Ladies, don’t forget . . .. . . the Fashion Show, “What Not to Wear to a Christmas

Party” coming up on Tuesday, December 4 at 2:00 PM. This is a fundraiser for the Christmas Stocking Project for home-less children. There are over 18,000 homeless children in the Valley. All proceeds and cereal bars will go to this project. Special note: EVERYBODY in SSV is welcome to drop off a box of cereal bars in the Activities Office. (See flyer on page 10 for details.)

Don’t miss . . .. . . the Holiday Light Parade on Saturday, December 8

at 5:00 PM. The Desert Ridge High School Marching Band will be heading up the parade. Decorate your golf cart, bi-cycle or roller skates and come to the Activities Parking Lot (APL) for staging. Parade route is: starting at the APL, heads south on Springwood Blvd. to Golf III intersection, north on Springwood to Kilarea and back to the Activities Parking Lot.

Parade participants are asked to bring three dozen cook-ies to the Superstition Room to share with the band after the parade. Coffee and hot chocolate will be provided.

FREE . . .. . . mini performance by the Brinton Elementary School

band will be at Coffee Time on December 11. Several SSV residents volunteer at the school and this is the school’s thank you to our Village. Come meet the volunteers and enjoy the music.

Many Thanks...…to the great volunteers who decorated the Auditorium

for the Christmas holidays. I’m sure that we will all enjoy them every time we are in the Auditorium. Again, thank you all.

Happy HolidaysMany thanks to the Holiday Decorating Committee headed

by Karen Paulin for the great job they do bringing holiday cheer to Sunland Springs Village. Karen has been in charge for several years now, and it is a big job putting together a decorating plan, purchasing the decorations, and recruiting people to put them up and take them down. Her team has to work hard, some years in cold weather. I have seen them all bundled up cheerfully passing decorations to each other, and it felt like I was back in New England for Christmas.

2013 AssessmentsThe 2013 annual assessment of $625 is due January 1.

There is a 15 day grace period for mail delays and bank posting delays. If it is not posted at Rossmar’s bank by January 15, it is late, and you are subject to late fees.

By the time you read this, many of you have received the annual statement, but every year for various reasons a few people do not get their statements. If you have not received your statement by December 15, call me at 480-354-8758. Remember, your payment is due on January 1 whether or not you receive a statement.

Holiday VisitorsDecember is a popular month for friends and families to

visit Sunland Springs Village. Remember to advise your guests to follow the SSV rules. Children’s hours at the Springwood pool are noon to 2:00 PM and at the San Tan pool they are 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM. You must accompany your guests of any age when they use the pools, Fitness Centers or Billiards Room, but you can purchase a pass in the Activities Office so you do not need to accompany your adult guests who are staying overnight.

One last note: I get calls every year about children driving golf carts. Our streets are city streets so only licensed driv-ers are allowed to drive vehicles of any kind - including golf carts - on those streets.

Tickets are selling fast . . .. . . for the “Holiday Pops” with the Salt River Lite brass

band on Tuesday, December 11 at 7:00 PM in our Audito-rium. This lively and magical show of Christmas classics will capture the holiday spirit for all us. AND Farnsworth Development will be providing a sweet treat for everyone. Invite your friends and families. Tickets are available in the Activities Office for $10/pp.

The gift of life . . .. . . is precious and YOU can help. United Blood Ser-

vice’s bloodmobile will be here on Tuesday, December 27. The demand for blood is extremely severe during the holidays and we can help meet that demand. Our goal is 40 units of blood which will help 120 people. Will you give a gift of life? Sign up TODAY.

New Year’s Eve . . .. . . dinner and dance tickets are still available for our

New York time celebration. Dinner, featuring Grilled Steak, Garden Fresh Salad, Baked Potato, Vegetable and Dessert will be served at 6:00 PM with dancing to the Desert Drift-ers from 7:00 – 10:00 PM. At 10:00 PM (Midnight in New York) we will ring in the New Year with a live telecast from New York City’s Time Square, saying HAPPY NEW YEAR and GOOD NIGHT to our friends and neighbors. Tickets are $25/pp in the Activities Office This is always a sellout. Buy your tickets today. (See flyer on page 11 for full details.)

