Dallas County Health and Hu-man Services opened a new pub-lic health clinic for children in East Dallas Jan. 11.

The official grand opening cer-emony held by DCHHS officials was attended by Dallas County Commissioner Mike Cantrell, of-ficials from Texas Department of State Health Services and other in-vited guests.

A small reception followed a ribbon-cutting ceremony that morning.

Immunizations and well-child services will be offered at the clinic for a flat fee of $10 for the first vis-it and $5 for any subsequent visits. Services are free for patients with valid Medicaid cards.

Appointments aren’t necessary for immunizations, but patients will have to have an appointment for individual health checks.

Physical exams, developmental screening, hearing and vision test-ing, and Tuberculosis testing are included in the well-child servic-es offered on-site. Exams are $5

per child or free for Medicaid card-holders.

“We’re excited to reopen this former city clinic under the management and operation of DCHHS,” Director Zachary Thompson said opening day.

Prior to the clinic’s re-opening, the city of Dallas operated a health clinic at the same location. Due to a reduction in funding for health services, the city-run clinic was closed in September 2009.

Suggested sites for infant immunizations:

n The deltoid muscle is an option for intramuscular injections in children 18 months and older with adequate muscle mass.

n Subcutaneous injections can also be given in the thigh.

n Injection sites should be separated by one inch.

n Intramuscular injections are not recommended in an infant’s arms.
