    How did you get into Atea?

    A while after I left myprevious job I was contactedby an English speaking mansaying they are looking fora Chief accountant. Thatwasnt really my prole, but Icame to have this interviewI had with Nicolas (NicolasAlbana, managing directorof Atea). He was constantlylooking at me, as if he was

    scanning my brain. He didntbrag about the company (asmy foreign managers kepttelling me Latvian mindsetpeople do at interviews),but told me everything thatwas not working and whatis expected from me to be

    xed. I agreed to be chiefaccountant, but as it wasntof my interest, the companywas redesigned to t myprole and background.

    What is it like to be a nancedirector in an IT company?

    Im not a purely nancialperson. I have to overviewmany areas of a businesswhen we have a new client.When I started at Atea, on

    my third day I was sent toan IT seminar, where theonly word I understood washelp-desk, and that was theexam I passed. I had to putsome effort to understandeverything. Now when Imeet a developer, I ask whatprogramming language and

    Has the career path youchose proven to meet youexpectations?

    When I had the interviewwith Nicolas this strangeand impressive personalityin front of me this made

    me be 200% sure that I amin the right place. I donthave any issues doingthings that are not in my jobdescription and it is thewhole companys policy. Iknow I am where I wantedto be, with a manager whois constantly generating

    new ideas, and I have tomake sure we executethem. I really like workingwith processes analysis,understanding every detailand how it is set up, what Ican do to improve it. OnceI said out loud that processcontrolling is what I wouldlike to do, and in a couple

    of months we started theinitiative of shared servicecenter, which is exactlyabout what I wanted to do.

    When you hire someoneyoung, what proles andabilities are you lookingfor?

    Ill tell you a story: Once

    a young girl came to theinterview and we showedher our chart, she tooka look at it and just said:This is wrong!... We werespeechless. Then she wentto the screen, pointingout that there should bean additional function to

    make everything work.Now she is leading theunit, i.e. 60 people. Youhave to prove you have thespecial knowledge in youreld, that you are aboveaverage, and can actuallydo things that make youstand out of the crowd. We

    dont care so much of thecertications and what youare saying, its just words. It

    goes for ones personal lifeas well: you have to thinkabout who you are, whyyou are here, what you liketo do and what you wantto achieve. You are the onewho makes the life aroundyou; you have to make sureyouve done your best, be itorganizing team events orsuggesting innovations forthe company. Thats whatmakes people passionate. Ifyoure not burning for it, itwont work out.

    What did you do before you

    worked in LOreal?By the time I graduated I hadalready been working for Ernst& Young in audit. However, itdid not take me long to realizethat the job was completely

    not for me. Although I hadalways thought that nancewas my eld, the way I hadimagined it and the wayit actually was were twocompletely different things.

    How did you end up in your

    position at LOreal?

    I took some time off anddecided to apply for amarketing position there, eventhough previously I had neverimagined it being a place forme. After two interviews I wasoffered a paid internship in

    nance. The atmosphere herechanged my opinion aboutboth LOreal and nancecompletely. The internshipafter a few months was morelike a full time job and verysoon I started working forLOreal.

    How does your typical month

    look like?

    In my current position in LOrealI am controlling expensesof the luxury productsdepartment. In the beginningof the month we have amonth closing procedure:we accumulate all the data,make all the reports aboutthe previous month. Then we

    are having meetings with myboss, having meetings withmarketing and looking wherethey overspent usually. Duringthe middle of the month I cannally get down to doing mymonthly tasks as well as start

    projects on my own. I candecide that this month weneed to look into somethingin more detail or at a differentangle. We close the monthby having some internaldeadlines for gathering dataand then sending it to Paris.

    What are the more exciting

    things you get to do?

    Now every quarter we havea new project called Not just about business whereall the departments from theBaltics gather and presentsome interesting things thatare happening in their elds.Each October we go to Paristo defend our budget and

    What qualities do youconsider to be the best ofyour rm?

    I love the French way ofworking: I have a lot ofresponsibilities and optionsto do things. I am capable ofdoing things the way I seeit and the way I want. Thiscreates a sense of freedom.

    People here are very creative,your opinion matters and youcan make propositions anddecisions. Even if the work getsreally intensive and stressful,people still manage to havefun. Like if somebody wereunder stress, someone would just come and poke him or herand say, Hey, what is wrong?

    How do you see careergrowth within your rm?

    Here are possible positionsnot only within a rm, but alsoif you are willing to go abroadLOreal will do everything tond a position for you. Hencewe have pretty internationalenvironment: Lithuanians,Estonians. It is not that muchdifferent from SSE Riga. There isno harsh distinction betweendifferent management levels:my previous boss would justwrite to everyone and inviteto come and see ice hockey.And of course, working in anenvironment with ladies isalways a lot of fun.

    I started a consultingbusiness in 1992, later Iwas headhunted to ArthurAndersen, which thenmerged with Ernst & Young.

    Ever since then I have beenworking here and do notregret it. One can describeworking for Ernst & Young in

    many ways, but one of the

    most special things here isthat it feels like a university.Young people, fresh fromschool, are coming in and

    going out all the time.Ernst & Young is the perfectrst job after graduation there are high demandsbut the employees also getaccess to lots of informationand experience, theydevelop even further andcan go on with their careers

    Our biggest resource ispeople: they are the coreof the whole company andtherefore we take goodcare of our employees. Forexample, we have a smallkindergarten in the officefor employees who have

    kids, as the majority of theemployees are in the agewhere they often havesmall children. This providesa very exible and freshenvironment. The samesentiment can be felt allthrough the company.

    How do people who haveworked for Ernst & Youngdescribe their formeremployer?