Last minute Christmas shopping . . .. . . is available in the Activities Office. A Coyote coupon

book would make a great gift or stocking stuffer for Cousin Henry that shows up unexpectedly on Christmas morning. The book offers huge savings throughout the East Valley and the commission puts $$$ back into Sunland Springs Village. Stop and shop in the Activities Office. (Sorry, we don’t gift wrap.)

May the love and joy of Christmas be with each of you.

It’s That Time Again…..THE 2013 VILLAGE DIRECTORY DATA IS BEING

PREPARED NOW!!By: Allen Schaeffer, Chairman, Communications Committee

As Sunland Springs Village continues to grow, it becomes nec-essary more than ever that we stay in touch with each other. Our growing SSV Resident Phone Directory is one of the primary ways we do this. Again this year, we are asking for your support as follows:1. If any of your personal information as printed in the 2012 direc-tory has changed – name(s), address(es), phone number(s) –, please come by the Office and complete a new “green” information sheet. We print a directory supplement often during the year which is free to residents. If you have made changes during the year, simply check the current supplement to make sure it reflects any changes

you have already given us. 2. This year, for the first time since the HOA Office began collecting resident information,

we are asking those residents whose information sheets are eight (8) or more years old, to complete a new “green” form. We have added a lot of information that the old forms did not contain, including emergency contact name(s) and number(s) and enhanced seasonal data. We have compiled a list of these residents. Any HOA Office Volunteer can tell you if you are on the list, and cheerfully give you a “green sheet” to complete.

As always, any information you tender to the HOA office is used internally only. You control the release of any of this data, including its appearance in the directory. Questions? Conntact Allen Schaeffer, 480-473-3175, or [email protected]

Security Begins At HomeEven When You’ve Just Moved In

By SSV Block Watch Captain Marcia NuenkeNew SSV residents Bob and Diana

Grubb didn’t even finish unpacking their moving boxes before hosting a neighbor-hood Block Watch Party. With the help of neighbors Julia and Gene Hoon, they hosted 40 of their new neighbors from 11400 and 11500 Navarro, 2700 Yellow Wood Circle and 2700 Copperwood for a combined Block Watch Potluck Dinner.

These four Block Watch groups, headed by their Captains Joe Fusaro, Jane Urbach, Judy Sigl and Marcia Nuenke, gather at least twice a year to satisfy the Mesa Police Department re-quirements to be an active Block Watch.

In the past they have had a chili-fest, a chili and dessert cook-off contest with prizes going to the best chef in each category, and a catered “all you can eat” pizza and salad buffet as well as numerous potluck lunches and dinners.

If you would like to have an active block and be a Captain for your block, contact Karen Stegenga, our Mesa Crime Prevention Officer, at [email protected], or you can call her at (480) 644-5014 any Monday through Thursday between the hours of 7:00 AM – 5:00 PM.

Village Landscape

By: Jerry Nelson, Chairman, Landscape Committee

To address traffic safety issues, special and regular trimming maintenance was done in the median on Springwood Blvd.

Your input on any landscaping issues in the Village is welcomed by this Committee. If something requires attention, please come to the Activities Office and complete a work order. It is important to note the location requiring attention.

Safety does require some responsibility by drivers, walkers, cyclists, etc.,

when making left and right turns and crossing through streets. It would seem pru-dent and lawful to slow down and proceed with caution.

There are vacancies for persons wishing to serve on the Landscape Committee. An application may be secured from the Activi-ties Office.

Everyone be safe out there.

