By: Nan Miller Ron Petersen,

president of the tennis club from April 2013-14, spends his win-ters at SSV and summers in Sav-age, Minnesota. His first Arizona season was 2005.

He and wife, Nancy, purchased a Golf Condo in 2007 and their current home in December, 2013.

Born and raised on a farm in Luck, Wisconsin, the YoYo capitol of the world, he received a B.S. from the University of Wisconsin in meat and animal sciences with a business minor. He briefly did public re-lations for the Milwaukee Stockyards, had a term with the National Guard, and then worked for Wilson Company (the meat pack-ers firm) from 1965 to 1996. His career with Wilson entailed seven moves to Oklahoma City and different cities throughout the Mid-west. He started in the provision department in Albert Lea, Minnesota, as liaison between sales and production and finished as the deli-catessen department manager at headquarters in Oklahoma City. In between for 13 years, he was plant manager at Jefferson, Wiscon-sin, and Clarinda, Iowa From 1996-2003,

he was manager at Patrick Cudahy, a meat processing plant in Cudahy, Wisconsin, a suburb of Milwaukee.

Ron plays tennis at the 3.0 level three times weekly and in his spare time, a little golf. He and Nancy, a former hairdresser before being a full time mom and doing vol-unteer work, enjoy playing various card and board games with friends, and going to some of the evening programs. They also enjoy traveling internationally as have taken five cruises, a river cruise between Amsterdam to Budapest, and trip to Italy.

The Petersens have been married 47 years and have two daughters. Their five grandchildren take up much of their time during their summers in Minnesota.

Ron says his greatest achievement is “the fact that I was born and raised on a farm, went to a one room grade school, yet completed a successful business career. Plus raising two great daughters resulting in an enjoyable extended family.”

By Nan Miller Known for his work in creating and

maintaining the ssvhoa.com website and the referral lists, Mark Wittick serves on the Com-munications Committee and repairs comput-ers for residents. Jennifer is a member of the Recreational Facilities Committee.

Born in Burks Falls, Ontario, and after obtaining his National Electricians license, Mark worked for Bell and Howell in Toronto, in 1980. In 1981, he moved to Calgary be-coming the company’s Western Canadian Manager, then transferred in 1985 to B&H’s Vancouver office for five years before retiring and became a full-time RVer for four years, spending seven months in Mexico. Settling in San Diego in 1990, he started his own electri-cal, heating and air conditioning company and AAA Service, which he owned until 2002. He also met his wife there in 1994 playing

beach volleyball. They married in 1995. In 2002, they re-retired and ended up at the Oasis Las Vegas RV Resort where he stayed on as Facilities Manager. They moved to Islander RV Resort in Lake Havasu in 2004 before reaching Mesa in 2006. He had a home sell-ing business at Viewpoint RV Resort for five years before moving to SSV in 2011. In his spare time, Mark enjoys playing the guitar, tennis, and golf.

Jennifer Wittick was born in Los Ange-les. She attended San Diego State University graduating with a Finance Degree and earned a Master’s degree in International Business. Jennifer worked for Jack in the Box as Senior Manager in the Planning and Analysis Depart-ment from 1990-2003.

She has won gold medals for her play, is captain of her Arizona Tennis Asso-ciation Team, and social coordinator for her SSV team. This past March Jennifer won the year-end women’s doubles championship at Sunland Village East.

Home SecurityAn ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure

By Ed Leahy, Chairman SSV Security Committee

According to Mesa Police estimates, 40 to 50% of thefts from a home can be prevented. Garage doors get left open. Cars are left unlocked in driveways sometimes with valuables on the front seat—even keys left in the ignition. Some homes do not have security doors making kicking in a door easier. Any of which can invite thieves to take advantage. In a nut-shell, effective home security is about preventing break-ins, which means taking the necessary steps to secure your home.

You could say deterring crime is a job for the Police, but the Police can’t sit in front of each and every one of our homes to protect them. At SSV we have organized a Mesa Police Neighborhood Watch. The concept is as simple as getting to know your neighbors, and you become part of an organized network of support that watches out for each other. When you are away, a neighbor can take a solicitor’s door hanger off your door, pick up telephone books left at your doorstep or, any other signal that you are not home. If you are a winter visitor you have bigger reason to belong to a neighborhood watch because you leave your home vacant for long stretches of time.

If there isn’t a neighborhood watch group in your neigh-borhood call Karen Stegenga, Mesa Police Crime Prevention Officer and find out how to join one. You can e-mail her [email protected] or,by telephone at 480 644 5014.

