Flyers Fourth In A-10 Preseason Coaches Poll

Dayton was picked to finish fourth in the Atlantic 10 inthe Preseason Coaches Poll. UD was slotted behindA-10 newcomer Charlotte, 2005 A-10 West DivisionChampion George Washington and Richmond.Fordham and 2005 A-10 Tournament Champion RhodeIsland followed the Flyers in fifth and sixth placerespectively.

A New Look Atlantic10

With the addition of Charlotte and Saint Louis to theAtlantic 10 Conference this season, Dayton will playin a reformatted, 14-team conference withoutdivisions. UD is scheduled to play a 27-gameconference schedule against nine different A-10opponents. Those conference series will also playwith a different format in 2006 as each weekend willbe scheduled for three nine-inning games on Friday,Saturday and Sunday. Previously, the A-10 playedtwo seven-inning games on Saturday followed by anine-inning game on Sunday.

A New York State of Mind

Dayton will be playing for one of six berths in the 2006Atlantic 10 Baseball Championships, that will be heldMay 24-27 on the campus of Fordham University. Thegames will be played on a newly renovated HoulihanPark at Jack Coffey Field with the winner earning anautomatic berth into the NCAA Regionals.

Strength of Schedule

In 2006, the Flyers will face a total of six teams thatplaced in the top three in their conference or division in2005.

Construction Underway On Courtyard by Marriott,

University of Dayton

Construction has started on a new hotel on Edwin C.Moses Boulevard, across from the Time Warner CableStadium. It will be the first hotel development within thecity of Dayton since the early 1980s and will house102 rooms. Work should be completed later this year.

Making a Difference for MDA

At each Flyer weekend home game, a collection will betaken to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association. At the end of the season the total, which will be matchedby the UD baseball team, will be presented to the MDAwhile the Flyers work at the annual MDA telethon onLabor Day Weekend. On May 2, Wright State madecollection at its home doubleheader with the Flyers toraise $410 that will be added to the total to be donatedby UD this September.

Trubee Racks Up Preseason Honors

Senior pitcher Luke TrubeeLuke TrubeeLuke TrubeeLuke TrubeeLuke Trubee earned a number of awardsbefore the start of the 2006 season. He was named tothe Louisville Slugger Preseason All-America SecondTeam by Collegiate Baseball newspaper. Trubee wasalso placed on the Watch List for the Wallace Award(top collegiate baseball player) and the Roger ClemensAward (top collegiate pitcher). He was recently namedto the mid-season Watch List for the Roger ClemensAward.

University of Dayton head coach Tony VittorioTony VittorioTony VittorioTony VittorioTony Vittoriohas solidified himself as one of the baseballprogram’s greatest managers since he took overbeginning with the 2000 season.

This claim is backed by a resume that includesthree 30-win seasons including a school record 36victories in 2005 and UD’s only three trips to theAtlantic 10 Championship.

However, Vittorio would give many reasons whythose numbers represent a starting point ratherthan a destination for a program that had only onewinning season in the decade prior to his arrival.

Vittorio led Dayton to a program record 596 hitsin 2005 while ranking second in runs scored (397)and at bats (1,932), third in batting average (.308)and RBI (358). The 2005 Flyers also had a solidpitching staff with 314 strkeouts (third most inschool history) and a 4.41 team ERA (fifth best)which included 12th round draft pick CraigCraigCraigCraigCraigStammenStammenStammenStammenStammen.

UD also won two of three games against #19Notre Dame on Feb. 26 & 27 in Mesa, AZ atHoHoKam Park, the Spring Training home of theChicago Cubs. It marked the highest ranked teamever defeated by the Flyer in a three-game series.

But as bright as the future appears for Vittorio’sFlyers, his past still stands at the top of UD’s recordbooks. In 2002, UD shattered record after record, boasting school-highs in strikeouts (332) whilewinning 32 games, as well as an April 16 win overIPFW that gave Vittorio his 300th career victory.

His ability to mold professional-caliber playerswas also validated during the year, with fourmembers of the ’02 squad going on to play sometype of professional ball.

A year earlier, Vittorio guided Dayton to its firstwinning season in three years, setting a then singleseason school record for victories with 32, whileleading Dayton to its first berth in post-season playsince joining the A-10 in 1996. The 32-wins in 2001was just the second winning season in three years, and gave promise to a program that had eclipsedthe .500 mark just one time during the 1990s.

A School Record Offense in 2005

A big reason for Dayton’s school record 36-winseason in 2005 was an offense that was among thebest ever at UD. The Flyers broke the school record forhits in a season (596) while also ranking in the topthree all-time in runs (2nd, 397), batting average (3rd,.308) and RBI (3rd, 358).

The Flyers rankthird in the Atlantic 10 in both runs scored and RBIdespite having just the fifth best batting average.Dayton also ranks 17th nationally in doubles and 87thin runs scored.

‘Small Ball’ Produces Big Results