Introducing beautiful, energy-efficient, cost-saving homes from the builder the East Valley has trusted since 1959. Just as a hat protects the body from the effects of heat and cold, the “Farnsworth Hat” protects your home from the effects of hot summer days and cold winter nights; thus reducing your energy bills compared to lesser built homes or older re-sale homes.

Presenting the

at Farnsworth’s Sunland Springs Village

House with a Hat Standard features in all

Homes, Townhomes and Golf Condos. • 14 SEER high efficiency heating and cooling system • Programmable thermostat • Automatic fresh air ventilation system • Radiant barrier protection on underside of attic plywood • Heat resistant windows with Low E reflective glass and Suncoat Max glass • Homes are randomly tested by an independent third party to ensure that energy efficiency standards are met: - “Blower Test” - ensures air-tight walls with minimal air leakage - “Duct Blaster” Test - duct testing that ensures HVAC system is tightly sealed for efficient air distribution • Roof Overhang gives shading to exterior walls and helps rain water fall away from the house• 100% CFL bulbs

The Leader in energy-efficiency. We are excited that we’ve partnered with SRP to establish a higher standard in Sunland Springs Village for affordable, energy-efficient housing. Our homes are built under a program called PowerWise, which uses whole-building design to develop high-performance homes at optimal costs. This approach brings together building design, energy conservation and today’s energy-efficient technologies to minimize a home’s operational costs and make the most of all its elements.

SportsSoftball News

By: Patti FinneyIt is hard to believe that we are fast approaching a new

year. Before we welcome in 2013, we will wrap up 2012 with a PANCAKE BREAKFAST on DECEMBER 8 in the auditorium. Tickets are $6 and can be purchased from the softball players or at the Activities Office.

Following the pancake breakfast, “try outs” will be held for new players who want to play on the men’s softball teams. If you are interested in playing, be at the field at noon on December 8 with your softball glove.

The men’s fall league concludes with a tournament on Thursday December 13 at SSV field. The tournament will consist of five games. The first game will begin at 8:30 AM. On Friday, December 14, and Saturday, December 15, a charity tournament will be held at SSV field with proceeds benefitting Sunshine Acres. Please come to both the tourna-ments and support our teams.

All the SSV Softball Teams are looking for players of all experience levels. If you are interested in playing softball on a SSV softball team call, Patti Finney, 480-861-4516, for the ladies team, and Dick Paulin, 480-986-7600, for the men’s teams.

Are you not able to play but want to be a part of the Club anyway? We need scoreboard operators. No experience re-quired, and training will be provided. Call Don Gunderson, 480-984-4987.

As we look ahead to 2013, we look toward our Pancake Breakfast on Saturday, January 12,, 2013, and our world famous Hamburger Feast on Wednesday, February 13. Mark your calendars now so you will not miss these events.

We look forward to seeing all of you at the PAN-CAKE BREAKFAST on Saturday, December 8.

Billards ClubBy: Jane Harrel, Secretary

That darn 8-ball. Why do we sink it at the wrong time??? Practice, Practice, Practice.

For all members out there, the Annual Meeting and election of officers will be held January 12, 2013, in the Auditorium at 5:00 PM. We will be having pizza and salad. Yum!

On January 10, we will hold the first mixed doubles tournament and lunch. Further details will be forthcoming. The second and final tournament will be March 9. Save those dates if you want to play.

All leagues are in progress now, but don’t know the stand-ings at press time. More next month. Remember: no open play during league play unless the team is playing away. The men have Monday and Wednesday, while the women play on Tuesday and Thursday.

If you are interested in learning the game of pool, come Thursday mornings at 9:00 AM for lessons. Friday at 1:00 PM a 9-ball tourney is held for a $1.00 entry fee. Friday nights at 6:00 PM is fun night for men and women. They play a “Chi-nese Fire Drill” type of game where you play with different people on different tables. It is worth the price of “admission” to watch 20 or so people try to find their table and remember the number of the person that will be their partner.

