A Christmas Prayer for Those Who Grieve God of compassion, there is such a hole in my heart! Today should be a day of joy, but I feel only empti-ness and loss. While the world cele-brates around me, I remember Christmas celebrations of the past and I long to have my loved one with me. I bring my sorrows to You, Lord, like some odd gift of the magi, and dump them at Your feet. In my blind tears I wonder if anyone can possibly understand the depth of my sadness. I know, You can. You sent Your son to be with us in our deepest sorrows and I know that even though I might not feel it now, You are here with me, grieving with me, caring for me in my sadness. Dea-rest Lord, help me to turn to the one I miss so much today and speak. Help me heal the loss of our parting and help me not to regret the things I didn't say. Sorrow tears at my heart, but today I ask that my loss softens my heart and makes me more compassionate with everyone I meet, so that my loss may become a gift to others

Saint Mark School News Happy Fourth Sunday of Advent. Our time of preparation has flown bye as

we become magnets of light as shown by Christ our Savior. Sincere thanks to the many family members who celebrated our Annual Christ-mas Program with us last Tues-day. To fill the church was most amazing. Voices were beautiful and music was heart filling with peace and a smile. Thank you to Miss Le-danski and the school staff for the dedication and work that brought

that event to fruition. Thank you as well to our Home and School Associa-tion for providing wonderful hospi-tality after the program. "It's a most wonderful time of the year"

Thank you to all the dona-tions sent for our school Mit-ten Tree. Out Student Coun-cil counted their collection of over 150 items consisting of gloves, mittens, scarves, etc. that was added to our parish collection for the needy of our parish. Many, many thanks and wishes of bless-ings to you. A Most sacred

Christmas time and Holy New Year to Everyone.

Parish Evangelization “There are no strangers here… only friends we haven’t met.”

In this final week of Advent, several important events will happen. One of them is that you have probably become aware of the days getting shorter and the dark nights getting longer as they consume the light of day. In the Roman days, this was a time to name one’s fears and enemies, one’s disappointments and failures. It seemed that all was lost: the gods of evil and darkness were going to conquer the world. Then after Dec. 21 – the shortest day of the year - on Dec 22, the 23rd, and on Dec. 24 hope would begin to be restored as the light of day began arriving a little bit earlier and departing a little bit later each evening. This meant that the God of Goodness and Light was victorious over the battle of darkness. Also, as the days would become bigger and bigger, people would begin to no-tice that we live in a world in which bigger and better would begin to define our expec-tations for much of life. Today, we have become so enamored by super size, super stars, and high definition that we tend to view life through a lens that so magnifies what we expect out of the world that we often do not see potential in small things. The prophet Zechariah reminds us (Zech 4:10) that we should not “despise the day of small things,” because God does some of his best work with small beginnings and im-possible situations. As Christmas draws nigh at the end of this week, you can be a “gentle evan-gelizer” by focusing on some of the small things, such as: + considering ways in which you can share either time or material good with those less fortunate. + Take some time each day to slow down for a while in order to spend some time in prayer. + Com-fort someone who might be experiencing anxiety or depression by spending some time with them. + Call someone on the phone that you have not spoken with in over six months, and let them know that they will be in your prayers at Christmas Mass.

Are you a morning dove? If you're blessed with good wake up genes, con-sider helping your spouse ease into the day by bringing coffee or juice, or some other morning ritual like playing gentle music.

What color are your daydreams? Did you know that daydreaming is good for your health? No

really, it is, psychiatrists tell us that specifically, daydreaming helps

you:

Relax. Like meditation, daydreaming allows your mind to take a

break, a mini-vacation in which to release tension and anxiety and

"return" refreshed.

Manage conflict. (a personal favorite!) The same kind of

organized daydreaming -- or visualization -- used to curb anxiety is

also useful for personal conflicts. For example you can go over in

your mind an argument you had with someone and imagine

responding differently than you did. Try this a few times,

responding differently each time, and you'll begin to figure out

better ways of dealing with the person in the future. Maintain

relationships. Absence makes the heart grow fonder, especially

among daydreamers. We can daydream about the people we love.

