Dairy Knowledge at your fingertips Volume 7 – 4th Edition- Winter 2012 SUMMARY HOW DO THE FORAGE YIELDS ON MY FARM COMPARE… 2 THE FORAGE CHALLENGE 3 DAIRY BOVINE SYMPOSIUM 6 Join us in taking up the forage challenge! When the time comes to choose the topic of the next training course every year, there’s no shortage of ideas. This year again we had a long list of very relevant subjects. We sett- led on the topic of forages. Why? Because it was becoming obvious that we needed to support the Quebec Forage Council (CQPF 1 ) in promoting a more judicious use of forages. Forage yield and quality is a subject that concerns all dairy producers. This issue of Dairy Knowledge at your fingertips gives you a preview of our new training course offered in all the regions of Quebec. The entire Valacta team wishes you Happy Holidays and invites you to join us in taking up the forage challenge in 2013. This offer has more concrete advan- tages than simple best wishes for prosperity in 2013. Happy New Year! DANIEL LEFEBVRE, Ph.D., agr. General Manager The Quebec Forage Council’s strate- gic planning shows us that yields have stagnated over the past decade. This planning tells us that producers need to inform themselves and that they need to seek out information to change the situation.Mr. GERMAIN LEFEBVRE, agr., Chair of the Quebec Forage Council To ensure maximum long-term profitability for a dairy farm, the herd needs to produce a great deal of milk and consume large amounts of forage, and that forage has to be produced at a reasonable cost.Mr.RENé ROY, agr., agroeconomist at Valacta If the various players in the forage sector, including dairy producers, put as much energy into developing this sector as has been done for the soya and corn sectors over the last half century, a real revolution is on our doorstep, a green gold one. It is in this spirit that Valacta’s management, board of directors and staff are pleased to offer you the Forage Challenge, the product of a successful collaborative effort between the deve- lopment team and many experts in this sector. Mr. ALPHONSE PITTET, Dairy Producer in St-Tite, Vice President of Valacta On the subject of forages... 1 Conseil québécois des plantes fourragères

At the scientific poster expo, Débora Santschi presented the situation of ketosis in Quebec and its effects on production. Thanks to our Ketolab service, we now have an updated portrait of ketosis in Quebec dairy herds.

Steve Adam, Comfort, Behaviour and Animal Well-being Expert, captivated the audience with his conference titled “Build or renovate, the traps to avoid!”