Meet Our Morning Yoga Instructors

By: Christine K. MarcusOn Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays here at SSV, we

have YOGA in the Auditorium. Sign in at 8:30 AM…classes from 8:45 – 10:00 AM. Bring a YOGA mat, towel or blanket and wear comfortable clothes to move in. YOGA is done barefoot.

Meet our morning instructors, Lu Ann Greenwood and Linda Sanger.

Lu Ann loves to teach YOGA philoso-phy and asanas (postures). She believes the combination brings physical health and spiritual peace by connecting the body and mind to the heart. Lu Ann has been practic-ing YOGA since 2006 and teaching classes for five years.

Linda believes that YOGA is some-thing anyone can do. She enjoys tailoring the practice to the student, and feels it is a privilege to share with others all that YOGA has taught her. She began practic-ing YOGA in the late 1990’s and has been teaching classes since2006.

All of these classes will stretch, tone and strengthen you from head to toe. Some additional benefits are improved health, decreased stress and improved balance. These YOGA instructors bring not only their experience and expertise, but also a variety of life experiences that makes each class personal and unique. Come join us!

SportsCouples 18 Hole Golf

LeagueBy: Iris and Del Huchulak

To all our November and December arrivals: Welcome back to the SSV Couples Golf Club. We are looking forward to more golf, more golf games, more socials, and of course, more fun! We are so very thankful to all the volunteers that make this club so successful.

Our November socials included a lasagna supper, a visit to Tia Rosa’s Mexican restaurant, a Sloppy Joe’s night, table hors d’oeuvres, and Fry’s fried chicken with a potluck of sides. Yum! Thank you to our member hosts who prepared and/or arranged these meals.

Our December 21 social will feature a potluck of appe-tizers and cookies. The variety and display of these culinary delights is quite amazing! Our Christmas party will take place on December 14.

If you are new to SSV, please feel welcome to join our club. You can contact our president couple, Sheila and Jerry Mason at 480-275-2089 or [email protected], to join or get more information.

We wish you and your families a festive holiday season and a very Merry Christmas.

Ladies 18 Hole Golf League

By: Barbara ShawOur numbers continue to grow! Every week shows more

ladies returning from their summer homes to enjoy another season of great golf and fellowship.

We held our first meeting of the season on November 5 at the San Tan Center with 46 ladies attending. Gloria Wood, Carlyn Block and Janine Mullinnex provided us with a great luncheon. Thanks ladies for a job well done!

A big Thank You goes to all the ladies who volunteer of their time and talents!

Our Winter Meeting will be held on January 7 at the San Tan Center at 11:00 AM. This meeting will be hosted by your board, who I am sure, will provide a spectacular brunch for your enjoyment.

A date has not been set as yet, but in February, the Ladies 18 Hole Golf League will be hosting a “Rally for the Cause” golf outing. This event will be held on one of our regular Tuesday golf days. More to come next month on this event!

Men’s Golf ClubBy Mike Schafer

There was a great turnout for the first event of the Fall/Winter season on Wednesday, November 7. We had 92 players who participated in our team scramble. The winning team, consisting of Dennis Boyd, David Marshall, Fred Dow, and Ron Thomas, had a score of 57. Tied for second were the teams of Lee Crook, Eldon Junkermeier, Rusty Riggs, and Jim Ermer and the team of Mark Lambert, Bill Bushelman, Ron Mayberry and Homer Oberst.

After the tournament, we had our annual Fall Meeting and Lunch in the auditorium with over a 100 members attending. Merrill Lynch was the event sponsor and provided door prizes and our lunch. Jeff Decker and course Superintendent Larry Farwell also attended. Mr. Decker discussed Farnsworth’s plans for the course and mentioned that eventually Farnsworth will consider selling the course, preferably to a group for SSV homeowners. Larry and Jeff then answered questions from the members regarding the course maintenance.