We can imagine sharing good news with them, along with our

successes and failures. Boost productivity. Daydreaming can help

us to be more productive in the long run. When we have too much

to do, sitting on the couch and taking 15 minutes of daydream time

and not thinking about things I had to do can help. Boost creativity

and achieve goals. The beauty of daydreams is that nothing is

impossible. When we daydream, we aim higher, we are writers,

opera singers, we can scale Everest, scaling it down a little, we can

end up working harder to make our dreams become realities.

Relieve boredom. People with monotonous jobs, like factory

workers and security guards, often use daydreaming to keep their

minds stimulated and to get them through the day.

So why am I daydreaming on the 3rd Sunday of Advent? No

particular reason, I was just daydreaming!! And in fact, then, it

dawned on me that Advent is a season for dreams. Often times in

our world we are encouraged to dream about what will be and what

we are going to do with our lives. Dreams are always future tense

and worse are often elusive and out of reach. We dream of what we

can never be. In the encounter of Mary and Elizabeth in our Gospel

we find two women dreaming of who they are and what will be of

their children. They see the world new, alive, full of life and God

because they carry life within them. They dream of who is God now

and their dreams are full of color and life, they dream of a God who

can change things and make things new, they dream of a God who

brings life where life may seem lost.

So in the middle of this crazy week take some 15 minutes a day

to daydream and dream in color! Dream of your relationships and

mend them, dream of your children and bless them, dream of your

neighborhood and fix the houses in them. Dream of a child, who

holds hope in his eyes and the power to love on his lips and

remember your hope is alive when you dream.

ayuda a:

productivos a largo plazo.

Sueña a tus relaciones y

repáralas, sueña a tus niños y bendícelos, sueña a tu vecindario y

Catholics Come Home Many parishes in the Archdiocese of Chicago have tried to find effective ways to reach out to “inactive” Catholics. This year there is an evangelization effort that will support those efforts through a media campaign called “Catholics Come Home.” The dioceses of Joliet and Rockford have joined together in this evangelization effort and have funded commercials. The centerpiece of this evangelization effort is a commercial entitled “Epic” that has been translated into three languages: English, Spanish, and Polish. Be on the lookout for this commercial, or you can also view it at www.CatholicsComeHomeChicago.org St. Mark’s will soon be offering our very own version of “Catholics Returning Home” in the New Year. You can read more about this program in our January parish bulle-tins. In the interim, why not invite someone to come back home to one of our parish masses on Christmas? What a wonderful way to practice the virtue of joy this Christ-mas season! In today’s gospel, John the Baptist “exhorted people in many other ways.” This week, as a “gentle evangelizer”, become like John and resolve to help your brothers and sisters see the salvation of God by making the rough ways straight: + Smile at ten strangers each day. + Hold doors open while others go through them. + Listen attentively while others speak. + Be a “voice of one” speaking a word of kindness during a moment of tension or frustration.

Reminder:

In observance of Christmas, the Parish

Office will be closed this Thurs. and Fri.,

Dear Parishioners: On Wednesday, December 16th, the Kenosha News published an article that im-plied that a rally in support of a pending immigration bill would take place at St. Mark Parish. No such rally took place at St. Mark. Pursuant to its own policies, and the rules and regulations of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, which comply with the Internal Revenue Code, St. Mark cannot take posi-tions in favor of any particular candidate for political office, nor can it engage in sub-stantial activities in support of, or in opposition to any particular legislation. Any non-profit organization that engages in such activities risks a loss of its tax exemption, no matter how important the issue. (See Haswell v. U.S., 500 F.2d 1133, 1138 (Ct. Cl. 1974), cert. denied, 419 U.S. 1107 (1975)). St. Mark’s primary purpose is to promulgate the teachings of the Catholic Church. In so doing, it will pray for social justice and the humane treatment of all mankind; including the unborn child, those in military service, and immigrants. It will never host rallies or other related events aimed at attempting to influence legislation. I hope you understand and we are sorry for any misunderstands this may have caused.

J. Michael McTernan, Esq. Chairman, St. Mark Parish Council,

On Behalf of Fr.
