    Background

    DescriptiveCatalogingofRareMaterials(Books),referredtohereafterasDCRM(B),isthirdindirectdescentfromBibliographicDescriptionofRareBooks(BDRB).BDRBwaspublishedin1981astheinterpretationsoftheLibraryofCongressforAACR2,rules2.122.18,onearlyprintedmonographs.Whenitwasdueforrevision,theRBMSBibliographicStandardsCommitteeunderJackieM.DooleyteamedupwithBenR.TuckerandRobertEwaldoftheLibraryofCongresstoproduceDescriptiveCatalogingofRareBooks(DCRB),whichappearedin1991.In1998,RobertL.Maxwell,thenchairoftheBibliographicStandardsCommittee,inauguratedthecurrentrevision.

    Incontrasttotheprevioustwoeditionsoftherarebookcatalogingrules,theLibraryofCongresspreferredtoberesponsibleforcommentingonandapprovingthetextratherthanactivelyengagedinwritingit.DirectorforCatalogingBeacherWiggins(nowDirectorforAcquisitionsandBibliographicAccess)firstauthorizedtherevisionandtheBibliographicStandardsCommitteesleadroleinit,andBarbaraB.Tillett,ChiefoftheCatalogingPolicyandSupportOffice,confirmedhisdecision.AlongwithElizabethRobinson(teamleaderforrarebookcataloging),CatalogingPolicyandSupportOfficemembersMargaretDetweilerandRobertEwald(bothnowretired)andJudithKuhagenhavescrutinizeddraftsandmonitoredDCRM(B)sprogress.

    DCRM(B)wasalreadywellunderwaywhenworkonRDA:ResourceDescriptionandAccess(thencalledAACR3)wasannounced.TheDCRM(B)editorsbrieflyconsidered,thenrejected,postponingfurtherworkuntilafterRDAspublication.Weagreeditwouldbeunwisetodelay,giventheprogressalreadymadeonDCRM(B)andtheconsiderableinvestmenttodateoftime,labor,andmoney.

    ChangesfromDCRB

    ThemostsignificantchangesfromDCRBare:newintroductorysectionsonObjectivesandPrinciplesandPrecatalogingDecisions;theexplicitincorporationofmachinemadebooksintotheruletextandexamples;theadditionofArea6;anexpandedappendixonearlyletterformsandsymbols(includingimagesofearlylettersandsymbolsaccompaniedbytheircorrecttranscriptions);andnewappendixesoncollectionlevelcataloging,corelevelcataloging,variationsrequiringthecreationofanewbibliographicrecord,andindividualissuesofserials.

    DCRM(B)givesexpandedguidanceandprescribesamorerigorousandconsistentapproachtotranscriptionthandidDCRB,andincorporatesasharpdistinctionbetweeninformationtranscribedfromthesourceandinformationthathasbeensuppliedbythecataloger.Transcribedinformationisnevertobeplacedwithinsquarebrackets(unlesstheletterorcharacterisunclear;see0G6.2).Conversely,thepresenceofsquarebracketsinthoseareasofthedescriptionthatrequiretranscription(seeintroductorysectionIII.2.2)immediatelyandunambiguouslyidentifiestextassuppliedorinterpolated.Anothernotablechangerelatedtomorerigoroustranscriptionprinciplesisthatromandatesinthesourcearetranscribedasromanratherthanarabicnumerals.

    Otherchangesincluderestrictingtranscriptionofthestatementofresponsibilitytothechiefsourceofinformation;theinclusionofdustjacketsasaprescribedsourceofinformationforareas2,4,and6;adiscussiononthetranscriptionofmanufacturersinArea4;theexclusionofcopyrightdatesfromthedateofpublicationelement;theeliminationofspecialstatusforengravedtitlepagesinthestatementofextent;thedroppingofperiodsaftercmandmm(approvedforAACR2in2002butimplementationdeferreduntilpublicationinRDA),andanexpandedsectiononlocalnotes.Area0issubstantiallyreorganized,andthelanguagethroughouthasbeenmademoreconsistentandexplicit.