    Many young people start

    off their careers here. I oftentell them that the likelihoodof them still working for usafter 2 to 3 years is not very

    high, as it is a very tough andcompetitive atmosphere,and many drop out.However, whatever they dolater on in life, if someoneasks them after ten yearsabout their best employerthey usually would saythat it has been Ernst &Young. I have asked thisquestion from many formeremployees and they all haveresponded by saying thatfrom Ernst & Young they

    have gained the most fortheir professional careers.

    Well, I was sure that I did

    not want to go for banking,nance or the Big Four, asthe majority of students. Iwas inclined more towards

    the marketing or sales eld,something more fun andpersonal. Oriame was moreof a lucky shot for me.And I was very lucky indeedto come across it during the

    rst Days of Opportunities,which was called Career Daysback then. The main thing thatfascinated me was the people

    I met at Oriames stand whowere giving out candy. Thatmay have seemed cheap, butthey did it with such a smile intheir eyes... Later when I cameto the rst job interview in

    What did you do before this job?

    This was my rst corporate job after graduating SSE Riga.Before that I had only doneoccasional summer jobs inforestry, copy center, duringSSE time - selling bootleg(pirate) music CDs etc.

    How long have you worked inOriame and at your currentposition?

    It feels like forever I am withOriame since 1996. But thenagain every day is new andcompletely different. Thereis no routine. In my currentposition, Marketing DirectorBaltics, I have beenaround 4years now.

    What do you enjoy the mostabout your job?

    As I mentioned earlier it isnever the same, never boring Oriame is a beauty companyselling directly and by sheernumber of catalogues (17per year), various campaigns,offers and new products (300-400 per year!) it is like an FMCG(fast moving consumer goods)brand multiplied by 10.Yet, most importantly,

    Oriame's mission brings thereason why I still do it andenjoy it - to fulll dreams -dreams of our customers,consultants, employees andmyself. It is the catalyst whichmakes me try to do it evenbetter each time and Mondaymornings are just great, since I

    know why I do it. And I am notthe only crazy person here.We all are passionate aboutfullling dreams.

    What kind of advice can yougive to a person starting workin a similar eld/position?

    Who am I to give anyone anyadvice? But ok if you wish -then one thing that I try tokeep in mind: be DARING,but also be DISCIPLINED. Forinstance, be daring about

    challenging the reality orbeing super-creative, but bealso disciplined in respectingpeople and meeting targets.But above all - love your workand love the people aroundyou, be they your colleagues,customers or suppliers.

    Do you consider your careerto be your main priority inlife at the moment?

    Not at all. Career had neverbeen in focus for me, at least,when I got the job. It just camealong. But my work is veryimportant and is a big partof my life. Today my biggestpriority is my family - my lovelywife and three kids.They do

    suffer occasionally from mypassion to do a very good jobthough... I promise I will domy best to balance work andprivate life better. I hope I willmanage, it is very importantas they are interconnected.

    Monday mornings are

    just great, since I knowwhy I do it.And I am not the onlycrazy person here. Weall are passionate aboutfullling dreams.

    How have your professionalgoals evolved since your timeat SSE Riga?

    Tenyears ago, when I wasapplying for KPMG, I thoughtthat I would work here forabout 3 years. I wanted toknow more about differentindustries, get to knowhow these industries work,compare different salaries etc. I wanted to gain experience.Working in audit gives yougreat background knowledgeof different industries, andan opportunity to establisha professional network.However, since I joined I have

    realized that KPMG is a great

    place where to work, so Iwanted to progress and buildmy career here.

    How did you end up workingin KPMG LLP in UK?

    Initially it was an 18 monthsecondment which I appliedfor. I ended up working therefor 6 years,which was notplanned. When I had justarrived, I wanted to get outof there after the 18 months.At rst I was so disappointedwith the place however,professionally it was agreatexperience.

    What do you consider yourgreatest achievement in youcarrier?

    KPMG has been my rst andonly employer. For me the

    biggest achievement is thepromotion to a managerposition in the UK, becauseI was a foreigner and not anative speaker. I achievedmuch more than other localswho were older than me.Moreover, the promotionprocess is slower in UK whencompared with the EasternEuropean countries.

    What is the workingenvironment like?

    It is fun and intense in the busyseason. It can be comparedwith the SSE Riga schedule. For

    example, when the FE exam

    industries work, compare differentsalaries etc.

    The hard work pays offin the end, especially ifyou are able to organiseyour work.

    is coming, it is intense butyou have a lot of fun also. Wehave social activities together,like running marathons. Insummer, employees are goingfor trainings and differentcourses. The hard work paysoff in the end, especially ifyou are able to organise yourwork. In summers we haveearly Fridays, where you canenjoy half of the day at thebeach, for example.

    If you had to switch careerand money was not an issue,what would you do?

    I would be a geography

    teacher, I loved geography atschool. As I like to travel andsee those amazing places, Iwould really want to tell thestudents the stories aboutthose places. But in Latvia it isnot a well-paid job.But if money was not issue,being a geography teachercould be a choice. Or maybeI would be a painter. In SSERiga I had my own exhibitionduring Je Joue week.

    Do you have any advice onestablishing networks?

    Your coursemates are yourprimary goal. Get to knowthem. After ve, ten yearsthey will be nancial directors,CEO-s, etc. They will be thekey contacts. People whoyou know now in SSE Rigawill grow together with youprofessionally.

    What advice can yougive to SSE Riga studentscontemplating their futureemployment?

    I would denitely suggesttrying an internationalexperience. Give it a go insome point in your career!Not necessarily right after thegraduation, but at some point.Live in a different country andappreciate your own countrywhen you come back, becausethis is what has happened tome. Now I want to see moreof my country and know moreabout it.
