Health & Careers Education
(HACE) 8 & 9:
Many parents are curious about what HACE isand how marks are collected and recorded. Hope
the following crash course in HACE helps:
What is HACE?Health & Career Education 8 & 9 is a mandatory
course that is implemented into existing schoolcourses. In other words, students in Grades 8 & 9are meeting the prescribe learning outcomes(PLOs) for HACE by completing coursework intheir other classes, such as Math, Science, Eng-lish, Social Studies, IE, PE, French, and InfoTech.
How are marks collected?Teachers give and mark assignments that fitnaturally into their existing courses, and in asense, that meet the PLOs for both their courseand for HACE. These marks are passed along tothe teacher who records and enters them into thecourse HACE 8 or 9, and the culmination of allthe marks collected then becomes the grade thatappears on students report cards.
When are Gr. 8 & 9 HACE students finishedthe course?
Students are enrolled in HACE all year long. Be-cause students in a semester system are takingdifferent courses at different times, the markscontinue to be added as assignments are givenby teachers in the previously mentioned courses. Therefore, students marks will continue tochange as they continue to learn material in theirbasic courses. Students final mark in HACE 8 or9 will appear on the final report card for the 2008-09 school year.
On the Term 1 report card, all students currently
enrolled in Grades 8 & 9 received a grade forHACE. This grade is a reflection of the studentslearning to this point only. Please keep in mindthat student learning is ongoing, and the gradewill change as new material is completed andadded to the existing marks.
