4. CNN on FPGA (HUB AP – ID - Viti)
Products
List of products or product groups interested by this technology
All the high end products of the new Matrix family and, in general, all the new products that will be based on Intel (Altera) SoC.
Need
Description of needs that this technology may solve.
Deep learning is revolutionizing many areas of machine vision.
From a high level point of view, working with deep neural networks is a two-stage process. First, a neural network is trained: its
parameters are determined using labeled examples of inputs and desired outputs. Then, the network is deployed to run inference,
using its previously trained parameters to classify, recognize and process unknown inputs.
The Intel DLIA is a PCIe board designed to accelerate the inference workloads. In fact, it uses a convolutional neural network
implemented on an Intel FPGA (this product will be available in 2017).
In addition, Intel will provide not only the HW but also the SW toolchain, and it will be reusable with the Intel SoCs (while Arria 10
and Stratix 10 will be fully supported, there are still some doubts about Cyclone 5 and we are waiting for Intel to confirm it).
Proposal
If available, description of possible solutions.
See the previous point.
Development strategy
Proposed strategy: internal development, IpTech development, consultant, external company,…
As Machine Vision BU is proposing for the AIDA project, I suggest to develop a demo based on the DLIA architecture. This will allow
us not only to learn how to use Intel FPGAs in order to accelerate the inference workload, but also to evaluate this HW&SW
solution and to validate it for future developments on our high end embedded cameras.
5. HDR and Gamma Correction (HUB AP – ID – Viti)
Products
List of products or product groups interested by this technology
All the products that have an image sensor with more than 8-bit per pixel.
Need
Description of needs that this technology may solve.
Nowadays it is common to find image sensors that acquire images with more than 8 bits per pixel, while our image processing
algorithms are 8-bit based. For this reason, we are currently accepting only the 8 most significant bits and discarding the extra bits,
so we are actually loosing information.
This waste of information could be avoided and the extra bits could be used in order to enhance the acquired images. In particular,
HDR and Gamma Correction are two fields that deserves to be explored.
Proposal
If available, description of possible solutions.
See previous point.
Development strategy
Proposed strategy: internal development, IpTech development, consultant, external company,…
We should study the state of the art and define the algorithm that best suits to our needs.
It is noteworthy that the algorithm should be chosen in order to facilitate an FPGA implementation: in fact this approach could
reduce (near to zero) the computational overload for the microprocessor.
Furthermore, another good criteria for the algorithm choosing should be to run VL on the original images and on the enhanced
ones, in order to compare the decoding performances.
6. Image Processing on FPGA (HUB AP – ID – Viti)
Products
List of products or product groups interested by this technology
All the new Matrix family, all the new Machine Vision cameras based on the new Matrix HW, the SPH and the new Data VS.
Need
Description of needs that this technology may solve.
Image processing filters are extremely time consuming if performed by the SW.
When there is an FPGA between the image sensor and the microprocessor video data port, and when the FPGA has some available
logic elements, then the FPGA could implement the requested image processing filters and perform the desired image processing
on-the-fly. It means that the FPGA processes the acquired images during the acquisition, with no computational overload for the
microprocessor that runs the application.
What just said takes place in all the products listed above, except in the SPH case. In fact, this product is currently going to use the
Anafocus Eye-RIS image sensor who can execute some image processing onboard and doesn’t need an FPGA. However, choosing
this component could be a bit risky and a backup implementation based on FPGA (affirmed on the market, easy to find, multi-
vendor, etc.) could be very useful for our company.
Proposal
If available, description of possible solutions.
See previous point.
Development strategy
Proposed strategy: internal development, IpTech development, consultant, external company,…
1) Write down a list of the needed image processing filters (the list present on the Anafocus Eye-RIS user guide could be a really
good starting point).
2) Develop a C/C++ implementation of each image processing filter (it will be used as a reference during the test phase of the VHDL
IPs).
3) Develop the VHDL implementation of each image processing filter (I’ve already developed some of them and they need only a
review in order to optimize the FPGA resource utilization).
All the previous steps could be assigned to a thesis student or to an intern, that would be only supported by me (or by someone
who have basic skills in image processing and in FPGA design).
7. Consensus-based data security for networked devices (HUB AP – ID +
IPTech – Cumoli/Cilli + D’Ercoli)
1. Tipologia di corso di laurea richiesto: Ingegneria Informatica, Telecomunicazioni, Informatica 2. Titolo della tesi: Consensus-based data security for networked devices 3. Tipologia di tesi: implementativa/sperimentale 4. Cosa richiesto come output: Fattibilità e prototipazione sui nostri device 5. Stima impegno richiesto: 6-9 mesi 6.
e/o brevetto): Patent filed A method to ensure data integrity (reliability) and availability to networked devices (e.g. imagers in
industrial sensor network, healthcare network, etc.). It is based on a purely peer-to-peer
consensus-based protocol and the key point is that “trust” between data produced by nodes of the
network is achieved without the need for any trusted third party server (as with a Public Key
Infrastructure approach).
We are guaranteed that any data produced from any device in the network have not been
corrupted (intentionally or not), and that any data has been produced by a reliable data source (not
by external, malicious devices).
Robustness in terms of fault tolerance can be achieved because, even if some device is faulted or
its network connection is not always on, data are still available from other devices.
Safety for the human beings involved (if any) is achieved: only reliable data from sensor can ensure
mistake-proof decisions in case of unintentional tampering or cyberattacks.