    I.1.DescriptiveCatalogingofRareMaterials

    DCRM(B)isthefirstofseveralmanualsprovidingspecializedcatalogingrulesforvariousformatsofrarematerialstypicallyfoundinrarebook,manuscript,andspecialcollectionrepositories.1Together,thesemanualsformDescriptiveCatalogingofRareMaterials(DCRM),anoverarchingconceptratherthanapublicationinitsownright.DCRMcomponentmanualsforserialsandmusicareinpreparation.OthercomponentswillbeaddedtotheDCRMfamilyastheyaredeveloped.

    I.2.DescriptiveCatalogingofRareMaterials(Books)

    DCRM(B)providesguidelinesandinstructionsfordescriptivecatalogingofrarebooks,thatis,printedtextualmonographsreceivingspecialtreatmentwithinarepository.Unlikeitspredecessors,whichwereintendedtoapplyexclusivelytopre1801imprints,DCRM(B)maybeusedforprintedmonographsofanyageortypeofproduction.Raremaps,music,serials,andmanuscriptsofanytypeare

    I.3Needforspecialrules

    Printedmaterialsinspecialcollectionsoftenpresentsituationsnotordinarilyencounteredinthecatalogingoftypicalmodernpublications(e.g.,variationbetweencopies,cancelledleaves,etc.)andmayrequireadditionaldetailsofdescriptioninordertoidentifysignificantcharacteristics(e.g.,bibliographicalformat,typeface,etc.).Suchdetailsareimportantfortworeasons.Theypermitthereadyidentificationofcopiesofaresource(e.g.,aseditions,impressions,orissues),andtheyprovideamoreexactdescriptionoftheresourceasanartifact.

    I.4.Scopeofapplication

    DCRM(B)isespeciallyappropriateforthedescriptionofpublicationsproducedbeforetheintroductionofmachineprintinginthenineteenthcentury.However,itmaybeusedtodescribeanyprintedmonograph,includingmachinepresspublications,artistsbooks,privatepressbooks,andothercontemporarymaterials.

    Theserulesmaybeappliedcategoricallytobooksbasedondateorplaceofpublication(e.g.,allBritishandNorthAmericanimprintspublishedbefore1831),ormaybeappliedselectively,accordingtotheadministrativepolicyoftheinstitution,whichmaychoosetocatalogsomeorallofitsholdingsatamoredetailedlevelofdescriptionthanthatprovidedforinAACR2.(SeeintroductorysectionX.1fordiscussiononchoosingappropriatecatalogingcodesandlevels.)

    I.5.Applicationwithinthebibliographicrecord

    Theserulescontaininstructionsforthedescriptiveelementsinbibliographicrecordsonly.Theydonotaddresstheconstructionandassignmentofcontrolledheadingsusedasmainandaddedentries,althoughbriefinstructionsrelatingtoheadingsandotheraccesspointsdoappearthroughout(e.g.,AppendixFisentirelydevotedtorecommendationsforuncontrolledtitleaddedentries).

    II.1.AACR2,ISBD(A),andothercatalogingdocumentation

    AsarevisionofDCRB,DCRM(B)isbasedonAACR2asamendedbytheLibraryofCongressRuleInterpretations(LCRI),aswellasonthesecondeditionofISBD(A).TheLibraryofCongressauthorizesDCRM(B)asitsinterpretationofAACR2,2.1218.DCRM(B)deviatesinsubstancefromAACR2andLCRIonlywhenrequiredbytheparticulardescriptiveneedsofrarematerials.Inmattersofstyle,presentation,wording,andsubarrangementwithinareas,DCRM(B)followsitsownconventions.

