Facilities for aquatic competition are engineered to provide a highly controlled environment optimized to do one thing, increase performance of swimmers. This singular objective typically inhibits the facility from assimilating into its local community.

Synthesis

The project manifests itself as a new civic waterscape that synthesizes public & private with specificity & adaptability through 21st century water rituals.

Thesis

My proposal attempts to integrate the necessity for a high-performance competitive swimming pool with the desire for a multivalent facility that promotes community interaction.

I began this very personal project years ago as I started competitive swimming. Being an athlete who risked everything for success in swimming, I expected the same ambition from the swimming pools I raced in. While most competitive pools are designed for high-level performance, the surrounding context fails in various aspects when it comes to serving their intended purpose. These issues can be traced to three different design scales: object, building and urban scale. This project is divided into two sections, which include the three different design scales:

1. The Urban Planning is the component addressing the urban design of the surrounding context and its integration with the community. For the swimming facility to be truly successful it needs to have a purpose after a major event has concluded. This facility is designed to fulfill the extremely specific needs of a swimming competition, as well as adapt to continually serve a long-term purpose of integration with the surrounding community in order to maximize its potential.

2. The Swimming Facility deals with the actual architectural and technical design of the swimming facility by designing a community friendly and a high-performing swimming pool at Arizona State University.

The building and its programmatic design is the medium scale component and the small scale aspect is the object design that mainly benefits the speed aspect along with supporting additional functions of the swimming pool.

Project ApproachOnce I gathered all of the relevant and necessary information to design a successful swimming facility in an urban context, I combined this information into one document and designed a swimming pool for the new sport’s district at ASU; through this project, I have implemented my research

discoveries. These discoveries are based on relevant statistics amongst the swimming world. My research showed where architecture’s role needed to be applied in natatoriums today, with its direction toward the future.

High performance sports facilities are typically placed in isolation from the surrounding community. This project’s aim was to design the urban landscape so that the natatorium and community would flourish symbiotically. This was solved by discovery of existing latent conditions of the chosen site and squeezing every drop of potential out of these conditions. Athletic projects are successful when they are designed to integrate the building into the urban condition.

HAYDEN LIBRARY

During the Fall semester of 2014 my project was about improving Hayden Library and making it a place where people can easily connect. The library was missing a public open space that corresponds with the scale of our community. Instead of creating a new open space, I decided to join the plaza in front of the Memorial Union with the library. This space includes a stage that can be used for lectures, gathering, and performances.

My research led to the importance of a green space in a library. Hayden lawn is next to the building but that space falls short of being a successful green space. Instead of creating a brand new green space I added a green wall, filled the moat and added an entrance which is pointed towards the lawn.

Haustið 2014 hannaði ég nýtt útlit á bókasafnið hér í skólaþorpinu. Einnig þurfti ég að endurhanna bókasafnið að innan. Arizona State University er meðal stærstu háskóla í Bandaríkjunum með 76,000 nemendur.

The existing moat that surrounds Hayden Library has its entrance on the other side of Cady Mall. I conducted a survey where I asked students where Hayden Library was, and the majority of them would point towards the entrance but not the library itself, which illustrated Hayden Library needs to have an identity of a library. There needs to be a visual communication between the user of the library and pedestrians outside of the building. I designed pavilions that have different purposes and are a direct communication between the library and community.

niður tröppur hinum megin við veginn og fara i gegnum undirgöng undir veginum. Ég lagði fyrir könnun þar sem ég spurði hvar nemendur héldu að Hayden bókasafnið væri og flest allir bentu að innganginum. Bókasafnið sjálft hefur ekkert kennileiti. Það var því afar mikilvægt að skapa sjónræn samskipti milli notenda bókasafnsins og gangandi vegfaranda. Ég hannaði því skála sem nemendur geta setið í við lestur. Þessir skálar þrýstast út og vísa beint að garðinum. Með þessu er notagildi bókasafnsins augljóst.

SynthesisAdding green space to the building helps to restore the mind from the mental fatigue. Green spaces provide calming and inspiring environments and encourages learning. Important for libraries. An open space joins our big scaled community. Opening up the south side of the building will join the publiz plaza at the Memorial Union and the new Hayden Library.

ThesisAdd programs associated with the 21st century university library. Green spaces minimize the negative impact the building will have on the local environment. Dynamic open space joins our big scaled community. Function can be read from outside

AntithesisHayden Library is repetitious in its programatic design. Having only two major elements; book stacks and reading spaces. The bulding is also Isolated from the community and missing basic elements to be a 21st century library.

The proposal was entitled, Polycentric Ecological Development which was a well-crafted title for such an innovative project. This proposal pushed the limits and the expectations of what a development might look like in Goodyear, Arizona. The main factor that stands out was the limitation on vehicle access. The site was built around three main ideas or zones and while they individually had their own identities, they worked cohesively to strive towards one common goal. The implementation of the three zones is done so in a gradient manner. From the East to the West the site identity transforms into an economic urban hub for the site and all of Goodyear. The concept of nodes are identified through the three zones incorporated on the site.

