Third Week of Advent - Gaudete Sunday

Year of St. Joseph 2021

On 8th December, Pope Francis has officially launched the "Year St. Joseph" to mark

the 150th anniversary of Jesus' foster father being named patron of the Universal

Church. "After Mary, the Mother of God, no saint is mentioned more frequently in the

papal magisterium than Joseph, her spouse," the pope writes in a new apostolic letter

published on December 8th to inaugurate the jubilee. The text is titled ‘Patris Corde’,

"with a father's heart". While December 8th is most often associated with the Feast of

the Immaculate Conception, it is also the date in 1895 that Pius IX named St. Joseph

patron of the Universal Church.

"Today, in our world where psychological, verbal and physical violence toward

women is so evident, Joseph appears as the figure of a respectful and sensitive man,"

he wrote. Pope Francis also highlighted St. Joseph’s creative courage, not only in

finding a stable and making it a welcoming home for the son of God who came into

the world, but also in protecting Christ from the threat posed by King Herod. St.

Joseph’s unconditional acceptance of Mary and his decision to protect her good name,

her dignity and her life serves as an example for men today, the pope said.

Dawn Masses – Simbang Gabi

Simbang Gabi is a Filipino Christmas tradition. It is a series of nine dawn masses on

the days leading up to Christmas. It begins on December 16 and ends on the 24th of

December. How Did Simbang Gabi Begin? This tradition was introduced by the

Spanish friars to allow the farmers to hear mass before going to the fields early in the

morning. Simbang Gabi is also known by its popular Spanish name, ‘Misa de Gallo’,

or ‘Mass of the Rooster.'

This year, we are happy to have 9 Priests from the diocese to celebrate Dawn Masses

in our church starting from 16th December. The dawn Mass starts at 5.00 am followed

by a breakfast in the parish centre. We cordially invite you all for the said special

celebration and get the blessing from Infant Jesus. We hereby give the names of our

visiting priests. Fr. Vince (16th), Fr. Jess (17th), Fr. Marcelo (18th), Fr. Concord

Our Parish is going to have the gift of 10 new Women Altar Ministers and 4 new male acolytes who are to be installed during the coming weekend Masses. Fr. Christian Service-Learning programme.

A reading from the holy Gospel according to John 1:6–8, 19–28 A man came, sent by God. His name was John. He came as a witness, as a witness to speak for the light, so that everyone might believe through him. He was not the light, only a witness to speak for the light. This is how John appeared as a witness. When the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, 'Who are you?' he not only declared, but he declared quite openly, 'I am not the Christ.' 'Well then,' they asked 'are you Elijah?' 'I am not' he said. 'Are you the Prophet?' He answered, 'No.' So they said to him, 'Who are you? We must take back an answer to those who sent us. What have you to say about yourself?' So John said, 'I am, as Isaiah prophesied: a voice that cries in the wilderness: Make a straight way for the Lord.' Now these men had been sent by the Pharisees, and they put this further question to him, 'Why are you baptising if you are not the Christ, and not Elijah, and not the prophet?' John replied, 'I baptise with water; but there stands among you unknown to you the one who is coming after me; and I am not fit to undo his sandal-strap.' Ministries Report and Discussion Presentations received from the following Ministries ALPHA, Grief Support, Legion of Mary, Liturgy, Information Communication Technology (ICT) Some issues were raised during our discussions and it was agreed that the Ministries and PPC would work closer together in 2021. PCY End of Year Update 2020

Peel Catholic Youth (PCY) started back up again this year, energised and ready to serve the young people of the Mandurah, Pinjarra, Waroona and Dawesville parishes. Our first youth gathering was on 11 October on the theme of ‘Uncertainty and Connection’. Our next three youth gatherings on 25th October, 8th November and 22nd November focused on different prayer experiences, with the themes of ‘What is Prayer?’, ‘Praise and Worship’ and ‘Ways of Worship’. We are so grateful to all the young people who have enthusiastically and fully participated in our youth gatherings so far! They have been full of enlightening discussions on each young person’s faith journey, experiences and personal relationship with God, as well as delicious food, wonderful friends and marvellous games. We had a fantastic Christmas-themed youth gathering on 6 December, which is also our last one for 2020 as we will be taking a break over the December-January period. We will be back with the first youth gathering on 7 February 2021, so mark your calendars! We are looking forward to a spectacular 2021, where young people will continue to grow in their faith and their relationship with God, while making friends and memories along the way. We call on all the young people between the ages of 12 and 25 to come join us next year for our future youth gatherings, and we look forward to seeing you there!

