Hello families,

As we approach the end of term two, I would like to reflect on the term that has been. COVID19 certainly presented us all with lots of changes, lots of anxiety and lots of new ways of working. Everyone worked together to ensure that we were able to provide the best possible educational experiences for the students in this very challenging time! Parents became the teachers during the Learn from Home stage and staff had to rewrite the programs on two occasions! To say that I am proud of our students, our staff and our parents is an understatement!

As we go on holidays, please remember the social distancing rules and continue to practice high levels of hygiene! Upon return to school, we will continue with the below practices and will review these as restrictions across the state are eased:

All teachers, school staff, parents and students must stay at home if they are sick! If your child becomes sick during the day, please collect them straight away upon receiving a call.

Teachers and school staff must access the school for their work. They must maintain social distancing with all other adults at the school.

Parents are strongly encouraged to drop off their children at the gate and collect their children at the gate

Parents of young children are permitted to take their children to their class, or designated waiting area in the morning, then leave the school grounds straight away.

Parents are not permitted to congregate in the school grounds before school, or in the after-noon waiting for the bell to go.

All classrooms and learning spaces have been equipped with hand sanitiser, soap and paper towel. Staff and students must practice safe personal hygiene at all times. Teachers will be helping students learn this.

Additional cleaning is conducted by cleaners during school hours. This includes high frequency surfaces like door knobs, hand rails and drink taps.

Big Breakfast postponed! As a result of continuing restrictions, the Big Breakfast for term 3 is post-poned. If restrictions are lifted, I will reschedule for later in the term.

NAIDOC Week postponed until last week of term 3! – The NAIDOC celebrations will now be held in the last week of term 3. We are hoping that restrictions for adults meeting will be lifted early in term 3 to allow the School Cultural Advisory Group to meet to assist in planning the activities of this week. More information next term!

On the 4 June, Cairns West State School recognised Tonga Independence Day.

This celebration was particularly significant for the Tongan people in 2020 as this year signified the 50th year of being an independent nation after being part of the United Kingdom.

Hi, my name is Candida, I am currently an Engagement Referral Practitioner for the Family and Child Connect Program with Act for Kids Cairns.

My hobbies and interests include Auslan, play-ing musical instruments, swimming, fishing, camping and four wheel driving. My family heritage is Torres Strait Islander, Aboriginal, South Sea Islander, Phillipine and I was born and raised in Brisbane.

I am also a Small Business Owner, Musician and I have worked in various roles in Community Services and Education sector for approximately 12 years in government and non-government organisations.

Act for Kids gives me the opportunity to make a positive impact on society and support and empower children and families.

I love my job and am proud to be a member of the Act for Kids Team because everyone shares the same vision and is dedicated to the mission of improving the lives of children and families.

Cairns in 2016 for the opportunity to work with Act for

Kids.

Engagement Referral Practitioners for

Family and Child Connect at Cairns West

Hi, my name is Shannon - I love to travel the world, play sports, go fishing and camping, watch Cowboys games and spend time with my dog Odin and my husband.

I am originally born and raised in Townsville and only moved to Cairns two years ago. I am a proud Torres Strait Islander woman. My father’s side of the family is from Saibai, Darnley and Yorke Island in the Torres Strait Islands and my mother’s side is from Germany and Australia. In

Townsville, I worked at Shalom Christian College supporting Indigenous students from all over Australia. I also worked at another private school, worked in youth work and disability care for children and youth.

I am currently an Engagement Referral Practitioner for the Family and Child Con-nect Program with Act for Kids in Cairns. I love working for Act for Kids and being a part of the organisation! I am passionate about supporting families to reach the best outcomes for themselves and their little ones. I am also passionate about working within the Cairns community to make sure children live a happy and healthy life.
