Sri Lanka start-up in medical tourism bid with Durdans: Healing Journey, a leisure sector start-up is offeringmedical tourism services as Sri Lanka attracts more foreign visitors after the end of a 30-year civil war,
officials said. Healing Journey has tied up with Sri Lanka's Durdans Hospital [CHL: LKR95.1]and Ceylon Tours
to provide the service to international clients. "Medical tourism is the choice a patient makes to travel
outside ones are of resident to obtain medical treatment and healthcare ," Sanjaya Padmaperuma chief
executive of Healing Journey said. "This has not developed in Sri Lanka. There is an opportunity."The firm hasstarted marketing its services through its website, Healingjourney.lk. Medical tourism arbitrages the
differential pricing for medical services in Asia and Latin America where the cost of undergoing a procedure
in the US or Europe, especially treatments that are not covered by insurance, a patient could also have a
holiday. Medical services ranging from dental work, plastic surgery, fertility treatment and cardio vascular
and neuro-surgery procedures are offered to prospective clients. Doctor N H K Ruwan Senatilleke, manager
medical services at Durdans Hospital says the hospital already has foreign clientele, especially from the
Maldives. India, Thailand and Malaysia are leaders in medical tourism, but Sri Lanka is competitive, he said.
Ceylon Tours managing director Suren Ediriweera says competition from India is high but medical tourists
going to India can usually only visit one city, but those coming to Sri Lanka can have a varied experience in a
short time. Patients can choose pre-medical and post-medical tourism services. Padmaperuma says
Ayurveda, a form of traditional medicine found in South Asia could also be provided to visitors. [Source: www.lbo.lk]

Bad weather to negatively affect January tea output: The present inclement weather conditions in thecountry may affect the tea intake in January as it has resulted in poor worker turnout in the plantations,
John Keells Tea Brokers said. According to the Meteorological Department forecast, more rain could be
expected in the coming days. The inclement weather has resulted in poor worker turnout on the plantations.
Intakes from the Low Grown Sector too were marginally lower due to lack of sunshine and overcast
conditions. Western sector, although wet has had slightly brighter weather and crop intakes from this sector
are on the upward trend, John Keells Tea Brokers commented. On the global front, Kenya continues torecord healthy intakes, commencing with the last quarter of 2012 which has eased the overall deficit to 8.4
million kilograms by end November from a substantial deficit of 21 million kilograms midway into the year.
As at end November, Kenyan tea exports have recorded a slightly higher volume compared to the same
period last year. Adverse weather conditions in India continued to plague the tea industry with crops on a
downward trend, particularly from the highest producing North Eastern Assam state. All India Tea Crop has
recorded a deficit of 5.53% between January October compared to the corresponding period of the
previous year, consequently export volumes in the first nine months of the year were lower along with less
foreign exchange earnings. Despite the lower export volume the unit price realized has been higher.
Statistics released by the countrys Tea Board indicate that India has lost exports to all its markets with the
biggest being accounted for by the Commonwealth countries. In the meantime, whilst most of the major
Black Tea producing countries recorded a drop in production in 2012, Bangladesh on the contrary recorded asurplus. To end October 2012, Bangladesh had harvested a crop 52.24 million kilos compared to 48.98
million kilos during the corresponding period of 2011. It is also reported that, Tea Exports from Bangladesh
has dropped due to a rise in domestic consumption. Internal consumption has been rising at the rate of 3.5%
annually against a 1% rise in production. If this trend continues tea industry sources state that, Bangladesh
may have to resort to imports by the year 2015. Bangladesh produces approximately 60 million kilos of tea
annually.

Rupee hits 9-month high, despite CB intervention: The Sri Lankan rupee rose to a nine-month closing highon Thursday due to foreign inflows into government securities despite the Central Bank buying dollars to
prevent a rapid appreciation, dealers said. The rupee closed at 126.12/20 to the dollar from Wednesdaysclose of 126.20/30. We saw foreign inflows into treasury bonds. The central bank bought dollars from the
market to prevent a sharp gain, a currency dealer said. Deputy Central Bank Governor Nandalal
Weerasinghe said the Central Bank had been buying dollars for a few days to prevent volatility. Currency
dealers expect more inflows into treasury bonds and bills after the governments debt office said on
Wednesday Sri Lanka could accommodate up to LKR60 bn foreign investment in government securities this
year. Sri Lankan stocks edged down for a second session, despite foreign inflows.

euro-era highs, markets are endorsing last years ECB-led rescue efforts and rebutting warnings of an
imminent euro breakup. The next test for authorities will come if the economic slump reignites investor
doubts about cash-strapped governments. The ECB may be unhappy with the current economic situation of
the euro zone, but optimism about the future is growing, said Christian Schulz, a former ECB official and
now an economist at Berenberg Bank in London. The central bank yesterday held off doling out more
recession-fighting medicine, keeping its benchmark interest rate at 0.75 percent in a unanimous decision amonth after calls for a cut from some of its Governing Council. It maintained its so- far untapped offer to buy
the bonds of sovereigns acquiescing to reform demands and will hand banks further cheap long-term
funding.

