BEREAN PARSONAGE FINISHED

Housing in the city of Lusaka is a majorproblem and when Berean Church of Christcame to the point of hiring their own preacherone of the first concerns was where he would

live. Upon trying to find housing and investigating rent costs it soon became evident thatthe only route was for the church to build aparsonage. The church began raising fundsfor the project in January 1988 and by Octoberhad enough money to begin building. In orderto save the church money and speed up theproject I supervised the buying ofsupplies andconstruction. After several unavoidable

delays and a very heavy rainy season thehouse was almost completed when theKanunshyas moved to Lusaka the last ofApril. We moved their belongings into thehouse, but they had to move to temporaryaccommodations for 10 days while thepainting and finishing touches werecompleted. Berean is very proud of theirbeautiful three bedroom parsonage which isnow complete and occupied by their own

preacher. We are proud of Berean for thisaccomplishment and their sacrificial givingwhich made it possible. The cost of buildingsupplies more than doubled during the timewe were building, but because of the giving ofyou American Christians we were able toassist the church with necessary funds tohave the house completely paid for. TheChristians at Berean say THANK YOU andGod Bless You for your help.

HOUSE BUILT FORMONGU CHURCH

The Imwiko Church in Mongu (300 mileswest of Lusaka) which was established by JimDavis has been experiencing difficulty withtheives and vandalism which hasnecessitated their spending money forsecurity guards. The best solution to thesituation was for them to have a small houseon the plot near the church where a membercould live and provide protection for theproperty. In January Dean startedpurchasing supplies needed to build a smallthree room house. When all supplies wereready March 11th, Chris Alexander took atruck load to Mongu and then came back toLusaka and got a builder, Dean and the rest ofthe supplies. The house is constructed on aconcrete slab. We had to haul boulders from30 miles away and have men break them intosmall stones for the concrete since Mongu issituated in an area where there is nothing butsand. The walls are of "TAPCEM" 2' x 8'slabs made of a mixture ofshredded wood andcement 3 inches thick, and placed betweengrooved concrete posts. It is plastered insideand out and is roofed with asbestos sheets.Five days after starting, the keys to the newhouse were handed to one of the elders and wewere on our way back to Lusaka. Needless tosay Chris and Dean felt good about thisaccomplishment since the companysupplying the TAPCEM and posts told themthat it took their men six weeks to construct asimilar house.

Setting the posts. Putting up the walls.

DAVID'S CORNER

David

Hello again. Things here are really hectictrying to get things packed away and to finishoff my final exams. Suddenly there is so muchto do and so little time before we head back tothe U.S.

School is going well. We have stoppedclasses and are just writing our finalexaminations. Although a lot of them areextremely difficult we can always find solacein the thought of completion. I still canscarcely believe that by the time you read thisI will have graduated.

Looking forward to coming back. See you inAugust.

Work crew and finished house.

May and June were extremely busy monthsas we tried to wind up more than 22 years ofwork with Zambia Christian Mission, pack upour belongings that couldn't be left behind, sold, or given away, throw away the rest of itand pack the memories into boxes, trunks, and bags and move back to the land we left in1967. Many of you have experienced thiswhen you've sold your home and moved intoan apartment, or changed jobs and moved toanother city, been transferred and had to findanother home. What to keep, what to throwaway, what to sell, what to give. One man'sjunk is often another man's treasure. Thebook of Ecclesiastes tells us there is "a time tokeep and a time to throw away" but it doesn'ttell us WHAT to keep and WHAT to throwaway. Those are the decisions we've tried tomake these past few weeks. And we all haveour own idea of what is treasure and what isjunk! "Are we taking this back?" or "Is thissomething we're selling?" "Who couldpossibly use this?" are all questions you couldhear around this house these past twomonths.

Most of the treasures that we will take withus are not the curios, baskets, etc. that we'veaccumulated over the years, but the treasuresin our hearts ofChristian friends, of souls wonto Christ, of churches who meet each Lord'sday to celebrate the resurrection, memoriesthat can't be boxed, taped, shipped, and thenunpacked in our new home. All of us have keptmomentos of the past, and we get misty eyedwhen we remember the time we received this

or that, when we see again the baby's firstblanket, or look through the photo albums ofJim, Cyndee and David as children, and nowthe albums of their children, and these thingswill all travel back with us. But the friendsand Christians here tug on our heart stringsas we say goodbye and leave them behind. How well we remember the heartache whenwe left family, friends and churches in 1967,and as we come full circle, the pain of leavingisn't any less. But we are confident that wehave treasures laid up in Heaven, we havefriends and brothers and sisters in Christ whoare now in Heaven that we didn't even know22 years ago. And as we say goodbye here inZambia, and hello again in the United States,we are confident that we are continuing in thework the Lord has called us to do, and willfinish the course that He has laid down for us.Thank you all who have helped and continueto help us to accomplish what He has given usto do.

Baptizing into Christ.

Dear Prayer Partners,

It's time once again for our Christmas letter. Our thoughts havebeen with you, and we want to send our love and best wishes as youcelebrate our Lord's birth.

We arrived in the USA in July and many of you haven't heard from ussince. We have been extremely busy since getting back. We hadvisits with children, grand-children, parents, brothers, sisters axulfriends before settling into a routine of travel to supportingchurches. We have enjoyed our visits with the churches and those ofyou whom we have seen so far. We are about halfway through ouritinerary and looking forward to seeing the rest of you soon. Wewill finish our reporting the end of April, when Dean will take uphis work with Johnson Bible College. His job will involve travel, representing J B C to churches all over the U.S. so it's not goingto be much different from what he is doing now. In January Judywill begin working in the business office at the college. We areliving in a lovely duplex on the campus of JBC in the foothills ofthe beautiful Smoky Mountains.

We want to express our deep appreciation to you for being our prayerpartners and enlisting your congregation in prayer for us and thework in Zambia. Your faithful prayers have made a mighty differencein our lives and the lives of the people of Zambia. Even though wewon't be returning to Zambia to live, if the Holy Spirit shouldbring us or the churches in Zambia to your mind, would you pleasepray for us? Thank You.

Jim, wife Cindy, sons Michael and David live in New Braunfels, *1^.Jim works in San Antonio, and they are active in the New BraunfelsChristian Church. We had a good visit with them in July, and were30 impressed with that growing congregation. Cyi^ee, husband John, son Joshua, and daughter Shandyn, live in Knoxville so we see themoften. Cyndee and John both work in Knoxville and are active in theWoodlawn Christian Church. David is a fresliman at East TN StateUniversity in Johnson City, TH, about 100 miles from here. He isvery active in ROTC, the Rangers, and is in the Color Guard, He is"tolerating" school for the sake of his chosen career in the Army.We miss him, but do get to see him fairly often since he is soclose. We really haven't had time to experience the "empty nest"syndrome since we have been gone almost every week since August.

We will have all the family with us for Christmas and we are reallyexcited about that. We wish each and every one of you a MerryChristmas and Happy New Year, with the birth of our Lord Jesus thecenter of your holiday season.

Prayerfully Yours,
