Cinematic Sound Design.
Thank you for purchasing Darkness: Cinematic Sound
Design. All of the sound design material has come from
real sources. No synths were used in any of this
material. The drones, rhythmic loops, soundscapes and
effects on DARKNESS were derived from recordings ofthings like metal bridges, cables, dumpsters, machines,
and metal-stringed instruments such as waterphones,
detuned autoharps, and one very old and beat up piano
harp. The source recordings were then subjected to a
battery of plug-ins and effects, loaded into samplers, and
then played to create the finished loops and atmospheres.
The samples can be used in standard wav format or takeadvantage of our custom kontakt interface for our kontakt
users. The kontakt format includes the ability to edit and
tweak loops and to easily add effects to further takes
these samples to new and original places.

LOOP FX CONTDarkness: Cinematic Sound Design/
The most extensive editing can be done in the sliced loop patches. Each loop is
given its own patch with an interface that allows for extensive loop manipulation.
Adjustments to volume, pitch, play back direction, attack, decay, cutoff, and resonance
can all be applied to each slice of the loop by first selecting the parameter you want to
effect at the top and then clicking within each slice to edit that parameter.
LOOP FX
KEY TERMS
Volume- By default the volume is set to 100% for each slice. To make adjustments,
click on a slice then drag down to decrease the volume of that slice.
Pitch- Pitch can be adjusted up to 12 positive or negative semitones. To make
adjustments, click on the white horizontal line in the center of a slice, then drag up or
down.
Reverse- To reverse a slice, click on the bottom, then drag up.
Attack- Attack specifies the time it will take the slice to reach its maximum level when
the MIDI note is received. To add a longer attack time, click on a slice then drag up.
Cutoff - Cutoff by default is set to 100%. To change the cutoff frequency, click on a
slice, then drag down.
Resonance- Resonance adjusts the emphasis of the frequency area around the Cutoff
frequency. To change the amount of resonance, click on a slice, then drag up.
If after making changes, you decide you would like to return to the default settings,
instead of re-loading the patch, click on the edit button to the left of the waveform
display and choose Reset to Default. This will reset all changes made.
KEY TERMS CONTD
There are a couple of useful combination key stroke and mouse clicks that can make
editing slices a little easier. Option+command+click (Mac) or Control+Alt+Click (PC)
resets slice parameters to zero. Holding down those keys and dragging up or down
allows all slices to be edited at the same time. To draw a line across multiple slices
press the Option/Alt key, click on a slice as your start point for the line. Next, release
ONLY the mouse button, while still holding the Option/Alt key, click on the slice that
youd like to draw the line to and drag up or down to create the line.
There are two keyswitches to change how the loop will playback. The mode is changed
by one of the two key switches starting at C0.
C0 (Red Key)- Play loop forward
D0 (Blue Key)- Play loop backward
In the lower right hand corner, there are two buttons: Input Q and One Shot.
Input Q- Offsets loop playback by the selected value.
One Shot When the One Shot button is active, each slice will only play the sound
contained in that slice. When One Shot mode is not active, the remainder of the loop
will continue playing from the slice that was triggered. (Note: When one-shot mode
is active the loop can still be played in its entirety by playing C0.
Presets - There is a knob at the lower right hand corner called presets. This can be
used to create multiple edits of the same loop
Midi Files - A midi file of the loop can be dragged from the interface to your track by
using the icon in the upper right hand corner of the loop waveform display. These can
be very helpful to completely rearrange the loop, quantize, or to simply make minor
changes to the various slices of the loop.
