Notes on the Dealer-Manufacturer Relations Survey Equipment Dealers Association - 2016

INTRODUCTION

The Equipment Dealers Association (EDA) annually conducts the Dealer-Manufacturer Relations

Survey. This survey allows equipment dealers an opportunity to rate the companies whose products

they represent on 12 key categories of dealership operations and support.

This report contains valuable information about the relationship between dealers and their suppliers.

Both manufacturers and dealers have found the data to have value in improving product and service

quality and promoting top-ranked products to consumers.

Many manufacturers have used the survey results to promote their performance to their dealer

network and end-users. They have also used the results as a means to support change and

improvements within their organizations. Dealers have used the results to evaluate potential new

product lines, for competitive comparisons with brands they handle and to communicate areas of

strengths and needs for improvement of their represented manufacturers.

The survey results provide an accurate assessment of dealer attitudes regarding the lines they

represent. It is important to note that the dealer ratings represent an assessment of satisfaction

captured in a singular moment in time. The results could change relatively quickly due to a number of

external factors or situations.

Manufacturer Classifications - In an effort to recognize the operational differences between

manufacturers, they are placed into one of four classifications, defined as follows:

Full-Line Manufacturers – Equipment manufacturers who produce, distribute and market a full

complement of farm and ranch equipment including combines, harvesting machines, tractors

and implements.

Tractor Manufacturers – Equipment manufacturers who produce, distribute and market

tractors of varying horsepower used primarily in farm and ranch, construction, landscaping,

municipal and land owner operations.

Shortline Manufacturers – Equipment manufacturers who produce, distribute and market

implements used primarily in farm and ranch, construction, landscaping, municipality and land

owner operations. These products may include planters, tillage, sprayers, skid steer loaders,

post-hole diggers, and small horsepower tractors not affiliated with a Full-Line or Tractor

Manufacturer.

OPE Manufacturers – Equipment manufacturers who produce, distribute and market outdoor

power equipment used in commercial and residential applications for turf, lawn and/or grounds

maintenance. These products may include chainsaws, mowers, trimmers, edgers, blowers,

sprayers, pruners and similar items not affiliated with a Full-Line, Tractor or Shortline

Manufacturer.

Report Contents - This summary report contains response data in both table and graph formats for

the following areas:

1. Rating compilations and comparisons for the four manufacturer categories plus an aggregate

for all manufacturers.

2. Dealer Ratings for the 12 key categories of dealership operations and support.

3. Ratings by individual brands (55 manufacturers) for each of the 12 rated categories with

comparisons to 2015 and the aggregate means for the respective manufacturing classification.

METHODOLOGY

Dealers were asked to select and rate the manufacturers they represent in each of the 12 categories

on a 1-7 rating scale with the following descriptors:

1 = extremely dissatisfied

2 = dissatisfied

3 = somewhat dissatisfied

4 = neutral

5 = somewhat satisfied

6 = satisfied

7 = extremely satisfied

Each dealer respondent was able to select and rate up to seven manufacturers. After the initial

selection, respondents were prompted to rate each company within the 12 categories.

The survey questionnaire included embedded data, which allows for more detailed reporting. As a

result, we are able to provide Manufacturer Members of EDA with more detailed statistical data from

their dealer ratings as an added benefit of membership. For an additional fee, we are also able to

conduct confidential follow-up surveys for manufacturers interested in collecting more specific

Survey Distribution - The Dealer-Manufacturer Relations Survey was distributed to 12,769 dealers on

February 1, 2016 and remained active until February 26, 2016. Distribution included 3,697 dealer

members and more than 9,000 non-member dealers. Each survey link was unique to the recipient,

which prevented the survey from being taken more than once. To assist in distribution, twenty

manufacturers provided comprehensive lists of their U.S. and Canadian dealer networks, as compared

to sixteen companies in 2015. Extensive effort was expended in seeking to avoid duplication of email

addresses.

Response Rates - Dealer responses were collected anonymously by a third party research firm. There were 2,321 individual dealers who participated in the survey for a total response rate of 18 percent,

compared to 15 percent in 2015. EDA members represented 30.7 percent of the respondents and 69.3 percent were non-members. There was no significant change from 2015.

STATISTICS

The 55 manufacturers featured in this report received a minimum number of dealer ratings as required

to be included in the report. Each company’s mean score for each of the 12 rated categories is

measured against the mean for all manufacturers in their classification along with the previous year’s

rating in bar graph form. Variance and standard deviation data are not reported in this summary, but

can be made available upon request for an additional fee.

When reviewing each company’s mean for the 12 rated categories, a clear majority (82 percent) rated

at 5 - somewhat satisfied or higher. The average for all manufacturers was 5.39, compared to 5.33 in

2015. Roughly 11 percent rated at 6 – satisfied or higher.

The table below shows the mean for each manufacturer classification on the 1-7 scale for all 12 rated

categories over the past three years.

Ranking of Rating Category by Importance - For this year’s survey, dealers were asked to rate the importance of each of the 12 rated categories as it relates to the overall relationship with a manufacturer. As shown in the table below, most respondents rated each category as Important to Very Important. The mean number represents the degree of importance, and the lower the number, the more important the category.

Dealers provided a total of 9,180 individual manufacturer ratings in 2016compared to 6,671 in 2015 - a 37.6% increase.

Every manufacturer experienced an increase in dealer ratings from 2015except three which experienced a slight decline in ratings.