Bondholders in Crosshairs as Merkel Travels to Cyprus: Bondholders are in the crosshairs as conservativeEuropean leaders gather in Cyprus amid talks over a bailout that may be as big as the nations entir e
economy. German Chancellor Angela Merkel said this week Cyprus wont get special treatment as it
negotiates the rescue it requested in June. She, Irelands Enda Kenny and other leaders of the European
Peoples Party descend on the city of Limassol to discuss the next European Union budget as they back Nicos
Anastasiades, head of the DISY opposition, as successor to Communist President Demetris Christofias in
February elections. Aid for the third-smallest euro nation will test policy makers commitments to hold the17-member currency bloc together and avoid more sovereign-debt writedowns after they called Greeces
restructuring a one-off. The workarounds may put most of the burden on bank bondholders and possibly
depositors. Shared losses will be essential to win approval from German lawmakers, even at the cost of
sending financial markets a very bad message, said Guntram Wolff of Bruegel, a Brussels- based research
organization. It will be impossible to get funding from the Bundestag to bail out depositors of Cypriot
banks. With European markets rallying on speculation the worst of Europes debt crisis has passed, Cyprus
has been bogged down in negotiations over its bailout, the fifth in the euro area since 2010. Cypriot banks
lost more than EUR4 bn (USD5.3 bn) in Greeces debt restructuring.

Russia to Weigh Serbian USD1 bn Request, Cypriot Rescheduling: Russia is considering Serbias request for aUSD1 bn credit and will discuss more lenient terms for Cypruss repayment of its EUR2.5 bn (USD3.3 bn)loan, Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov said. Russian and Serbian officials plan to continue talks in the
coming weeks on the loan request, Siluanov told reporters in Moscow today after a meeting with Serbian
Finance Minister Mladjan Dinkic. Russia signed an agreement today to provide USD800 mn to the Balkan
country for its infrastructure projects. Russia will work with European countries on possible steps to revise
Cypruss repayment schedule, Siluanov said. The east Mediterranean nation has officially asked Russia to
extend its EUR2.5 bn loan by five years to 2021, the Nicosia-based Finance Ministry said yesterday. The euro
areas third-smallest economy borrowed the funds in December 2011 and has recently sought an additional
EUR5 bn from Russia. Russia, holder of the worlds fourth-largest international reserves, has been
approached for bilateral financial aid from at least five countries, Siluanov told reporters last month. The
USD800 mn loan made to Serbia will go towards Serbias railways and completes a USD1 b n package signedin 2009. The terms of the agreement were extremely favorable, Dinkic said today. Russia has no plans to
grant a new EUR5 bn loan to Cyprus, Deputy Finance Minister Sergei Storchak said in an interview in Moscow
on Dec. 24. Cyprus, downgraded three steps by Moodys Investors Service yesterday, is bracing for results of
a study next week that may show the island nation needs the worlds biggest bank bailout as a proportion of
gross domestic product in at least 16 years.

UK Manufacturing Output Unexpectedly Declined in November: UK manufacturing productionunexpectedly declined in November, led by metal products and electrical equipment, indicating continued
weakness in the economy toward the end of 2012. Factory output fell 0.3% from October, when it dropped
1.3%, the Office for National Statistics said today in London. The median forecast of 24 economists in aBloomberg News survey was for a 0.5% gain. Total industrial production rose 0.3%, also less than forecast.
Britains economy is at risk of a triple-dip recession as a slump in the euro area and government budget cuts
add to pressure from depressed household spending. The Bank of England left its bond-buying program on
hold yesterday as it assesses early signs of success in its credit-boosting plan aimed at encouraging an
economic recovery. Manufacturers are facing a big headwind from global demand, said George Buckley,
Chief UK Economist at Deutsche Bank AG in London. We may see a contraction in gross domestic product in
the fourth quarter, and theres a large risk of a triple dip. The pound extended its decline against the dollar
after the data were published.

Trade Gap in US Probably Narrowed as Fuel Costs Declined: The trade deficit in the US probably shrank inNovember as lower fuel costs curbed imports and exports rebounded, economists said before a report
today. The gap narrowed to USD41.3 bn from Octobers USD42.2 bn, according to the median forecast of 68
economists surveyed by Bloomberg. Another report today may show import prices were little changed in
December. A decline in the cost of petroleum that is helping to trim the import bill, combined with sustained

job gains, is also boosting the buying power of US households. In addition, stabilization in global growth, led
by a pickup in China, will probably spur sales overseas for American companies such as Alcoa Inc. There
might be a little bit more of a bounce in exports relative to imports , said Guy Berger, an Economist at RBS
Securities Inc. in Stamford, Connecticut. It seems like oil imports backed off a little bit. The Commerce
Departments trade report is due at 8:30 a.m. in Washington. Estimates in the Bloomberg survey ranged
from shortfalls of USD39.8 bn to USD45 bn. Chinas exports jumped 14.1% in December from a year earlier,
the most since May, a report showed yesterday. Together with a 19-month high in the pace of Chinasmanufacturing expansion reported Dec. 31, the figures are boosting optimism that a recovery in the worlds
second-biggest economy is gaining traction after a seven-quarter slowdown.
