They expected that return to come within their lifetime, so this was not abstract in any way. It colored how they thought about decisions, and what their priorities of daily life should be. This is a tension we name each week in the Eucharist when we say, “Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.” Advent is a season that catches us preparing for new life and the birth of the infant Jesus. At the same time, we also hear the prophets railing on about a very different sort of arrival. The danger for me is to think this is some abstract theological concept, or something that those poor folks back in ancient times had to struggle with. If I am honest though, this tension of the already and the not yet is a daily tension of the Christian life. When I am centered, I see signs of the presence of God in each face and encounter that comes my way. When I am centered, I can look with genuine grief and compassion at things in our world that clearly are still longing for redemption. If I am praying as I should, then these tensions and ambiguity are held in the loving care of God. If I am distracted and overcome with activity, I can start to think it is my individual responsibility to right all the wrongs I see and wonder when on earth God is going to bother to show up. This passage from second Peter is a wonderful reminder about the tension we live in. Because when I find myself struggling with impatience, or wondering where God has gone, that is actually a gift. Because maybe it is me that needs a bit more time. Maybe I need to realize my need to turn more fully to God. There is a very different time horizon at work with the eternal, and that may be the best gift of all. There is not a pressure to get it all done today, because when God beholds us with the eyes of love, we have all the time we need. My hope is each of us will listen to that invitation this season. Then Christ will again be born again, and return. Blessings for a Holy Advent and Christmas. Beth+ “Do not ignore this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like one day. The Lord is not slow about his promise, as some think of slowness, but is patient with you, not wanting any to perish, but all to come to repentance.” 2 Peter 3:8-9

O ne of the tensions for the first Christians was that they were constantly in a state of acknowledging the presence of the Risen Christ as palpable and real, while at the same time waiting for his return. They expected that return to come within their lifetime, so

this was not abstract in any way. Christian Formation A

A warm welcome to Brother James R. Dennis, who comes to St. Mark’s from St. Luke’s. James is a

member of the Anglican Order of Preachers, better known as the Dominicans. He began his work with the Order in 2008, and became a novice in 2010. He took his life vows in August of 2012, and currently serves as the Chancellor of the Order and as one of the formation directors, teaching the required study of St. Thomas Aquinas. His ministry also includes involvement in the liturgy and working with those who are terminal and their families. He will share more about his vocation at our Adult Formation on December 14th at 10:10 a.m. in Gish Hall. Brother James regularly writes for the diocesan magazine, and teaches and preaches around the Diocese of West Texas. He is also an attorney and a writer. He has co-written three novels and is currently working on a volume of poetry to be published next year. He lives in San Antonio with two ill-behaved dogs.

J oin us for some time this Advent for intentional quiet and reflection. It is easy in the midst of the holidays to forget that Advent has particular gifts to offer.

The Rev. Beth Knowlton will guide us through a series of meditations and reflections to help us prepare for the arrival of Christ once again. Please RSVP to Elaine Enloe at [email protected] by Tuesday, December 9. Lunch will be provided.

ADVENT QUIET DAY Creating Space for God - Especially When We Think We Are Too Busy

December 13, 10am-2pm

A dult Confirmation On November 2, thirteen adults participated in the life of the church by being confirmed, officially received into the church, and reaffirming baptismal vows.

Nearly all of them were already members, some for many years. The service that day, led by Bishop Lillibridge, was a beautiful time of rededication as we all reaffirmed our Baptismal Covenant. Neither confirmation or reception are required to be a member of the parish; rather, these pastoral rites offer a wonderful opportunity to formalize relationships and reaffirm our common life in Christ which we all share together here at St. Mark’s. Those who participated were Nicole Campbell, Susan Guess, Allison Hays Lane, Tiffany Kimbrell, Carol Lee Klose, Bryce Milligan, Mary Milligan, Annette Nixon, Patrick Nixon, Elizabeth Raney, Neel Scott, Bob Scott, and Veronica Segovia. This spring there will be another opportunity to participate in these pastoral rites, which will culminate in the Bishop’s visit on April 26, 2015. Stay tuned for details in the next issue of The Messenger.

Save the Date:

The Parish-wide Retreat will be held May 1-3, 2015, at the Mustang Island Conference Center. Programming for all ages

will be provided. Registration will begin in January, so look for details in the new year!

Please sign up for the role you would like. For the main characters, we will draw names to determine casting. Parents of children ages 3-1st grade must remain with their child(ren) at all times. The Cookie Walk is a wonderful yearly success because of the many beautiful holiday treats lovingly prepared by members of the parish and supporters of the Choir Tour Fund. We would like to reach 900 dozen this year! There will be a drop-off time on Saturday morning, December 20 from 10:00am-12:00pm in the kitchen. Here are some guidelines to help you prepare:

Please make 10 dozen cookies of one or two kinds (10 dozen each).

Please put cookies in a container marked with your name and phone number if you would like it saved for you, clearly marking the name of the cookie and whether or not they contain nuts.

Cookies may be baked ahead of time and frozen.

You may bring them to the church to be stored in the church’s freezer.

Since this is a holiday event, cookies should be “holiday attractive” and your very best! Save the Rice Krispy treats, etc. for another time. Also, smaller cookies are easier to make and tend to fit better in the boxes.

If you have questions, please don’t hesitate to contact any member of the St. Mark’s Choir. Thank you so much in advance for your participation. We are very grateful to you.

Please call or email Murphy Brumlik at 274-8000 or [email protected] if you intend to participate so we can anticipate the number of tables that will be needed. Thank you again.

