BACKGROUND

The Regional Logistics Expo is an annual Freight Logistics event hosted by the Uganda Freight Forwarders Association in Partnership with the National Logistics Platform and the Ministry of Works and Transport. The event offers a unique opportunity for participants to meet, discuss and align their views on what’s happening in the region and see how best to strategise as well as position their businesses and organisations to meet the dynamic range industry demanding.

The current business and policy demands are significantly impacting on the Transport and Logistics industry. So, how do we position our businesses to proactively deal with these industry dynamics?

Uganda is a major transit route for goods destined for the Great Lakes region. However, we are not responding to this competitive advantage.Logistics has assumed a very prominent role as it provides the backbone of economic growth in the region which facilitates trade and also helps tap into available opportunities of booming economies in the neighbouring countries.

There are many ways through which the industry must adapt to address these challenges and opportunities. Some of which include professionalism, self-regulation, embracing new technologies among others.

However, there are several challenges that ought to be addressed to foster growth of the industry such as:-

i. Fragamentation of the Industry; The industry is highly fragmented at both enterprise and regulatory levels. This has resulted into the sector being disjointed with limited information sharing. The fragmentation has also created significant difficulties in quantifying those involved in the industry.

ii. Un-harmonized national Policy, legislation and regulatory challenges The Logistics industry is also faced with a number of policy, legislation and regulatory challenges that hinder the competitiveness of Ugandan Logistics Company. These include Vehicle axle load control limits, vehicle dimensions and numbers of axle limits, vehicle operating costs, poor driving skills for heavy goods vehicle (HGV), environment, health and safety (EHS) skills, among others. These require not only capacity building of the private sector to comply with the regulations, but also continuous advocacy to ensure efficiency in administration of the regulations including corruption.

iii. Capacity gaps; The private sector logistics strategy 2017 reported a number of capacity challenges that require addressing to enhance competitiveness of the industry. these include; a) Order cycle time, b) Stock unavailability, c) Order size constraints, d) Ordering inconvenience, e) Delivery unreliability, f) Poor documentation quality, among others.

iv Inadequate financing modules; There are not many banks that understand logistics companies and their operations at large. This has made it hard for freight logistics operators to access finance and are willing to finance them to purchase equipment.