Þetta verkefni fékk heitið, ,,Polycentric Ecological Development“ vegna þess að verkefnið varðar umhverfisskipulag fyrir borg með marga miðbæi sem hafa allir vistfræðilegan tilgang. Þetta var róttæk tillaga sem sýndi hvernig Goodyear borg í Arizona ríki í Bandaríkjunum myndi líta út eftir uppbyggingu. Helsti tilgangur þessarar hönnunar var takmörkun á bílanotkun. Borginni var skipt niður í þrjú svæði þar sem hvert svæði var með sitt eigið þema. Öll þessi svæði voru þrátt fyrir það með sameiginlegt markmið; að skapa umhverfisvæna borg. Svæðin umbreyttust frá því að vera sveitalegur bær í viðskiptatengda borg. Þessir staðir hafa því breyst í eftirsóknarverða staði með mismunandi tilgang.

While all three may be seen as vastly different, implemented in a gradient manner, they are respecting the qualities and values the site as a whole is challenged to uphold. This includes development, research, ethics, equity, learn, laugh, safety, health, stewardship, climate and water. The problems presented with this site were having vast open developable space with utilitarian intersects and a lack of identity. The goal is to prevent this from turning into the blasé suburban development that is already seen across Goodyear. The solution is the creation of nodes sprouting from the cross linear transportation line and the development of three distinct and identifiable zones ranging in density, purpose and character.

Þótt að þessi þrjú svæði séu mismunandi, þá er reynt að dreifa tíu miðstöðvum sem að tákna eitthvað tengt vistfræði. Umskipti þessara stöðva eru væg til þess að sýna greinileg umskipti borgarinnar frá náttúru í viðskipti. Þessar stöðvar (frá viðskipta yfir í náttúru umhverfi) fengu heitin uppbygging, rannsókn, siðfræði, fjármál, lærdómur, hlátur, öryggi, heilsa, ráðsmennska, loftslag og vatn. Vandamálið á þessu svæði var hvernig væri hægt að breyta svona stóru byggingarsvæði í stað með sterka sjálfsmynd. Markmiðið var að umbreyta þessari borg í eitthvað sérkennilegt en ekki í dæmigert bandarískt úthverfi.

ProblemVast ecological space has it’s identity and resilliency erased by typical suburban

developments.

SolutionCreate a series of nodes sprouting from a linear transportation line. Develope three

distinct districts ranging in density, purpose, and character.

WATER SQUARE

The Water Square serves as both a place for social interaction and a didactic venue for water education. This place takes full advantage of the nearby amphitheater and pedestrian bridge, linking the projects together via an active north-south corridor. The plaza serves as a multiuse event space ranging from low key seating areas during lunch time to a concert reception for Adele’s music tour. South of the plaza, three pools have been placed at specific elevations for the purpose of purifying the city’s water runoff before releasing it to the river.

THE FABRICA

Page 40: David Hildiberg Portfolio

40 The new college of architecture and construction got its name

Fabrica from word etymology. from fabrica (“workshop, craft, art, craft of metalwork, workmanship”) from faber (“skillful, artisan, forger, smith”) This was a group project throughout the semester. Our site analysis consisted of observations of the activity and movement associated with ASU’s block 12 surroundings. The focus was on the different modes of movement as well as modes of congregation. The evaluation of high-density circulation created the exercise of an abstract series of hubs. We used this tool as a means to direct our own design exploration. This circulation web became one of our design mechanisms to measure how the team member’s individual concepts came together.

Nýi háskólinn fyrir arkitektúr og byggingarfræði fékk nafnið Fabrikka frá enskri orðsifjafræði. frá fabrica (“verkstæði, iðn, list, málmiðn, framleiðsla”) frá faber (“kunnátta, falsari, smiður”). Á þessari önn vorum við í fjögurra manna hóp. Rannsókn okkar á svæðinu fyrir skólann snérist um að kanna hvernig fólk fór um svæðið og hvernig við gætum hannað það út frá því. Með því að kanna umferð manna komumst við að því hvar helsta umferðarteppan yrði og einnig hvaða leið fólk myndi velja sér í gegnum bygginguna. Við þróuðum þetta með því að skapa umferðarvef sem sýndi þessa umferð í gegnum svæðið. Seinna notuðum við byggingar frá sögulegum tímum og aðlöguðum þær að nútíma kröfum og einnig að umferðarvefnum.

Step 1First, we constructed a collage of existing buildings in

order to create a series of interior spaces.

Step 3Next, we used circulation to bind the two separate collages together into a single meaning. Through

collage, we translated the meaning of existing buildings into something new, a college of architecture

and construction.

Step 2Secondly, we applied the same method of collage to

create the exterior façade.
