OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE
3rd SUNDAY OF ADVENT
"The blind regain their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised." Jesus has quite a résumé. When asked whether or not he is the long awaited Messiah, Jesus replies with this list of his credentials as proof of his position. These signs and wonders speak volumes, to be sure. But perhaps the most interesting line on the list
is his concluding one, "the poor have the good news proclaimed to them." Why does he count this among his litany of miracles? What is so remarkable about sharing good news?
Perhaps Jesus included this element of his work--the preaching of good news--to remind his followers that the physical healings were not the ultimate goal of his mission. Rather, the spiritual healing that comes from hearing
the good news of salvation is what Jesus was really about. The "poor"--which in a sense means all of us sinners, trapped by the poverty of the sins that enslave us--are freed by Jesus' message of a loving God who wants to bring us into his kingdom. Our poverty is erased by his richness. His mercy "undoes" our sin and we are invited to become the children of God who share in the glories of his heavenly abode.
Sometimes it's tempting to just want the visible miracles. But the invisible ones--the conversions that take place
in the silence of the human heart--are truly the more important works of God. Such interior transformation is what leads us to eternal life; even a physical cure won't last for eternity--death still comes at some point. But the really good news is that this miracle of conversion is available to all of us. And this season of Advent is the perfect time to let God work his miracles in our hearts.
On December 9, 1531, Our Lady appeared to a simple Aztec Indian who had converted to the Catholic faith, Juan Diego.
Three days later, at Juan Diego's request, Mary provided a sign so the local bishop would believe that she actually had appeared. Roses grew out of the cold winter soil, and when Juan Diego opened his cloak to show the bishop what he had found, an image of Our Lady appeared on the fabric. These occurrences led to the conversion of most of Mexico and remain today a strong sign of Our Lady's concern and love for us. Church-approved Marian
apparitions always point to her Son, Jesus. For many of us with a strong Marian devotion, Mary is a pathway into a stronger relationship with our Lord. Her generosity shown to Juan Diego is the same generosity shown to each of us that choose to ask her intercession. Families pray for one another and she is a very prominent member of our family. May the miracle of Our Lady of Guadalupe be a sign of warmth for you in the cold of winter and of Advent hope for a Christ Child that has redeemed the world.

LIGHTHOUSE TALKS CD OF THE WEEK
CONFESSION BY FR. LARRY RICHARDS
Based upon his proven and powerful parish mission presentation,
Fr. Larry Richards’ talk on Confession has become the #1 talk in
North America dealing with the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
He is riveting, honest, humorous, very human, and often touchingly
gentle. Fr. Larry provides listeners with hope for a closer, healing
relationship with Jesus Christ.
VOCATIONS CORNER
WITH FR. ROMKE People or Things?
As Christmas approaches
I tend to get caught up in
thinking of people in light of what gifts
I’m going to get them. Once I have
the perfect gift picked out, bought,
and wrapped, when I think about that
particular individual that gift will come
to mind. This is an unfortunate thing
however, because when it’s all said
and done, what matters more and
what I should be focused on isn’t the
gift itself but the relationship that I have
with this person that impels me to desire
to get them a gift in the first place!
All of us are called each day to Imitate
Christ as closely as possible. So why
shouldn’t we try to emulate how He
gave gifts at Christmas? He gave one
thing, and it wasn’t anything material
at all. He of course gave Himself,
coming down and entering our world
for the sake of establishing loving
relationships. Each of us when we
entered into this world were given
a calling and a mission from God.
Sometimes we can miss the importance
of this or even misinterpret what we are
called to do because when we look
at others we think of them in terms of
how they impact us materialistically,
what they bring to the table and what
we’re expected to bring to the table
for them. But what will enable us to
give them what they need most is if
we follow Christ’s example of being
who we are called to be for them.
So focus on love, focus on your mission
and your vocation, and be grateful for
the relationships that you have as you
do your shopping this year.
