Dear Poulsbo Middle School Families, Teacher and Nurse Appreciation Week During the week of May 6-10, we will be recognizing teachers, nurses, and other certificated employees for their contributions to the education and development of our students. You can make this a very special week by sending a note or email to teachers, counselors, librarians, and nurses who have made a difference in your child’s life. Online Check-in We have begun Online Check-in. This is a great time to let us know if you plan to return for the 2018- 2019 school year. You will also be able to sign both district and school specific documents for the upcoming year. Please take time to log on to Skyward and complete the Online Check-in as soon as possible. If you have any difficulties, feel free to call the school for support. State Testing Each spring Washington public school students are tested. Two weeks ago we began assessing our student on the Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBA) in the area of reading. In the next week or so we will begin assessing students in math and science. We pay close attention to the results of state testing and should have our results in June. This information helps us improve the way we teach to better meet students’ learning needs. This is also an opportunity for students to see how much they have grown from the previous year. Please help your child be prepared for testing by making sure he or she is getting a good night’s sleep, eating a healthy breakfast, and arriving to school on time. Also, we have asked students to bring earphones to use that they are comfortable with during the assessment (mini-jack type – Bluetooth won’t work). Online Check-In is open for the ‘19 - ‘20 school year. Students need to be “Checked-In”, which will confirm our students’ continued enrollment for the new school year. The purpose of the Online Check-In process is to verify that your child will be attending Pouls-bo MS in September, to verify and update student demographic information, and to complete online forms, such as Acceptable Use Policy, required for computer/internet use, and approve or disapprove release of directory information, which includes your child’s photo. This process will reduce the amount of forms sent home at the beginning of the school year. All students who have complet-ed the Online Check-In process will be given their class schedule at Panther Preview in August. If you have more than one child attending Poulsbo Middle School, you will need to complete the Online Check-In process for each child. It is our sincere hope that by using Online Check-In, the start of the new school year will be stress free. To access Online Check-In, click on Skyward. Once you’ve signed on to Skyward you will see “19-20” Poulsbo Middle School Online Check-In” in the menu on the right. If your need help with your Skyward log-in or password, call or email Dawn Navarette, counseling secretary at 360-396-3213.

Year End Timeline for Student Library Materials

Throughout this year, students have been allowed to check out as many library materials as they need, providing they have no overdue items or fines. However, in order to collect all materials before the end of the school year, this policy will be revised as reflected in the following timeline: May 6: Students may have three library items as long as their ac-

count is up to date. Students who have overdue materials or fines may check out one item at a time in exchange for an overdue item.

May 27: Students may have two library items as long as their account is up to date. Students who have overdue materials or fines will not be allowed to checkout.

June 7: All student library materials and textbooks must be returned to the library. Eighth grade accounts must be cleared by this date in order to purchase tickets to the 8th Grade Celebra-tion.

Summer Checkout Beginning June 17, students who have returned a parent permission slip and have no outstanding fines will be allowed to checkout up to ten books for the summer. Permission slips are available in the library or to download from the library website: http://pms.nkschools.org/students/library

8th Grade Field Trip The 8th grade teachers would like to celebrate the end of the Class of 2023’s middle school years with a field trip to Seattle. This

trip will take place June 12 and will consist of a chaperoned walking tour of Seattle. There are two things parents can do to make sure this exciting event happens! Donations: We need buses to take us back and for th from the Bainbr idge fer ry ter minal. The buses cost money and to pay for them we are now accepting cash donations. If every student could donate at least $5 it would cover the cost of transportation. Please consider donating $5 or more toward this great adventure. Donations can be given to Ms. Sutton in room P4 or to Ms. Quinn in room P3. Chaperones: Clear your calendars because we will need chaperones! If you are willing to lead a group of four or five students around Seattle for the day (an itinerary will be provided), please be sure to send back the volunteer form attached to the field trip form your child will bring home in May. Thank you so much for your consideration in helping make the 8th grade field trip one to remember!

Yearbooks Sales Start June

We strongly encourage all students pay all fees prior to purchasing a

yearbook. We will have a limited yearbooks available. If you don't

remember if you purchased a yearbook, a list will be posted on the office

window during yearbook sales.

This spring, your child will take the Smarter Balanced tests in math and English language arts. Students in grades 5 and 8

will also take the Washington Comprehensive Assessment of Science (WCAS).

This is the fifth year our state will administer the Smarter Balanced tests and the second year for the WCAS. The results

from these tests will give a more accurate picture of whether students are on track to be ready for college or a career.

Most students will take the tests online. Our school is scheduled to take the tests in April and May, 2019.

opportunities.

HELP STUDENTS GET TO SCHOOL, STAY IN SCHOOL, AND GRADUATE

InvestED ’s model is unique. We provide funding to 660 secondary schools throughout Washington State. In the 2017-18 school year, this funding helped 24,245 students by paying for items such as shoes, college application fees, ASB cards, glass-es, warm coats, athletic equipment, and more - little things that make a big difference in a student’s life.

Donate to Poulsbo Middle School’s InvestED Fund today. Click on the link to donate. Since we are a partner school, choosing Poulsbo Middle School means 100% of your gift will be given directly to our school. Thank you for supporting our students.

PTANEWS–May!!!! Next PTA Meeting is May 13th, 5:30pm, Library

PTA Officer Nominees needed!

WE NEED TWO VERY IMPORTANT ROLES FILLED OR WE MAY NOT HAVE A

PTA BOARD FOR NEXT YEAR! Get involved and meet other parents who care! PTA President: (Stasie moves on to the High School)

This role IS MUCH LESS involved at the middle school level than it is at the elementary school level by far! It

is easy! THE PMS STAFF IS VERY SUPPORTIVE! The President over sees the various positions (fills in as

needed with the Vice President, runs the monthly meetings, works as a liaison to the school along with other po-

sitions, gives detail to the school Secretary for the monthly newsletter and speaks to the parents at the Panther

Preview and 6th Grade Parent Orientation. Some of these duties can be delegated out as well.

Staff Appreciation: (Sara moves on to the High School)

This person organizes and plans the monthly staff appreciation events, sets up the online volunteer site, and

gives the info to the Membership chair to request volunteers through the PTA email as well. Super Fun job!!

The PMS STAFF REALLY APPRECIATES THIS AND WILL LOVE YOU FOR DOING IT!

We are very happy to have seasoned PTA Officers & Committee Members returning to the other positions for

next year to do it again! QUESTIONS? Contact me, Stasie Pike, PTA President, at [email protected] . Jennifer, Sara, and Stasie will still be around

to ask questions and give helpful info. Thank you for your support!!!!!!!!!!!!

8th GRADE CELEBRATION is happening soon!!!

The 8th grade celebration is June 8th from 7 to 10 pm! This is a school event that is created

and put on in collaboration with parent volunteers. You do not need to be a PTA member to

assist with this event. Next meeting is May 6th at 5:00pm in the Auxillary Gym. Beth Moore is

heading up the planning committee with several great parent volunteers already signed up to

assist with Food, Decorations, donations, etc. For more information please contact Beth Moore

at [email protected]. You would be helping with a great group of parents to create a

memorable event for our 8th graders!