    RefertoAACR2andLCRIforguidanceandinstructionsonmattersofdescriptionnotcoveredinDCRM(B).TherelevantsectionsofAACR2andLCRImustbeconsultedforrulesgoverningnameanduniformtitleheadingstobeusedasaccesspointsforauthors,editors,illustrators,printers,series,etc.Forsubjectheadings,numerouscontrolledvocabulariesareavailable;withintheUnitedStates,thesubjectheadingsoftheLibraryofCongressarewidelyused.Consultclassificationdocumentationforassignmentofcallnumbers.Forgenre/formheadings,consultthevariousspecializedthesauriissuedbytheRBMSBibliographicStandardsCommittee.Termsfromotherauthorizedthesauri(e.g.,theArt&ArchitectureThesaurusOnline)mayalsobeusedasappropriate.

    II.2.MARC21

    MARC21FormatforBibliographicDataisthepresumedformatforpresentationandcommunicationofmachinereadablecataloging.UseofDCRM(B),however,neednotberestrictedtoamachineenvironment,andMARC21isnotmandatory.ExamplesinthebodyofDCRM(B)areshownusingISBDpunctuation;useofMARC21codingappearsonlyinsomeoftheappendixes.CatalogersusingMARC21shouldfollowMARC21documentationforinput,andbeawareofhowtheirbibliographicsystemsinterpretMARC21codestoautomaticallygeneratedisplayfeatures.Thisusuallymeans,forexample,thatthecatalogeromitspunctuationbetweenareas,parenthesesenclosingaseriesstatement,andcertainwordsprefacingformalnotes.

    III.Objectivesandprinciples

    TheinstructionscontainedinDCRMareformulatedaccordingtotheobjectivesandprinciplessetforthbelow.Theseobjectivesandprinciplesseektoarticulatethepurposeandnatureofspecializedcatalogingrulesforrarematerials.TheyareinformedbylongacceptedconceptsinbibliographicscholarshipandtheAngloAmericancatalogingtradition,aswellasbymorerecenttheoreticalworkimportanttotheconstructionandrevisionofcatalogingcodes,namelytheInternationalFederationofLibraryAssociationsandInstitutionsFunctionalRequirementsforBibliographicRecords(FRBR)andElaineSvenoniussTheIntellectualFoundationofInformationOrganization.Assuch,theobjectivesandprinciplesarealsoinconformitywiththeIFLAStatementofInternationalCataloguingPrinciples(2009).TheyassumefamiliaritywiththeFRBRtermsusedtocategorizeentitiesthataretheproductsofintellectualorartisticendeavor(work,expression,manifestation,anditem)aswellasbibliographictermsusedtodifferentiateamongtextualvariants(edition,issue,impression,andstate).Itishopedthattheseobjectivesandprincipleswillprovidecatalogers,andadministratorsofcatalogingoperations,withabetterunderstandingoftheunderlyingrationaleforDCRMinstructions.

    III.1.FunctionalobjectivesofDCRM

    Theprimaryobjectivesincatalogingrarematerialsarenodifferentfromthoseincatalogingothermaterials.Theseobjectivesfocusonmeetinguserneedstofind,identify,select,andobtainmaterials.However,usersofrarematerialsoftenbringspecializedrequirementstothesetasksthatcannotbemetbygeneralcatalogingrules,suchasthosecontainedinthelatestrevisionofAACR2.Inaddition,thestandardproductionpracticesassumedingeneralcatalogingrulesdonotalwaysapplytorarematerials.ThefollowingDCRMobjectivesaredesignedtoaccommodatetheseimportantdifferences.

    III.1.1.Usersmustbeabletodistinguishclearlyamongdifferentmanifestationsofanexpressionofawork

    Theabilitytodistinguishamongdifferentmanifestationsofanexpressionofaworkiscriticaltotheusertasksofidentifyingandselectingbibliographicresources.IngeneralcatalogingcodeslikeAACR2,itisassumedthatabbreviatedandnormalizedtranscriptionissufficienttodistinguishamongmanifestations.Usersofrarematerials,however,oftenrequirefuller,morefaithfultranscriptions,greaterdetailinthephysicaldescriptionarea,andcareful

    recordingofvariousdistinguishingpointsinthenotearea,inordertoidentifyseparatemanifestations.Additionally,usersofrarematerialsaretypicallyinterestedindrawingfinerdistinctionsamongvariantswithinmanifestationsthanareusersofothermaterials,includingnotsimplybetweeneditionsandissuesbutbetweenvariantimpressionsandstates;manyalsoneedtodistinguishbetweencopiesattheitemlevel.

