An infectious material transported in a way that may after contact cause permanent physical disability, mortal danger or fatal diseases to humans or animals.

Examples of materials fulfilling these criteria can be found e.g. in table 3.6 D of the IATA code.*

Infectious substances endangering humans or animals are categorized under UN 2814.

Infectious substances endangering only animals are categorized under UN 2900.

We transport approximately 6,400 samples all over Europe and worldwide.Accompanied transport possible!

The proper shipping designation for UN 3373 is Biological Substance Category B

Medical or clinical waste containing Category B infectious substances must be allocated to UN 3291. We are authorized to conduct cross-border transport of these materials.

Substances which do not contain infectious materials or are not likely to cause illness to humans or animals are not subject to these regulations, unless they fulfil criteria to be included in another classification.

Substances which contain micro-organisms not pathogenic for humans and animals are not subject to these regulations, unless they fulfil criteria to be included in another clas-sification.

Substances in a form that neutralise or deactivate possibly existent pathogens, thus po-sing no more health risk, are not subject to these regulations, unless they fulfil criteria to be included in another classification.


The determination of the current hazard and if a substance has to be shipped as an infectious material or as a diagnostic sample, is based on:

> Risk ascertained in a lab> Purpose of the shipment> Perceived risks compared to scientific and empiric proof

This results in a regulation which entails a great number of checks which are out of pro-portion compared to the actual risks and may subsequently cause unnecessary strain on health prevention, diagnoses, methods of treatment and emerging diseases.

As of 1st January 2005 risk groups are no longer applicable.Categories and applicable packaging instructions changed as follows:

Category A:

Behaviour in an emergency with infectious substances of Categories A and B:

> Isolate the complete infected area in all directions> Keep unauthorised staff away from infected area> Ascertain the exact designation of the substance and inform the appropriate authorities> The substance may not be touched or crossed> Defective cases or spilled - off material may not be touched without proper protective clothing> Contact with glass or sharp - edged objects which could cause cuts thus risking release of material must be avoided

CAUTION!

> Rescued persons might be a source of pollution.> Call for emergency doctor / ambulance AT ONCE> Remove and isolate contaminated clothes and shoes> In case of contact with a substance, rinse skin or eyes with running water for at least twenty minutes> Occurrence of various side-effects may be delayed (after inhalation, swallowing or skin contact)> For further help, contact the appropriate health office> Make sure that medical staff can protect themselves from the substances> Isolate contaminated persons in safe surroundings