Preparing to hear God’s word

The gospel story In today’s gospel, the people ask John the Baptist who he really is, and why he is baptising people. John says he is not the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet. John tells the people that he is preaching and baptising in order to prepare for someone else who is coming after him. The person John is talking about must be very special, because John doesn’t even feel worthy to untie that person’s sandals. We know that the person John was taking about was Jesus.

Reflecting on the gospel John helped the people to recognise Jesus in their midst. What are some of the signs of Jesus’ presence that you have experienced in your life? What do these signs tell us about God and God’s love for us?

Commentaries The entrance antiphon for the third Sunday of Advent remains true to tradition. It’s from Paul’s letter to the Philippians (4:4-5). Its first word is “Rejoice” or in Latin “Gaudete” – hence the common title for this day, “Gaudete Sunday.” Whatever the history of this term, today’s readings (apart from the gospel) are filled with an infectious spirit of joy. At this mid-point of the season our hopes and expectations are intensifying. The feast of Christmas will soon be here. Today’s celebration gives us the opportunity to look beyond the hectic demands that December makes of us. It invites us to find a deeper well-spring of joy than that offered by all our end-of-the-year activities. This joy is truly the gift of God

St. John of the Cross- December 14 John de Yepes was born during 1542 in Fontiveros near the Spanish city of Avila. His father Gonzalo died at a relatively young age, and his mother Catalina struggled to provide for the family. John found academic success from his early years, but failed in his effort to learn a trade as an apprentice. Instead, he spent several years working in a hospital for the poor, and continuing his studies at a Jesuit college in the town of Medina del Campo. After discerning a calling to monastic life, John entered the Carmelite Order in 1563. He had been practicing severe physical asceticism even before joining the Carmelites, and got permission to live according to their original rule of life – which stressed solitude, silence, poverty, work, and contemplative prayer. John received ordination as a priest in 1567 after studying in Salamanca, but considered transferring to the more austere Carthusian order rather than remaining with the Carmelites.

Before he could take such a step, however, he met the Carmelite nun later canonized as Saint Teresa of Avila. Born in 1515, Teresa had joined the order in 1535, regarding consecrated religious life as the most secure road to salvation. Since that time, she had made remarkable spiritual progress, and during the 1560s she began a movement to return the Carmelites to the strict observance of their original way of life. She convinced John not to leave the order, but to work for its reform. Changing his religious name from “John of

St. Matthias” to “John of the Cross,” the priest began this work in November of 1568, accompanied by two other men of the order with whom he shared a small and austere house. For a time, John was in charge of the new recruits to the “Discalced Carmelites” – the name adopted by the reformed group, since they wore sandals rather than ordinary shoes as sign of poverty. He also spent five years as the confessor at a monastery in Avila led by St. Teresa.

Their reforming movement grew quickly, but also met with severe opposition that jeopardized its future during the 1570s. Early in December of 1577, during a dispute over John's assignment within the order, opponents seized and imprisoned him in a tiny cell. His ordeal lasted nine months and included regular public floggings along with other harsh punishments. Yet it was during this very period that he composed the poetry that would serve as the basis for his spiritual writings. John managed to escape from prison in August of 1578, after which he resumed the work of founding and directing Discalced Carmelite communities. Over the course of a decade, he set out his spiritual teachings in works such as “The Ascent of Mount Carmel,” “The Spiritual Canticle” and “The Living Flame of Love” as well as “The Dark Night of the Soul.” But intrigue within the order eventually cost him his leadership position, and his last years were marked by illness along with further mistreatment.

St. John of the Cross died in the early hours of Dec. 14, 1591, nine years after St. Teresa of Avila's death in October 1582. He was beatified in 1675, canonized in 1726, and named a Doctor of the Church in the 20th century by Pope Pius XI.