The goal is enabling new business applications for Datalogic, mainly the product Servitization in
identification, machine vision and healthcare, by combining a distributed ledger (better than the
BLOCKCHAIN one) with a shared trusted-criterion and consensus messages into a simple P2P
network protocol.
8. Cybersecurity method based on a peer-to-peer protocol for public key
exchange aimed to prevent man-in-the-middle attacks in an IoT
network (HUB AP – ID + IPTech – Cumoli/Cilli + D’Ercoli)
1. Tipologia di corso di laurea richiesto: Ingegneria Informatica, Telecomunicazioni, Informatica 2. Titolo della tesi: Cybersecurity method based on a peer-to-peer protocol for public key
exchange aimed to prevent man-in-the-middle attacks in an IoT network 3. Tipologia di tesi: implementativa/sperimentale 4. Cosa richiesto come output: Fattibilità e prototipazione sui nostri device 5. Stima impegno richiesto: 6-9 mesi 6.
e/o brevetto): Patent filed A pure peer-to-peer communication protocol (no central server needed) designed to enable the
safe exchange of public cryptographic keys in an unsecure IoT environment (e.g. sensor networks,
automation LANs, shop floor) without using a Public Key Infrastructure (PKI).
Such an environment, often equipped with network-connected (e.g. Ethernet or wireless with
TCP/IP) sensors and actuators (called nodes), should always be considered unsecure because an
eavesdropper (someone who is able to intercept messages on the channel) may always intrude in
the initial exchange of cryptographic keys between nodes to deceive the two sides of the
communication by making them to believe that they exchanged their respective public keys when
they received the keys prepared by the eavesdropper (man-in-the-middle-attack, MITM).
When this type of attack is successful, communication security is totally compromised from the
point of view of privacy, authentication and (even worst) also availability of the whole system: data
from sensors and actuators could be corrupted.
The proposed data-security method is simple and suited for IoT environments where Datalogic
products (from mobile devices to small smart sensors) will be deployed in the near future.
9. Method for invisible and robust digital image watermarking when
coded information is available (HUB AP – ID + IPTech – Cumoli/Cilli +
D’Ercoli)
1. Tipologia di corso di laurea richiesto: Ingegneria Informatica, Telecomunicazioni, Informatica 2. Titolo della tesi: Method for invisible and robust digital image watermarking when coded
information is available 3. Tipologia di tesi: implementativa/sperimentale 4. Cosa richiesto come output: Fattibilità e prototipazione sui nostri device 5. Stima impegno richiesto: 6-9 mesi 6.
e/o brevetto): Patent filed A method for copyright protection that takes advantage of an usually neglected aspect of digital
image watermarking when applied to the automatic identification (AutoID) field.
That is, the simultaneous presence of coded information (barcode, OCR, etc.) with not-coded one in
the same image, as typically happens in AutoID applications (shop, warehouse, couriers, factory)
where one or more “indicia” are typically mixed within a background of other objects, pattern or
textures that are of no interest.
More precisely, having the ability to automatically distinguish (by reading the related identification
data) the regions of the image with some “coded content”, it is possible to use that content to
watermark also the remaining region which have no coded content, while some other information
can be also extracted from the remaining region to watermark the region with coded content. This
introduces a special “cross dependence” on information that will allow for increased robustness of
invisible watermarking (i.e. difficult for an attacker to break) while at the same time makes
available a mechanism capable to detect if (and where in the image) a fraudulent attack has
occurred.
A robust, invisible and proprietary method for real-time digital watermarking of images could be a
great value for Datalogic customers because, while digital images are easy to transfer and store,
they are also easy to copy and redistribute over a communication network. Hence, the need to
protect the copyright (it has to be considered that digital signatures and similar techniques could
not be the best choice to achieve the goal).

applicativo.
11. Linux devices doctor (HUB AP – ID – Cilli) 1. Tipologia di corso di laurea richiesto: Ingegneria Informatica & affini 2. Titolo della tesi: Linux device doctor 3. Tipologia di tesi: ricerca + sperimentale 4. Cosa richiesto come output: Analisi, Design, fattibilità e prototipazione sui nostri device 5. Stima impegno richiesto: Medio 6 mesi 6.
brevetto):
In complex projects the need of automatic code generation often arises: pre-build or post-build
generation of additional source and helper files.
Real-world example: automatic creation of protocol manifests for efficient inter-device communication.
The Clang compiler suite (clang.llvm.org) offers a C++ AST parser with C++ API which can be used to
change the content of source files or to generate new code based on other valid C++ source code.

14. Alternative Communication Framework for device interoperability
(HUB AP – ID – Cilli-Franzoni-Rocchini) 7. Tipologia di corso di laurea richiesto: Ingegneria Informatica & affini 8. Titolo della tesi: Alternative Communication Framework for device interoperability 9. Tipologia di tesi: ricerca + design 10. Cosa richiesto come output: Analisi, Design, fattibilità 11. Stima impegno richiesto: Medio-Elevato 6-9 mesi 12.
Move from “service” to “data”
Every data is on Data Grid (devices flood data to Data Grid)
See Apache Ignite in Technologies section
Every node can produce data, but it is transferred only if another node need it
Think to how the cache/memory works
Split application in a device specific part and an application part
Split depends by our ideas and our infrastructure (net. bandwidth is a strong constraint)
“Real time” data is assured by distributed synchronization
See Apache ZooKeeper in Technologies section
Data elaboration could be performed by any node because information is shared
Load balancing
“Fail safe” applications
Move configuration from device to Data Grid
Of course we continue to configure the single device
We configure also the whole application on Data Grid
All the particular configurations are available on Data Grid
