Student Support ServicesStudent Support Services provides
important information regarding graduation requirements, career options, and future educational opportunities. In addition, the counselors provide a variety of services and supports to aid successful educational and personal development. Students may arrange a conference with the School Counselor and, if necessary, a parent conference may be scheduled with the teacher for many reasons including:• Colleges, College Entrance Requirements• Trade Schools• Military Service• Area Vocational School Offerings• Exams: PSAT, SAT, ACT• Scheduling and Course Offerings• Personal Issues Interfering With Learning• Scholarships• Career Information• Program Planning• Test Interpretation• Study Tips• Test Taking TipsScholarships
Upcoming scholarships will be posted in Student Support Services, and on the school website. Students are responsible for check-ing this information. Students are responsible for completing all necessary paperwork for scholarships and obtaining all recommenda-tion letters, transcript requests, and scholar-ship essays. This requires advanced planning to give teachers time to complete references where necessary. Students must bear in mind that all scholarships have firm deadlines, and the timely submission of the applications must also allow for sufficient mailing time.
Financial Aid FormsFinancial Aid forms are available
in Student Support Services. In most cases, specific questions about Financial Aid Awards should be referred to the Financial Aid Office of the college chosen. Financial Aid Night is an opportunity for parents to gain valuable information. Financial Aid night is scheduled yearly in December in the High School Library.Add/Drop Course Procedures
A student may add or drop a course during the first ten days of the course. Any schedule changes made after that time will be at the discretion of the Principal after a meeting with the student and parent.
Transcript and RecommendationRequests: If a student or graduate
requires a transcript to be sent for col-lege admission, scholarship application, etc., the student must fill out a transcript request form at least one week prior to the date the transcript must be received. The time frame is important in assuring adequate mailing time. Transcript re-quests need to be submitted directly to the Student Support Services Secretary. Requests for letters of recommenda-tion from the School Counselor must be submitted, in writing, at least one week prior to the requested mailing date.
Grades 9-12 PromotionSuccessful completion of all courses will assure
that students will pass to the next grade level. Students experiencing academic difficulty will be passed to the next grade level according to the table below:
From Grade To Grade Total Completed Credits
9 10 510 11 1111 12 17
To be of senior status, students must have at least 17 credits and be able to complete the 22.5 credits required for graduation. Students also need passing scores on the Algebra, Living Environment, Global Studies, U.S. History, and English Regents Exams.

Credit Recovery It is important that students who
fail a course have the opportunity to make up the course to get back on track. Students can make up credit by repeating the entire course during the school year, summer school (if offered), or through the school approved credit recovery program. Eligible students can make up credit through the school approved credit recovery program. Information regarding credit recovery classes is available through Student Support Services.
National Honor SocietyGilbertsville-Mt. Upton has Honor
Society Chapters for students in grades 10-12 (National Honor Society). Students are considered for membership based on achieving a minimum grade point average of 89.5% or higher.
Once students are notified of their eligibility, they are asked to provide additional information about themselves so that the selection committee can make informed decisions regarding membership.
National Honor Society selection is based on evidence of student excellence in the following areas:
• Scholarship• Service• Character• LeadershipOnce inducted to Honor Society,
students are expected to maintain the standards of excellence. Students failing to maintain these standards may be subject to a warning, a probationary period, or dismissal.
Summer SchoolA. A middle/high school student who fails a
course may be eligible for summer school to earn course credit. • Some students may also attend summer
school for a review session prior to retaking a Regents Exam in August. A student can take up to two academic courses each morning during the summer school program.
B. Information regarding summer school classes is available through Student Support Services. The grading process for summer school includes the grade achieved in the course that was failed at 25% of the final grade. Please see Grading for Summer School for specific information on summer school grade calculations.
C. Transportation is provided by the District from GMU School to the summer school site. Parents are responsible to transport their students to and from GMU. All school rules and student conduct expectations are in effect during summer school. Students who fail to adhere to the transportation safety rules will be dismissed from the program.
D. Note: August Regents will be offered each summer at BOCES. Students must pre-register if planning to retake a Regents exam in the summer. Contact your school counselor to register for August Regents exams.
Student RecordsThe procedures for the confidentiality of
student records shall be consistent with federal statutes, including the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA) and its implementing regulations and the Commissioner’s Regulations. (See FERPA, and PPRA,)
Grading SystemGrades are used to indicate achievement and
development in each class or subject area in which a student is enrolled. Student’s grades will reflect what they earned during each marking period. If a student gets below a 50 for any of the first 3 marking periods, they have the opportunity to earn a 50 in that marking period by passing the marking period that follows. For example, if a student earns a 45 in the first marking period and gets a 65 in the second marking period, the first marking period grade will be changed to a 50. This procedure maximizes a student’s opportunity for success. In the fourth marking period, a student’s grade cannot be changed to a 50 if it is below a 50.
Grading for Credit RecoveryThe original failing course grade will be reconciled
with a minimum of 65 upon completing and passing the credit recovery course. The final average will be determined by combining the credit recovery grade with the grade you received in that course during the year. The credit recovery grade counts for ¾ of the final grade, and the school year grade counts for ¼.
Grading Summer SchoolA student who completes but fails to pass a 1-unit
course during the school year is eligible to attend summer school to earn a passing grade in the course. The grade earned during the school year will be combined with the summer school grade to achieve the final grade for the course. The school year grade will count as 25%, while the summer school grade will count as 75% of the final grade.
Progress ReportsProgress reports are issued every 5 weeks for
grade 7-12 and report cards every 10 weeks. In addition to numerical grades, teacher comments are also included. Teachers send information home and make phone calls to alert parents about students experiencing academic or behavioral difficulties.

