Creating 30 Seconds of Change Around the World,

Launching a Movement to Engage youth and Amplify Voices

What is30 Seconds of Change ?

30 Seconds of a Change is ayouth inspired movement toamplify the voices of youththrough social media.

Inuenced by the work of NicholasKristof, discussions in theLeadership Development Forumand peers at the United WorldCollege of Southern Africa, SoaGomez-Doyle, Harvey Kadyanji andTatenda Mashanda developed 30Seconds of Change , a socialmedia website to encourageconversation and create a globaldialogue about inequality.

This initiative highlights emergingideas and local experiments forchange. It is a movement tochampion transformative, innovative and emerging ideasthrough social media and lm .

    By establishing a space where

young people can share, articulate, convey and connect their ideas,30 Seconds of Change will serveas a platform to amplify voices andengage in discussion. Powerfulideas serve as the impetus forchange. As a catalyst for youthempowerment, 30 Seconds seeksto amplify innovative ideas fromMalindza to Chicago.

We rmly believe that changebegins with engaging in a dialogueand exchanging ideas acrosscultural, ethnic and political divides.Change initiates with aconversation.

    The underlying premise of 30

Seconds of Change is that allideas can be valuable - you do nothave to be professional, employedor an adult - all we need isindividuals with a spark. 30Seconds of Change aims tosynthesize these ideas to engagestudents in a dialogue, empowerthem with a sense of condenceand encouragement, and teachthem to identity social injustices

    and then rectify them.

    empower. .

    create. change. amplify.

    Creating Conversations

Creating Conversations is the second of three projectslaunched by 30 Seconds of Change. Through CreatingConversations, our team aims to demonstrate theimportance of engaging in a dialogue and discussing the

challenging issues that a community face.

In November 2012, the 30 Seconds of Change team metwith Ryan and Adelyn Hall, two Peace Corps Volunteerswho work at Malindza Refugee Camp in Swaziland.Through the program, Creating Conversations 30Seconds of Change members at the United WorldCollege of Southern Africa will develop workshops andorganize workshops with the refugees which focus themost pressing needs of the camp.

In early December, Adelyn and Ryan met with 50residents at Malindza, and collectively outlined tencapacity building projects. Several of these projectsinclude sanitation/hygiene, permaculture training, sports

teams and how to deal with mourning.

The discussions between students in 30 Seconds andthe refugees at Malindza continue to emphasize theimportance of conversations - conversations whichcompel us to think, and re-think how to drive change.

Amongst the twenty or so refugees we spoke with, allwere engaged in changing the conversation and activelyparticipating in 30 Seconds of Change in order to raiseawareness and improve their situation.

Although Soa Gomez-Doyle will begin her universities in

2013 and will no longer attend the United World Collegeof Southern Africa, Tatenda Mashanda, Harvey K andShadrack Chemane will create a 30 Seconds club toengage students in the UWCSA community. Currently, there are three workshops scheduled at MalindzaRefugee Camp in February 2013.

    Youth Connections

Finally, 30 Seconds of Change is in discussion with

Jasmine Baldi, a Syrian organization that works withrefugee children. We are attempting to connect withyouth whose schools have been destroyed and whoseeducation has been severely disrupted. In the comingmonths, we are hoping to establish links between Syria,Swaziland, Chicago, Zimbabwe and Tanzania in order toprovide support, create opportunities, and trigger ayouth inspired movement.