On The Managers Mind

Greetings SSV residents! I hope you are all managing to keep cool in this hot weather. Summer is definitely upon us! I want to thank you all for your patience and understanding during the renovation of the Springwood pool facility. It is a great addition to the newly resurfaced tennis courts, and shade covers at the bocce ball courts.

Just a reminder that pool and fitness center passes are available at the office for your family and guests. Guests 16 years of age and younger must be accompanied by your registered adult guest or by you.

While the Activity Office hours are from 9 AM to noon during the summer, the office staff, including me, are here from 8 AM to 5 PM. If we do not answer the phone, please leave a message as we do check them regularly. You can always send an e-mail, and we will respond as well.

For those of you that have upcoming projects on your homes, please remember that you must submit an architectural request form to the Architectural Committee for approval before work can commence. This includes landscaping, the addition of yard ornamentation, painting of any kind (fences, driveways, and homes), patios, and patio covers. The com-mittee meets twice per month, on the first and third Tuesdays. Please submit your requests with a thorough explanation and drawings for the committee to review. Omitting information can delay your request.

ActivitiesCommunity Bible Study

By: Ardella Burtman

A community Bible study is held every Friday morning at 9 AM in the Springs Card Room. The Bible study is open to anyone who wishes to attend and is not restricted solely to residents of Sunland Springs Village. This is an interdenominational study, open to men and women. There is no charge and no book to buy – the Bible is the study guide with use of commentaries by trusted Christian writers. Bring any translation of the Bible you prefer to use. The Bible studies continue throughout the summer months.

During the six week period from the middle of June through the end of July, Pas-tor Lanny Barringer will teach a study on the symbolism of the construction and articles of the Old Testament tabernacle

You are invited to join the Bible study group for its Friday Bible studies. Obviously, for various reasons, not everyone can attend every Friday, and even though there is some building of content one session on the next, in a sense, each session stands alone.

If you have any questions about the Bible study, please call Ardella Burtman at 480.993.3102.

New International Version (NIV)“8 Then have them make a sanctuary for

me, and I will dwell among them. 9 Make this tabernacle and all its furnishings exactly like the pattern I will show you.” Exodus 25:8-10 NIV

Saturday Bunko By Joe Fusaro

Our players in May were Ada and Warren Wright, Agnes O’Byrne, Barb and Glenn Buboltz, Dolores Rankin, Eth-el Grosse, Midge and George Perry, Lynda and

George White, Rose and Rodger Branvold, and Joe and Linda Fusaro at Saturday Bunko. We meet at 2:15 PM in the Majestic Card room on the second Saturday of every month, even in the summer.

Bunko is played with dice and is a very simple game to learn. We collect $3.00 to be distributed for the seven winning categories.

At the end of Bunko, we also play a game for $1.00 called “Left Center Right.” There are two winners in the game. We are usually finished by 4:30 PM.

For more information or for a copy of the playing rules for either game, contact me, Joe Fusaro, by email at [email protected] or call 480-951-3674.

Chapel TidingsBy Springs Chapel Board

Springs Chapel offers Sunland Springs Village residents a Christian community worship service each Sunday at 9:00 AM in the Auditorium, followed by a coffee and fellowship hour. Communion is offered the first Sunday of each month. This is a non-denominational, Bible-based ministry. Pastor Anthony Bryant and Pastor Lanny Barringer serve as its pastors. Residence in Sunland Springs Village is not a condition for atten-dance or membership – everyone is welcome to attend regardless of place of residence. Ser-vices continue throughout the summer months.

While not a full-fledged church, Springs Chapel does offer opportunities to participate in a mixed choir, men’s and women’s break-fasts, Christian women’s reading groups, and special social events sponsored by the Chapel. The choir does not practice and perform during the summer months, but will resume in the fall. Chapel men’s and women’s groups meet once a month on a Thursday morning. For further information on these groups contact Bud Dighton at 480-380-7733 (Men’s Group) or Julie Hoon at 509-679-8009 (Women’s Group). The Women’s Reading Groups meet once a month. Contact person for the read-ing groups is Sylvia Hansen (480-984-4347). Special events are coordinated by Tony and Donna Mills (480-946-7344).

“9 And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, 10 so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, 11 filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ—to the glory and praise of God.” Philippians 1:9-11 NIV

Ladies Luncheon

The July Ladies Luncheon will be held on Wednesday, July 16. We have selected the Cheesecake Factory Restaurant at 6613 E Southern (west of Power Road, north side of Superstition Mall). There will be separate checks, so you can order anything from the menu instead of just a few selected items.

