Note From President, Sandi Irish

This is my last note as your chair. It really has been a quick two years. I can tell

you this now: at the June meeting two years ago, someone came up to me and

whispered in my ear, "only 11 more to go!" I got a good chuckle, then and now!

Elections will be held at our May meeting. We are looking for a few positions:

Vice Chair, Newsletter Editor, and Community Service are the main ones. Terms

are for one year. Vice Chair is expected to work along with Chair this year, and

then become Chair the following year. Any of these can be done by two people,

and chairing is a great way to get to know everyone! None are hard to do, and we

have such a wonderful, supportive group; everyone is here to help. Please

consider taking a spot if you have never been involved on the board.

Thanks for letting me serve you!

What Are You Craving? – by Susan Skoog

Start going through your recipes for the long lost "dish" that you are CRAVING

to make!! Our July meeting will be a picnic at "Central Park" pavilion. No sign-

up list will be circulated; you can bring what you are CRAVING to share at the

picnic. We will provide plates and waters.

The pavilion is located at 1501 Central Parkway, on the right as you turn onto

Central Parkway from Pilot Knob, heading west as you go to the Community

Center for our meetings. Watch for the signs. Start time is EARLIER -- 6:30pm.

Start thinking of what you are CRAVING!!!

April Meeting Summary and Show Report – Sunny Kline

The Quilt Show was absolutely beautiful! We had approximately 125 quilts this year, in a variety of quilting

styles from very traditional to very art-quilty! Our members have obviously been taking classes and working on

their own to increase their skills, step out of the box, and create stunning work! Representatives from three of

our challenges were on exhibit… “Ugly Fat Quarter”, “Crayon Challenge”, and “Fabric Purchased at the Show

Boutique” Challenge. The show goes until May 6, so be sure to come by to see everything before it is taken

down on May 7, and vote for your favorite for Viewers’ Choice.

Don’t forget to visit this year’s boutique, and bid on one of the silent auction quilts! You might want to pick up

a new book or pattern… we are thinking of a challenge to make something from a book or pattern you’ve gotten

from the boutique, to be exhibited at next year’s show.

Our guest speaker, Gudrun Erla, was a smashing success! Another creative and talented designer and quilter

who has written several books using strips for quilting, quilt-as-you-go techniques, and much more. See photos!

Of course, the show is our biggest challenge of the year, but there’s no time to rest! The May meeting will be

the show summary and elections. Then we move on to a whole new set of programs, activities, challenges, and

social gatherings to enjoy! May elections will bring us a new Board, with lots of enthusiasm and surprises in

store for us all.

We want to hear from everyone about where you want the Guild to go….Do you want more…

Speakers/ lectures (such as we had Cherrywood fabrics and Amanda Jean Nyberg)

Trunk Shows, to see more quilts

Mini-Workshops to learn basic skills, (30 – 60 minutes, at the meetings)

Open sewing meetings (gather to talk, socialize and work on our own projects)

Mystery quilts or Quilt of the Month projects, led by a member

Longer workshops, 4 – 6 hours, on a pattern or project, led by a member

Longer workshops, half day or full day, where we would hire a professional instructor

We also invite and welcome further participation from members… get more involved, have more fun, and get to

know your fellow guild members! Here are some things you can do….

1. Bring show and tell items to share

2. Step up to be a Board member or be on the show committee for next year… most of the jobs only

require a couple hours a month

3. Lead a community service project or “sewing day”

4. If you have a technique or pattern you can teach, volunteer to do a workshop

5. Bring an interested friend/guest to the meetings so we can build our membership

6. Submit an interesting tidbit to the newsletter

Offering to Teach – by Beth Kobliska

I am offering to teach two classes to DCSQ members.

T-shirt Quilts: Having made hundreds of t-shirt quilts for customers, I’d like to share what I have learned with

my fellow quilters. I will cover some basics, pattern designs I use, including my “Puzzle” quilts and my “Mixed

Sashed” layouts, and tips to avoid problems with stretch, tucks, and bulk. T-shirt quilts don’t have to include

just t-shirts – I’ve included sports jerseys, baby clothes, neckties, dress shirts, photos printed on fabric, socks,

boxers, swimsuits, baby blankets, competition ribbons, and even medals. Duration is about 4 or 5 hours, depending

on interest.

Electric Quilt Software: EQ is powerful, versatile and easy to use quilt design software. I’ve been using it for

8 years, and love it. I will cover the basics of horizontal set, diagonal set, row-by-row layouts and custom sets.

I’ll also cover borders, designing pieced blocks, and the EQ libraries of blocks, fabrics, quilt layouts. If you

have EQ, this will be a hands-on class. Quilters who do not have EQ, but want see how it works before deciding

to get it, are also welcome. If there’s interest I can also include tips on designing t-shirt quilts using custom

settings. Duration is about 4 or 5 hours, depending on interest.

Both classes are free to DCSQ members. Times and places will be arranged, depending on interest. Please

contact Beth Kobliska if interested.

Web Site Tip – by Sunny Kline

http://quiltersresources.net is a website that lists quilt shows and other events, shops, museums, guilds, and

other stuff for quilters. Check it out, especially if you are planning to be traveling around and have time to visit

a museum, quilt shop, or be a visitor at another guild!

A Bittersweet Note, Revised – by Carol Egan

Kathy Lindstrom accepted a job offer in Denver, CO – but the job fell through, and she will stay in Minnesota!

This means she will stay on as next year’s Chair of our guild. “Welcome back,” Kathy! We are sorry your

dream fizzled, but so happy you will stay on and keep guiding us with your enthusiasm through the next year.

Let’s show Kathy our support by stepping up to fill the vacant board positions. To get your name in the running,

please contact Sandi Irish. See her contact info in the Board list on page 7.