The events scheduled for the year were reviewed (a list is posted on the bulletin board) and Kent Bulkley led a discus-sion on rules and frequently asked questions. Mike Schafer discussed stewardship of the course by members and reminded the members that minutes and current financial statement will always be posted on the bulletin board. Handicaps are calcu-lated at the end of each month and posted first of each month.

Annual dues of $35 must be paid by December 31 or you will not be eligible for the spring tournament. See Andy Catalano, Treasurer, to pay.

The Men’s Club plays every Monday and Wednesday with a shotgun start at 8:00 AM. The first Wednesday of each month is a team game, and all others are low net by flights. Sign-up sheets for each week are posted on the bulletin board.

Connie Wilkins, whose wife Marianne died October 2 after a five-year fight with Alzheimer’s disease, has asked me to pass along his sincere thanks to all the members and residents of SSV who sent sympathy cards, or made phone calls and visits during his time of grief. They were extremely comforting and appreciated.

Holidaze Craft FairBy Barbara and Jerry Pointer

This years Holidaze Craft Fair, held November 10, was filled with a wonderful array of one of a kind handcrafted items. The fair was a great success and is now just a memory. What a great way to kick off this year’s holiday season.

We would first like to thank all the residents of Sunland Springs Village for their support, as well as the many crafters who obviously spent countless hours preparing and crafting their goods for the fair. A special thanks goes to the crew at the HOA office and the members of TAC that help move all the tables and chairs. This Craft Fair is the primary fundraiser for the Textile Arts Center (TAC) here at SSV, and without everyone pulling together and making that extra effort, this event would not be possible.

Plans for next years Holidaze Craft Fair is already underway. Ad-ditional information can be found in future Voice publications as well as on the bulletin boards found around the Village. If you have any questions or suggestions, please give us a call at 393-3814 or e-mail us at [email protected]. Again – Thanks.

Congratulations -- We Did ItBy: Dick Paulin

When we started collecting pull tabs for the Ronald McDonald House Charities in Sep-tember of 2007, our activities director, Janet West said we should collect a “ton of tabs.” At that time, we did not know how many tabs it took to make a ton and thought that was a good idea. We then received some information from the Ronald McDonald House Charities, and realized it was going to take quite an effort. A ton is 2,534,000 tabs. It takes 1,267 tabs to make a pound.

After the first year we had all of 359,194 tabs. We did not think we would ever get to our ton. The Ronald McDonald House helped us with some publicity in the Mesa Republic in 2009. I still receive calls from people from Sun Lakes to Sun City, wanting to know if we are still collecting tabs.

With help from everybody last year, we turned in 717,755 tabs. This year, with the help of Jim Jagim who brought in two five gallon buckets of tabs to Coffee Time on October 9, as of October 24, 2012, with everybody returning and bringing tabs back with them, we have now collected 226,793 tabs, which gives us a grand total of 2,553,636 tabs. YES! WE HAVE REACHED OUR “TON OF TABS.” While it is great to have reached our goal, we will still collect tabs.

Thank you and please continue to save your tabs. We will continue to collect tabs until there are no longer children in the hospital.

By: Ardella BurtmanA community Bible study is held every Friday morning at 9 AM

in the Superstition Room. Everyone is welcome to attend. This is an interdenominational study, open to men and women. We are careful to keep the class to one hour. Bring any translation of the Bible you prefer to use. There is no charge for the class and no book to buy – the Bible is our study guide with use of commentaries by trusted Christian writers.

The Bible study continues throughout the summer months. The only days during the year we do not meet are official holidays, such as the 4th of July, Christ-mas Day, etc.

The beginning of November we began a study of the Book of Hebrews. Marshall Poling is the teacher for this study. We do not adhere to a strict schedule with our classes, but proceed as time and comments permit. We anticipate the study of Hebrews will continue through to the end of January or early February.

You are invited to join us for our Friday Bible studies. Even if you have missed some classes or know you will miss some classes you are still welcome. Naturally, there is some building of content one class on the next, but also, in a sense, each class stands alone.