Parent/Teacher Communication
Parent ConferencesWe believe the well-informed parent is more
able to contribute to the success of our students. For this reason, parent/teacher contacts are encouraged via written communication, telephone conferences and/or personal meetings.
Parents may initiate a conference with the teacher by leaving a message at the Main Office requesting that the teacher contact them. When a parent requests a conference with a teacher, the teacher will make every effort to arrange a mutually convenient time. Such conferences will be planned around the teacher’s schedule so as not to interfere with class time. Appointments may be arranged with the School Counselor or the Building Principal by contacting their secretaries.
Teacher email addresses can be found on the school website: www.gmucsd.org. Click on the parent button, and then offices and staff button to get an email directory.
EmergenciesAll emergency school closings will be
announced on WCHN/WKXZ, WDOS/WSRK, WZOZ, WDLA, WDHI, WIYN, WTBD, WBKT, WCDO, WSKG, WHWK, WAAL, WWYL, WLTB, YNN TV, News Channel 34, WBNG TV, evesun.com, and all closings are posted on our website at www.gmucsd.org and facebook.com/gmucsd.
Visitors to the School• Visitors must sign in at the desk in the lobby when
they enter the building and obtain a visitor’s permit. The visitor’s permit is to be displayed at all times. When leaving, visitors are to sign out.
• Students attending other schools who wish to visit GMU must obtain approval in advance, from the Building Principal. These visits will be granted only under special circumstances as they disrupt the in-structional focus.
• Parents are asked to make appointments in advance when wishing to visit teachers, counselors, and ad-ministrators to discuss student progress or program.

Winter brings hats, boots, mittens and sometimes head lice! Please routinely check your child’s head for lice and/or nits. If you find any cause for concern, please contact the school nurse. Children may not attend school with head lice. After treatment is given at home, students must come to the Health Office prior to going to the classroom for a recheck.Helpful recommendations if your child is ill:• Students with fevers of 100°F or above

