♦ ABOUT STEPHEN SONDHEIM *
Stephen Sondheim (music and lyrics) began his Broadway careeras a lyricist. Heprovided words for Leonard Bernstein's music inWestSideStory, and for Jule Styne'sGypsy. Sondheim kept up his residency on Broadway. Along the way, he hascollectedmostofthe awards thatthe theaterhas to offer, including, through 1989, fourTonys and, shared with James Lapine, the Pulitzer Prize.
Sondheim knew that he wanted to grow up to write Broadway musicals when hewas a talented pianist of 10. His family's neighbor, at their summer home in Buck'sCounty, Pennsylvania, was Oscar HammersteinII, the lyricist-halfofthe writingteamofOklahoma, SouthPacific and TheKing and I. Sondheim and Hammerstein's sonbecame friends; Stephen absorbed shop-talk, advice and techniques from a greatmentor, the elder Hammerstein.
His first Broadway score was for A FunnyThingHappened on the Way to theForum. Later came the Tonys for Compaq, Follies, A Little Night Music and Intothe Woods. Passion is his 15th musical, opening in 1994 on Broadway.
Director/Choreographer Helena Binder Bress acknowledges, with deepestappreciation, the hard work and dedication of the cast and crew of A LittleNightMusic. She dedicates the entire production to the memory of her parents,Donald and Lily Binder.