If you have any questions about the Bible study, please call Ardella Burtman at 480.993.3102.

Save Those Labels And Coupons, Please!

By: Donna StelterPlease save labels from Campbell Company soup and other products, and the Box Tops

Education coupons that are on cake, cookie and brownie mixes, crackers, General Mills cereals, Kleenex boxes and snacks, for the Brinton Elementary school. Place them in the container in the Activity Office, and I will deliver them to the school.

The students receive many useful items, such as clocks, art supplies and other things the school does not have in this economy. It is a worthwhile project. Thank you for helping.

“Tis The Season”Christmas Concert by the Village Voices

By Giovanna RichardsonDecember 18, 2012, is the date for you to attend the concert presented by the Village

Voices Chorus. The voices have been fine tuned after 16 bi-weekly practices under the direc-tion of Judy Herr and the accompaniment of Sylvia Hansen. The song selections are both old favorites and some new surprises. There will also be a guest artist to enhance your listening pleasure. Do you wonder whatever happened after the “12 Days of Christmas?” Well, we have the answer for you.

The tickets are only $1.00 and may be purchased in the Activities Office. The Village Voices would like to help those less fortunate during this holiday season, so please bring a non-perishable food item(s) with you to the Auditorium, all of which will be donated to Apache Junction Food Banks.

TV StarsBy: Jane E. Harrel, Editor Photos by Jim Becker

On Monday, November 5, 2012, Emma Watson of Channel 12 morning show, visited SSV Ball Park to interview Dick and Karen Paulin as the spearheads of the Ronald McDonald tab collecting drive. (Also interviewed were Larry Selear and Curly Long.) They related the history of the drive from its inception in 2007, and a ton of tabs was the goal. After counting, weighing and sorting over two million tabs, the goal was reached in October, 2012.

Their inspiration for this charity is their grandson who was diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome at a very young age. Janet West, Activities Director, also has a grandson who was born without kidneys. He recently received a kidney transplanted from his mother. Both mother and child are doing well and staying at the Ronald McDonald House near their California home.

When asked how long the collection of tabs will be done, Karen said, “When they put me in the ground, and I’m looking up at the grass.”

December 3 will be the meeting date at 7 PM in the Red Mountain Room. Our speaker will be

Byron Bailey and he will be speaking about the War of 1812. Most of us have one or more ancestors who fought in that war, and you will be able to get a lot of information from his record. I have heard Byron speak on this subject, and it was very informative. I was able to fill in several blanks with dates, names and places.

Plane ShavingsFrom the Woodshop

By: Pete CrocenziHi Snowbirds. We Sunbirds would like to welcome ya’ll

back. We hope you had a great summer as we did. We sure enjoyed those cool tropical breezes during the day and the star filled summer night sky. (Do you think I spent too much time in the sun?)

Even though the Woodshop was only open during the summertime from 9:00 AM to noon with no afternoon hours, the woodworkers that stayed here were busy. We did some projects for various clubs as well as their own personal proj-ects, like wood bowls, bud vases, wood plates and wooden rocking chairs for children. The residents also had some work for us.

The winter Woodshop hours have changed to 8:00 AM to noon and 1:00 to 4:00 PM. Please come see us during those hours with your questions or projects. Our guys will try to answer your questions and help in anyway they can.

See you all soon!

SSV Computer ClubBy: Jane E. Harrel, President

We met for the first time in the San Tan Center and it was a rousing success. We had a few bugs, specifically the sound system, and how many tables and chairs to set up. Be rest assured that we will get the kinks worked out and have enough seating for everyone.

We are having some great programs this month. December 5: Staples will show us the new gadgets and hot gifts.December 12: Bob Gostischa representing Avast Antivirus will speak on protecting yourself, your computer and your identity.December 19: Business meeting and other short subjects.December 26: Holiday Potluck.