Internet UseInternet access is available to students and teachers in the
Gilbertsville-Mt. Upton Central School District. We believe the Internet offers vast, diverse and unique resources to both students and teachers. Our goal in providing this service to teachers and students is to promote educational excellence in the Gilbertsville-Mt. Upton Central School by facilitating resource sharing and communication.
The Internet is a global network connecting thousands of computers all over the world and millions of individual users. Students and teachers have access to:1. Electronic mail communication with people all over the
world;2. Commercial/retail product information including the
possibility of purchase capabilities;3. Information and news from many research institutions;4. Public domain and shareware of all types;5. Discussion groups on a variety of topics; and6. Many university library catalogs, such as the Library
of Congress, CARL (Colorado Alliance of Research Libraries) and ERIC.With access to computers and people all over the
world also comes the possibility of encountering content that may not be considered to be of educational value. The Gilbertsville-Mt. Upton Central School District has taken available precautions to restrict access to content and/or materials of a controversial nature. However, on a global network it is impossible to control all content and a user may discover controversial information. We believe that the valuable information and interaction available on this worldwide network far outweighs the possibility that users may procure materials that are not consistent with our educational goals. The smooth operation at the Gilbertsville-Mt. Upton Central School network relies on the proper conduct of users who must adhere to strict guidelines. These guidelines are provided here so users are aware of the ethical and legal responsibilities that they are required to assume.
If a Gilbertsville-Mt. Upton Central School District user violates any of these provisions, his or her access privileges will be terminated and future access may be denied.
School Meals ProgramAll students are given an account with the School Meals Program. Accounts
are to be used as debit accounts. Money is to be placed on the account before purchasing food is allowed. If your child does not have money on their account they cannot purchase breakfast or lunch nor can they purchase a snack.
Students must have a permission note/form signed by their parent or guardian stating that they are allowed to purchase snack and/or extras to their account.
Breakfast is Served!Mornings can be hectic in a busy household with kids. Amid the frantic
searching for hairbrushes, clean socks, and homework, breakfast sometimes takes a back seat. We’ve all heard the adage, “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day,” and we all strive to eat a good breakfast, but sometimes it can be difficult to convince a groggy child to gulp down a hearty, well-balanced breakfast as the bus pulls up the street.
We have a solution for you: Breakfast at School! GMU offers daily breakfast, with a wide range of options to please any child. Here’s a sampling of Susan Sebeck and staff’s breakfast menu: “Elvis Presley” Muffins (banana peanut butter and chocolate chip), strawberry yogurt parfaits, breakfast sandwiches on English muffins, and cheese omelets.
Breakfast is affordable: If you qualify for free and reduced price meals, you qualify for our breakfast program, with no additional paperwork. Reduced meals breakfast is 25¢ and regular priced breakfast is $1.25.
GMU students are given time in their schedule every morning to eat breakfast in the cafeteria, so we invite you to take the stress off and leave the cooking to us!

However, Gilbertsville-Mt. New York State Education Law 2-a and two federal laws require the School District receiving assistance under the Elementary and Second-ary Education Act of 1965 (ESEA) to provide military recruiters, upon request, with student names, ad-dresses and telephone listings—un-less parents have advised the school district that they do not want their student’s information disclosed without their prior written consent. New York State Education Law 2-a also permits disclosure. If you do not want Gilbertsville-Mt. Upton to disclose some or all directory information from your child’s edu-cation records without your prior written consent, you must notify the District in writing within two weeks of your child(ren) starting school.

The Gilbertsville-Mt. Upton Central School District is committed to an educational environment that assures equitable opportunity for individuals to become College and Career Ready and ultimately, responsible, productive members of society. We will encourage all individuals to do their personal best, that they may gain a lifelong enthusiasm for work and learning.
The district vision and operating principles listed below are a natural extension of our mission. As such, they are intended to be a framework which will guide the district’s future direction. They also serve as benchmarks by which district progress can be measured. The environment of our district should reflect our vision and principles and it is the responsibility of the administration and staff to see that these ideals and principles are carried out. The GMU Board of Education expects all staff to model the values and ideals embodied in these important principles.
As a learning community, we understand that we must continually review, monitor and adjust our mission, operating principles and instructional goals of our district. Furthermore, we acknowledge and understand that everything we do is done in the best interest of the students of the Gilbertsville-Mt. Upton School District.
Therefore, we understand that:• The best interest of the child is held with the highest importance when dealing with them in person, on the telephone, or
by mail.• A student is a person who brings us his or her readiness to learn. It is our job to handle each student individually in
a manner which best supports them and maximizes their potential.• Our priorities are determined by what our students need.• These fundamental beliefs underlie our vision for our district as embodied in the statements below.
Our Mission