Deadline to sign up for the luncheon and make your $5.00 deposit at the Activities Office is noon, Friday, July 11. If you are not familiar with the $5.00 deposit, it will be refunded to you when you check in to go to lunch. Check in will be in the Courtyard at 11 AM on July 16.

All lady Villagers are welcome. If you have questions, contact Carol Schaeffer, 480.473.3175, or Myra Davis, 480.986.4232.

Memorial Day

Straight From The Heart

Memorial Day Celebration was a great success with the multitude of desserts, and the entertaining choral music provided the East Mesa Lamplighters Barbershop Chorus and Quartet.

By, Dan RadekaWe are back again to collect items for

the Ronald McDonald House to be opened in Mesa.

We now have information that the house will be in operation by the end of this year, possibly as early as September this year.

The basket is back in the activity office. Please help to keep it filled with donations. Bring in anything that can be used to get the home started. If you are traveling, save the soaps, shampoo’s,and lotions that you find in your rooms. If you go shopping, maybe

you can pick up an extra bottle of soap or cleaner to donate. Paper products are also needed, bathroom tissue, Kleenex, paper towels, toothpaste, toothbrushes etc.

Please, STRAIGHT FROM THE HEART.

Your days and lives will be better know-ing that you have shared your donations with someone who really needs the help you will provide.

Karaoke Things To Do This

Summer!By: Doris Havelka

People often say there is nothing to do all summer when the Snow-birds leave. That is not entirely true. Yes, things do slow down and there are not as many things to do but even us rounder’s must admit, we also make other plans and sometimes go away and are not here for the functions.

The Karaoke Club will continue our “1st Friday of the month” parties on August 1, September 5 and October 3. No, you don’t have to sing to enjoy the evening. We are also adding two other functions: a Sock Hop on July 19 and an Octoberfest on September 27 with brats and music but bring your own beer! Tickets are available for the Sock Hop in the HOA office!

November 1 will be our Halloween Spooktacular dance with prizes for funniest, scariest and best costumes. It’s always fun to see the new ideas people come up with! Costumes are optional.

Please mark your calendars for these two new summer functions which Karaoke is sponsoring for your enjoyment. Any questions, call Doris 671-1392

YMT Vacations

SSV Computer ClubBy Pat Miller

Our summer sessions continue with great attendance. We begin each session with a short tutorial from Lynda.com. We have been focusing on Word 10 with some interesting new features of the product. We also covered Apple products the third Wednesday in June. After the short tutorial, we break out into individual/group help sessions. We offer help on a variety of topics, including Microsoft Word, email systems, Windows 7 & 8, and the entire line of Apple products.

Several people have expressed frustration on not receiving meeting notices. When you join the Computer Club you will be sent an email inviting you to join our SSVCChelp forum (please note this is not the same thing as the SSV Forum). You must reply to this message in order to be added to the forum. If you still do not receive messages, it usually is because the messages are going to Junk mail due to settings in your email system. If you add the address [email protected] to your contact list, this should fix the problem.

We hope to see on the first and third Wednesdays for the rest of the summer. During the summer season we meet at 10:00 AM in the Superstition Room. We do not collect dues in the summer and everyone is welcome. Our regular meetings in the San Tan facility will commence the first week of October.

Stay safe during the summer holidays.

PickleballBy Karen Copeland

Pickleball, the sweet sport

with the sour name, is spreading like wildfire across the country. A big factor in the rapid popularity of the sport is the fact that so many “snowbirds” learn the game where

they spend the winter, and then take their love and enthusiasm for it back home to share with their friends. Pickleball is contagious and addictive. It is popping up in senior centers, YMCAs, health clubs, physical education pro-grams, and parks and recreation departments all over the country.

As the snowbirds leave Arizona for the summer and the days become hotter, things slow down on the Pickleball courts. Some of our year-round residents still play Pickleball in the mornings and are happy to have you join them on the courts. Feel free to call Mitch Johnson for information about playing times and taking lessons. He can be reached at 602 740-2446. Also, for photos of past events, announcements of upcoming events, court reservations, and much more, visit our web page at www.ssvhoa.com/pickle-ball.html

Tip of the Month: Getting to the Net - If you are the team at the back of your court and the other team is at the net, you are at a disadvantage. You want to get to the net. From the back court hit the ball softly and just over the net so it will bounce in your opponent’s non-volley zone. This will give you time to rush the net and have the same court position advantage as your opponents. This shot takes practice to perfect because if you hit it too high, they will smash it. If you hit it too hard, you will not have time to make it to the net. This is one of the toughest shots in Pickleball.