If any resident is in need of converting your old VHS tapes to DVDs, contact John Sharp, (480)275-2516, to use the dubbing machine. He is also the monitor of the Club’s slide converter machine. Both of these machines are easy to operate and your copying will be done in a jiffy.

We have classes scheduled on Microsoft Office (Word) 2007, File Management 101, Photoshop Elements 8, 9, 10 and the new 11. You must be a member of the Club to enroll

in a class. All classes are $5 per session. We will also offer a class on Facebook, Excel, EBay, Androids, etc., so stay tuned for when these will be held. Go the SSVCC.com website and click on the Calendar

link. It will show you when the classes are scheduled. Also, click on the “Class De-scription” link to read the syllabus.

Have a very happy holiday season, and we will see you next year!

ClubsVagabond Club News

By: Judith and Wayne Konz Ten Vagabonds from Sunland Springs traveled to Viet Nam and Cambodia in October for a cruise on the Mekong River along with some adventures in both countries. We all agreed this was a very interesting and memorable trip. The people were all so kind, helpful and friendly and the lodging and arrangements were fantastic. We had happy times interacting with the people, sad times remembering the Killing Fields in Cambodia and Viet Nam War, and interesting times seeing how the people live in this part of the world.

We hope that you can join us as we travel to Los Angeles on March 30, 2013 to board the Sapphire Princess for a 7 night California Coastal Cruise. We will celebrate Easter on the ship. Space is limited and time is running out.

On April 27, 2013. we have a 13 day trip planned with Collette Vacations to Italy. Visit all of the sights of this fan-tastic country. Just a few seats are remaining.

Travel to Alaska on July 7, 2013, on a 13-night land tour and cruise on the Diamond Princess. Travel by train and motorcoach from Fairbanks to Denali to Mt. McKinley to Whittier before you board the cruise to Vancouver.

We have space on a 7-night Alaska cruise on the Star Princess roundtrip from Seattle on August 3, 2013. Contact us for details.

On April 1, 2014, we will sail to the magical islands of Hawaii, Tahiti and Samoa on the Golden Princess for 29 days! This cruise sails roundtrip from Los Angeles so we will take a motorcoach if we have 40 passengers.

Cruise the Baltic Sea on June 28, 2014 for 12 days on the beautiful Azamara Journey. This ship only holds 670 pas-sengers and will sell quickly. Included are all gratuities, an amazing evening shore excursion in St Petersburg, all spirits, beer and wine in the bars, all soft drinks and wine and beer with lunch and dinner. Texas Hold’em PokerBy: Harlan Steinle

Do you like to play Texas Hold’em poker? If so, here is an opportunity to sharpen your skills, meet some of your neighbors in SSV, and have a good time---maybe even win a little ‘coffee money’.

Each Wednesday men and women meet in the Summit Card room for play which begins at 6 PM sharp. Players arrive a little early so they can buy their $10 worth of poker chips and draw for which table and seat they will start evening play.

There is a $10 one-time buy in, no re-buys which gives you 100 units in playing chips. Small and large blinds double every 30 minutes from the initial one (1) unit for the small blind and two (2) units for the large blind. We will play from 6 PM until 8:45 PM, OR until only three players remain, whichever comes first.

First Place winner will receive 55% of the buy in total for the evening; second place receives 35%, and third place 10%.

Please WEAR YOUR NAME tag and come join us for some card playing fun.

If you are interested, just show up OR send an email to Harlan Steinle at [email protected] to be included in a weekly ‘reminder email’. Questions about play, call Harlan at 480.982.3567.

SSV Writers ClubBy: Nan Miller

The SSV Writers Club wishes all residents and their families a very Happy Holiday season and a healthy and prosperous New Year.

Since its formation November 10, 2011, the SSV Writers Club has grown to thirteen members. The group ranges from novice writers to those who have published books. Some en-joy composing nonfiction while others concentrate on fiction. Anyone who has an interest in writing or wants to improve their craft is always welcome. We continue to charge no fees or dues.

