Days after Lance Armstrong resigned aschairman of the board, officials of thefoundation that bears his name filed pa-perwork to officially change its name. The
Lance Armstrong Foundation received approval Oct. 30from the Texas Secretary of State’s office to change itsname to the Livestrong Foundation.
“Given the prominence of our brand, we were ableto be known as Livestrong without having to make thatofficial. During this time of change, we felt it appropri-ate to make it official,” Katherine McLane, a spokes-woman for the foundation, said in a telephoneinterview. The name change was filed and approved on
October 30.The Austin, Texas-based charity officially has been
known as the Lance Armstrong Foundation since it wasfounded in 1997 by the world-famous, now-disgracedcyclist. After “Livestrong” bracelets became a globalphenomenon in 2004, however, the organization morecommonly was referred to as Livestrong despite thelack of any official rebranding campaign. “It would havebeen silly of us to try to correct an organically phenom-enal thing. We went with it,” said McLane.
Asked why Armstrong’s resignations and the namechange were not announced all at once, rather thanseemingly week to week, McLane said: “Many nonprof-

Announcements about Armstrong’s replacement on theboard, as well as other potential additions to the board, areexpected after its December meeting, McLane said.
The United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) hasstripped Armstrong of all his records, including sevenTour de France titles, after it released a scathing reportin August that includes testimony from former team-mates about widespread doping. Armstrong has contin-ually denied the accusations, claiming he’s never testedpositive for performance-enhancing drugs. NPT
