organ.

The Board of Pastoral Ministry has appointed an organ committee to begin work on planning for the restoration ofour organ. The committee members are: Jaymie DeFrain, Cheryl Hochmuth, Kevin Loersch, Randy Roeseler andPastors Jensen and Werner. The committee met this month with an organ consultant who will be assisting thecommittee as they move forward. The consultant indicated that this may be a 5 year project.

We thank the Lord for this gift from the estate of Elsie and Bill Sellnow, and we thank their family for designatingit for this project. Our organ was built in 1924 and is almost 90 years old. It is the major musical instrument thathas accompanied the congregation in the singing of praises to our Savior Jesus.

The congregation and the voters will be receiving more information as well as actions that will need to be taken as

    we proceed.

Advent ServicesSpecial midweek Advent Services will be held each Wednesday for the month of December. These services are

meant to get our hearts and minds focused on Jesus. These service are different from the regular Sunday Services.

So we encourage all of our families to attend the Advent Services in addition to the regular Sunday worship

Emergency School ClosingsThe winter weather often brings weather related school closings. When the weather forecast is for snow, ice, or otherrelated issues school may be closed. Please watch and listen to the news carefully for announcements about school

closings. St. Marks School goes with the Watertown Unified Public school District for all school closings. IfWatertown Public is closed, so is St. Marks. If Watertown public schools close early because of impending weatherrelated issues, then we close early as well. We will make every effort to call you and let you know that school is closingearly. If at any time, any parent wants to pick up their children early because of weather problems, they may do so.Parents will never be asked to drive children to school if the parents feel that the roads are unsafe to drive. We pray for atolerable winter and ask God to protect our families during these winter months. If you have any questions, please call theschool office.**************************************************************************************************
