New Zealand Open Underway
The 100th New Zealand Open Championship is underway in Arrowtown. In advance of the tournament commencing, New Zealand Golf was delighted to host a wonderful day of celebrations to mark the 100th staging. Joined by 16 past champions and invited guests from around the golfing world, a Champions Day was held at The Farm – the spectacular brand new par 3 course at The Hills. This was followed by a cocktail reception where the special history of the championship was honoured. To highlight the day, our New Zealand Open Patron Sir Bob Charles aced the 9th hole on The Farm much to the delight of all attendees. After celebrating the wonderful heritage of this championship, attention now swings to the golf event which is well underway. Peter Thomson Inducted to the New Zealand Golf Hall of Fame
Nine‐time New Zealand Open champion Peter Thomson was inducted to the New Zealand Golf Hall of Fame on the eve of the 100th New Zealand Open. Thomson is the ninth member of the Hall of Fame and the first Australian to be honoured in this manner after becoming the most prolific champion to win the title and played a huge part in putting the New Zealand Open on the world map. Thomson also won the prestigious Open Championship five‐times in 1954, 1955, 1956, 1958 and 1965 to make him one of Australia’s finest golfers. His nine New Zealand Open victories were between 1950 and 1971 where he led the movement across the Tasman and in 1958 he brought Gary Player, Harold Henning and David Thomas to New Zealand with the field regarded at the time as the best ever to contest the championship. Peter Thomson was recognized internationally for his stellar career when he was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1988. As New Zealand Golf celebrate the 100th playing of the New Zealand Open, there is no golfer more worthy than Peter Thomson who’s name will be forever be linked with this championship. Thomson’s record:
‐ Open Champion, 1954, 1955, 1956, 1958 and 1965
‐ New Zealand Open Champion, 1950, 1951, 1953, 1955, 1959, 1960, 1961, 1965 and 1971

‐ Twenty nine European Tour titles
‐ A further thirty professional wins worldwide

‐ Eleven US Senior Tour titles
LOVE Golf Live Long
This month sees the launch of Love Golf Live Long.
A programme dedicated to understanding and promoting the physical and cognitive benefits of golf. Did you know golfers live, on average, 5 years longer than non‐golfers? We have the research to back it. Did you know that playing a round of golf can reduce stress levels and symptoms of anxiety and depression.
It can also increase self‐esteem, self‐worth and self‐confidence?

Research – 2019 Club Member Experience Survey
New Zealand Golf, in partnership with Sport New Zealand, is undertaking an important piece of research to find out what is important to golfers and how they view the experience within their club. We will be encouraging golf club members to take part in this research. It will only take about 10 minutes to complete and provide guidance for golf clubs on how they can improve the experience for their members and direction for New Zealand Golf to better support golf clubs. The premise being the better the experience, the more likely someone is going to continue to play at and act as an advocate to attract others to the club, thus retaining and growing participation through the club. Respondents will go into a draw to win a fantastic prize package as an incentive to take part. Nielsen, an independent research company will support New Zealand Golf to undertake the survey. At the end of the project, a summary of the national results will be shared with you.
5
New Zealand Golf will be sending an invitation to golf club members by email and the survey will be open from 11 March until the 30 March. If you have any questions or would like to support this research by requesting a link to send directly to your golf club members as a way to participate in the survey and gather feedback for your club, please email [email protected]