CHRISTMAS TO THE STREET BBQ

The night’s hard work will be served in Gosnell Hall to those individuals and families less fortunate. Last year we fed over 400 and this year should be just as busy. In addition to lunch we will also hand out blankets and goodie bags that have been collected by the St. Mark’s “212 Ministry.”

Invite your family and friends to join you for lunch and share in the event!

Christmas to the Street began 10 years ago as an outreach ministry led by the St. Mark’s Youth and Kitchen Ministries. The goal was simple: provide a generous home-cooked meal of brisket and sausage with all the fixin’s to our neighbors in downtown San Antonio. The response and support from the community has continued to grow each year.

Four years ago that vision was expanded as we embraced a new partnership with the Haven for Hope Center for services to the homeless community. In addition to the roughly 500 meals served by our youth and volunteers at St. Mark’s for lunch two teams serve over 1000 at the Haven for Hope campus through the partnership with St. Vincent De Paul and the San Antonio Food Bank. Altogether, Christmas to the Street 2014 will serve nearly 2000 warm meals to hungry men, women and children.

Christmas to the Street is a ministry carried out in partnership with the community, including St. Mark's parish budget, private donations, and volunteers.

(Please review the opportunities below and contact Todd Allison at [email protected] for more details)

No Ties Allowed Pit Crew

(6pm Friday, December 19- 3pm Saturday, December 20) An annual tradition for the men of the parish. Volunteers will work in shifts of up to three teams to assist with the BBQ and smoking of roughly 60 briskets, 4000 links of sausage, and a few other items. Things will kick-off Friday evening, December 19, with a dinner and run through the end of lunch and clean up. Contact: Joel Martin ([email protected]) or Craig Stokes ([email protected])

Kitchen Crew

(Shifts: 9am-11am, 11am-1pm, 1pm-3pm; Saturday, December 20) Preparing everything for over 2000 meals takes a lot of hands. Cleaning up from it does too. Three shifts of volunteers will work behind the scenes in the kitchen on Saturday helping keep the serving line going. Contact: Todd Allison ([email protected])

Haven for Hope Crew(s)

(3pm-7pm; Saturday, December 20)

For our third year volunteers will provide and help serve roughly 1200 meals at Haven for Hope in partnership with the San Antonio Food Bank and St. Vincent de Paul Society. Volunteers will meet at St. Mark’s at 3pm on Saturday, December 20 to load the food and transport it to the Haven for Hope campus. Following set up and serving dinner in the main dining hall and in Prospects Courtyard teams will wrap things up around 7pm. Due to security and space this opportunity is limited to volunteers ages 18 and older and you must have a valid ID. Contact: Pat Bridwell ([email protected])

s Upcoming Sunday mornings at 10:10 a.m.

You and your children are invited to Gosnell Hall on Sunday morning December 21 at 10:10 a.m. for an Advent Event. You’ll find tables with kid-friendly crafts and activities to remember the REAL reason for the season.

Please join us again this year as 212 Ministry collects new and gently-used clean blankets for those less fortunate. Somewhere there is a person who is cold, and you can do something about it! It is that time of the year again when the temperatures are falling but the number of homeless people in the streets are increasing. Each year we collect more blankets than the last. Our goal this year is to collect over 400 blankets. Even one blanket can make a difference! We need your help to make that goal a reality and to ensure that those who are less fortunate are able to stay safe and warm during this winter. Bring your new or gently-used clean blankets to the 2nd floor anytime between now and mid-December. For your convenience, you can bring a gift card to Target or Walmart, and Gail will do the shopping for you. The blankets will be distributed at Christmas to the Street on December 20 at St Mark’s. Questions? Contact Gail Jackins.

All St Mark’s families are invited to a child-friendly Communion instruction for children and parents on Saturday, January 10 with Reverend Beth. We’ll gather in Gosnell Hall for snack, then kid-friendly Instructed Eucharist in church! Nursery available for infants. Any questions? Ask Reverend Beth or Carol, or Miss Gail. Please email Gail, so we’ll know how many people to expect. [email protected]

Please pack a diaper bag or lunch for your child. RSVP so we can properly plan for your little one. Call the church office at 226-2426 or email Janet at [email protected]. Last day to register is Wednesday, December 10 before 5:00pm.

The Tatum family building a nativity scene at Lego Night.

O n January 4, we invite you to bring one of the kings from your own Nativity Scene at your home and add it to the Nativity Scene in church! If you forget, or you’re out of

town, bring him on January 11. There will be a special table for the kings at the front corner of the church, by the church nativity scene. This will be one way that we can continue the spirit of Christmas throughout the Twelve Days of Christmas. Please be sure to tape your name to the bottom of your King, or write it on the bottom of the figurine (so he can be returned to you). The Bible indicates what the three gifts are, but never mentions how many kings there were. The kings or “wise men” came to worship the baby Jesus and we are “wise people” who worship him, too, as we sing in the carol “O come, let us adore him, Christ the Lord”. The kings followed the star to Bethlehem and arrived on the day we call Epiphany, January 6, the twelfth day of Christmas. After the 9:00 service on January 4, families can gather in Gosnell Hall to learn about Epiphany and make crafts to take home for January 6. We’ll gather around a piano and sing a few favorite Christmas Carols in Gosnell Hall, too! If you have left-over fruitcake or holiday cookies, bring them for a snack to share with friends at church!

Bring a King Sunday, January 4th in anticipation of the Epiphany
