PCs need to assist/escort Bornis/Pendur to the emporium of merchant House Wavir in Iron Square. After the meeting, Pendir will order the PCs to wait while he concludes his own private business (a meeting of nobles in Shadow Square). He will not return.

The PCs prepare for their visit to Tyr. Find out what clothes they wear (tunics, skirts, armor etc) and what else they take (including weapons, supplies, water and food). They will probably have no (the slaves) to little (the employees) money.

Leave the Varil estate an hour after dawn (about 6.30am-still cool, probably cloaked); many fields have been left fallow because King Kalak has increased the number of slaves laboring on the construction of the ziggurat. Walk west towards Tyr and join the main road leading to the Caravan Gate.

Recap on AthasStop on the road to look back at the sunrise (about 7.30am-describe the great dark sun

and the rise in temperature) and join a queue waiting to enter Tyr (describe the Caravan Gate CSoT p22). Bornis shows the house Varil seal and bribes the templar to enter.

The streets of Tyr have become a little more dangerous of late because of King Kalak’s increased demands on his templars to complete the ziggurat’s construction.

Bornis of VarilSenator Bornis is the head of the noble house Varil, a minor power in Tyrian politics.

In his mid sixties, he looks an aged man, with worn brown skin and a bald pate, ringed by a length of long white hair falling from the back of his head to his shoulders. He shows compassion and leniency to his slaves, treating them fairly.

The Varil house was not always considered a minor family. When Bornis was a boy, his outspoken father, Anethus, was found murdered after attempting to veto one of Kalak’s laws. As a result the Varil household suffered dearly and Bornis inherited a much diminished estate at the hands of the King’s templars. Regardless he is well respected by his peers as is the memory of his father. He is outraged and concerned with Kalak’s recent procurement of a third of his male slaves and has agreed to meet with a group of likeminded nobles in Shadow Square to discuss their options.