We decide each time on a brief exercise to compose between sessions. At the meetings, we share our words. Dis-tributing written copies is always an option. Short critiques are available.

Regular meetings occur the first and third Thursdays of each month in the Summit Card Room from 10 AM to noon. In December, our sessions are the December 6 and 200.

A SIG group started this summer and will continue this season that concentrates on extensive critiques. It is for those who are interested in getting more detailed feedback on their work from other writers. This session is held the second Thursday of each month in the Summit Card Room from 10 AM to noon. December’s date for this is the 13th.

Nan Miller, a professional travel writer, is coordinator this season. For questions or if you would like to attend our group, call her at (480) 984-1852. We hope to see you at a meeting.

Sunland Springs VillageHomeowners Association (Ssvhoa)

MeetingOctober 23, 2012

The meeting was called to order at 9:35 AM by Jeff Decker, Vice President of the Board of Directors and Farnsworth Homes. He explained that John Lippert, HOA Manager, was on vacation and would be returning November 1.Mr. Decker announced that Craig Ahlstrom, Jr., has been named Director of the Memory Care Center, and that Beth Stern has been hired to replace him as the curator of the SSVHOA website. Ms. Stern is a resident of Sunland Springs.Mr. Decker proceeded to review the Financial Summary for the period ended September 30, 2012, which had been distributed to the audience. The reserve fund maintains a balance of over $1,000,000, which means that the Association is 98% funded. With regard to Cox revenue sharing, Mr. Decker stated that the HOA has a contract with them to get basic cable at 60% of the going rate paid through the HOA fees. They also pay a percentage of any upgrades residents do, such as telephone, internet and additional channels. This agreement will continue to 2014. It may be renewable.Farnsworth and HOA representatives did a walk thru of the San Tan Center. There are quite a few things to fix, but it was turned over to the HOA to manage. He has heard many good comments about the pool and fitness center.Farnsworth has sold 90 homes this year, and they are well the way to 100 for the year. Only 54 closings were done in 2011. Mr. Decker estimates that it will be eight more years to build out the Village. The Memory Care Center, has acquired its first rental. There will be 48 in all. First residency will be in January, when an open house celebration for it and the new models by the Sales Office and the San Tan Center will be ready. The next phase will be for assisted living, which may begin construction sometime in 2013.A resident complained that the trees along Baseline needed to be trimmed. The overgrowth is causing pests to come into the yard. This will be reported to Mr. Lippert when he returns in November.Terry Nored, the maintenance man who had a stroke and heart problem earlier this year is doing fairly well. He is hurting financially. There being no further business to come before the Homeowners, the meeting adjourned at 10:04 AM.Respectfully submitted,Jane E. HarrelRecording Secretary

The world’s most technologically advanced hearing aid was born from a father’s promise to his hearing impaired daughter. With this promise, Sam Thomasson, an accomplished engineer, embarked on a remarkable journey that became Zounds Hearing. Witnessing first-hand Kate’s frustration with her traditional hearing aids - which affected her speech, and ability to hear in a noisy environment - Sam set out to create a hearing aid that would solve these problems. #1 HEARING AID COMPLAINT:

“I can’t hear in a noisy environment.” (95% dissatisfied with traditional aids).

#2 HEARING AID COMPLAINT: “I have to replace batteries all the time.”

#1: Zounds Solved It!! #2: Zounds Solved It!! #3: Zounds Solved It!!

Most hearing aids require the battery changed every 4-6 days. With Zounds you will never have to buy batteries again. Zounds designed a custom rechargeable battery that lasts all day. Simply drop the hearing aid in the charging station before bed and when you wake up it is all ready to go.

The problem with the hearing aid industry is that there are too many middlemen - each marking up the product. Zounds solved this by taking the product direct to the customer though company-owned stores and franchisees. No other manufacturer directly operates stores like Zounds.