    III.1.2.Usersmustbeabletoperformmostidentificationandselectiontaskswithoutdirectaccesstothematerials

    Usersofrarematerialsfrequentlyperformidentificationandselectiontasksundercircumstancesthatrequirethebibliographicdescriptiontostandasadetailedsurrogatefortheitem(e.g.,consultationfromadistance,limitedaccessduetothefragileconditionoftheitem,inabilitytophysicallybrowsecollectionshousedinrestrictedareas,etc.).Accuracyofbibliographicrepresentationincreasessubsequentefficiencyforbothusersandcollectionmanagers.Thesameaccuracycontributestothelongtermpreservationofthematerialsthemselves,byreducingunnecessarycirculationandexaminationofmaterialsthatdonotpreciselymeetusersrequirements.

    III.1.3.Usersmustbeabletoinvestigatephysicalprocessesandpostproductionhistoryandcontextexemplifiedinmaterialsdescribed

    Usersofrarematerialsroutinelyinvestigateavarietyofartifactualandpostproductionaspectsofmaterials.Forexample,theymaywanttolocatematerialsthatarerelatedbyprintingmethods,illustrationprocesses,bindingstylesandstructures,provenance,genre/form,etc.Theabilityofuserstoidentifymaterialsthatfitthesecriteriadependsuponfullandaccuratedescriptionsandtheprovisionofappropriateaccesspoints.

    III.1.4.Usersmustbeabletogainaccesstomaterialswhoseproductionorpresentationcharacteristicsdifferfrommodernconventions

    Inordertodistinguishamongmanifestations,generalcatalogingcodeslikeAACR2relyonexplicitbibliographicevidencepresentedinconventionalform(e.g.,aformaleditionstatementonthetitlepageoritsverso).Inrarematerials,suchexplicitevidencewilloftenbelackingorinsufficienttodistinguishamongdifferentmanifestations.Thatwhichisbibliographicallysignificantmaythusbeobscured.

    III.2.PrinciplesofDCRMconstructionTomeettheobjectiveslistedabove,DCRMreliesuponthefollowingsixprinciples.TheseprinciplesareinfluencedbythegeneralprinciplesofbibliographicdescriptionofferedbySvenonius:userconvenience;representation;sufficiencyandnecessity;standardization;andintegration.

    III.2.1.Rulesprovideguidancefordescriptionsthatallowuserstodistinguishclearlyamongdifferentmanifestationsofanexpressionofawork

    Thisprinciplederivesfromthegeneralprincipleofuserconvenienceandhasimplicationsforallareasofthebibliographicdescription.Theprinciplerelatestoobjective1statedabove.

    III.2.2.Rulesprovideforaccuraterepresentationsoftheentityasitdescribesitself,notablythroughinstructionsregardingtranscription,transposition,andomission

    Thisprinciplederivesfromthegeneralprinciplesofrepresentation(withitsrelatedsubprincipleofaccuracy)andofstandardization.Preciserepresentationisofparticularrelevanceinthoseareasofthedescriptionthatrequiretranscription(thetitleandstatementofresponsibilityarea,theeditionarea,thepublication,distribution,etc.,area,andtheseriesarea),butshouldnotbeignoredinthephysicaldescriptionandnoteareas.Thegeneralprinciplesofrepresentationandstandardizationstandingreatertensionwitheachotherwhencatalogingrarematerials.Faithfulnesstobothprinciplesmayrequiredescriptiveandannotativetreatmentnecessarilyexceedingthenorms(andattimesthevocabulary)establishedassufficientforthedescriptionofgeneralmaterials.Theprinciplerelatestoobjectives2and4statedabove.
