Armistead Neighborhood Pruning and Removal Work Plan
Prepared by Brian Fenske, The Professional Tree Care Company
Revised September 17, 2013
This work plan is based on a start date of 9/23/2013, pending approval by the Presidio Trust. Work
will start behind building 1256 and work north towards Lincoln Blvd. Expected duration is
approximately two months.
Staffing
All work will be conducted by a single 5-person crew, working under the continuous direction of a certified
arborist (Brian Fenske, Craig Hancock, or Ruben Vargas from PTC). Traffic spotters or other additional ground
personnel will also be needed for some tree work.
General Tree Protection Notes
All limbs and trees will be lowered using rigging. No material will be dropped in this area. No hooks will be
used during pruning of trees to be preserved. In general, tree work equipment will be staged in paved areas
(wherever possible). When an outrigger from the crane or man-lift needs to be on unpaved areas, a mat or
plywood will be used to protect any roots in the unpaved area. If a vehicle needs to be staged in an unpaved
area, ground protection mats or plywood will be used to protect tree roots.
Work Near Armistead Power Lines
No power outages will be necessary. All staff has been trained in working near power lines and several of
the tree workers who will be on the crew are certified line clearance tree workers.
Equipment and Storage
Equipment will include a man-lift/bucket truck, a crane, a wood chipper, and other rigging and cutting
tools. All vehicles will be stored at night along Armistead in the dirt shoulder area opposite building
1255. This area will be fenced with temporary 6 foot fence panels along Armistead Road with
returns, but the area will not be entirely enclosed or locked. Panel fences will include “Danger – Keep

Out” signs or equivalent. No equipment will be parked in residents' spaces overnight. Residents' spaces will only be used during work hours and will be reserved in advance.
Work Hours and Progression
Work will start after 8:00 AM daily and be completed by 4:30 PM daily. All debris will be cleaned up
from the day’s work by the end of every day. Equipment will be returned to overnight staging area.
Table 1 gives the approximate dates of the work as well as staging requirements (traffic control,
parking spaces, equipment, staffing, and utilities). Tree numbers ending with an “R” are to be
removed. The tree numbers without an “R” will only be pruned. Stumps will be left in place due to
their close proximity to preserved trees. The general progression of work will be as follows, but may
change based on the weather and the conditions encountered in the field.
Starting behind building 1256 the 5-person crew will work its way north towards Lincoln Blvd.
It will take approximately two weeks to get to the pathway that goes between buildings 1253
and 1251 (10/04/13).
We will continue working on the trees in front of 1251 for the next week.
After all of this work is complete, we will work down the pathway between 1253 and 1251
towards Ramsel Court and then behind building 1251. This work will take two weeks to
complete (10/22/13).
We will then start the work over buildings 1235 and 1236, this work will take approximately 3
days to complete.
We will then work our way out of Ramsel Court toward Armistead working in front of
buildings 1234 and 1211. This work should be completed by 10/29/13.
After this work is completed we will be working on the side of 1211, behind 1211 and behind
1234. This work should be less disruptive to traffic once the crew is completed on the side of
1211.
After the mitigation pruning work is performed, PTC will start the removals of selected trees on the
west side of Armistead. This work should take approximately two weeks. All work by PTC is expected
to be complete by mid- to late-November.

Protection of Residents and Visitors to the Area During Tree Work
PTC will use 6 orange plastic barriers (k-rail shaped “water wall” barriers) to delineate the work area.
“Keep Out” signs indicating that dangerous tree work is occurring in the trees above will be attached
to the barriers. Residents need to follow signage and instructions from tree workers in order to
ensure their personal safety during tree work. These barriers will also be used to close a portion of
the circle behind Ramsel court for staging cranes and lifts. A ground spotter will be on site at all times
to ensure that no members of the public approach or enter the work area.
Wood Chipping
A wood chipper will be required to process cut branches and trees for off-site disposal. The chipper
will be placed in each staging area as far away from the residences as possible. The chipper will be
oriented so that chipped wood will be directed away from the residences.
Traffic Control
When work is occurring over roadways, traffic controls will be used to ensure no vehicles enter tree
work areas. Flaggers will be used for work along Armistead and there may be brief periods when the
roadway is temporarily closed. For work along Ramsel Court, one side of the circular driveway will be
closed with plastic barricades
Parking Closures
We will work in close coordination with the Trust for any temporary use of reserved parking spaces.
Notification for reserved spaces will be conducted by the Trust and John Stewart Company in consultation with
PTC. Every attempt will be made to give the Trust at least one week’s notice of any reserved spaces needed
for staging.
Temporary No Parking signs will be used for non-reserved spaces. Every attempt will be made to install these
signs at least 3 work days before the space is needed.
