Teams Eager for NORCECA Competition to Start

OMAHA, Nebraska (Sept. 15, 2013) – The NORCECA Women’s Con-tinental Championship, set for Sept. 16-21 in the Midwestern United States city of Omaha, Neb., was declared ready to go by its control committee presi-dent Mr. Cristobal Marte Hoffiz after today’s preliminary inquiries, final in-spection and general technical meeting.

The biennial tournament, in its 23rd edition dating back to 1969, features three round-robin pools of three teams. Matches are set for 4 p.m. CT, 6 p.m. CT and 8 p.m. CT each day.• Pool A: Dominican Republic, Costa Rica and Trinidad & Tobago• Pool B: United States, Cuba and Mexico• Pool C: Puerto Rico, Canada and St. Lucia

Quarterfinal round matches are on Sept. 19, followed by semifinals on Sept. 20. The gold- and bronze-medal matches conclude the tournament on Sept. 21. The winner of the tournament earns a spot in the season-ending FIVB Grand Champions Cup this November in Japan.

All matches can be viewed live online at http://bit.ly/1efZUwU through the USA Volleyball web site.

Cuba has won the NORCECA Women’s Continental Championship a record 13 times. The U.S., the defending champions, has won the tournament six times and missed the podium just twice in the previous 22 editions. Domini-can Republic won the event in 2009 and has reached the podium the last six events. Mexico won the first two editions of the event in 1969 and 1971.

Canada Head Coach Arnd Ludwig“We have had a pretty good long summer with a lot of practice. The team worked really hard and I hope the hard work that we put in the last month will pay off at this tournament. Our goal is to make the semifinals this year. I think definitely the U.S. will be one of my top favorites if I have to pick the winner of this tournament.”

Costa Rica Head Coach Horacio Nestor“Our preparations began in the Central American Games followed by the Pan American Cup. We have had fine preparations, but we need more internation-al games. Costa Rica always has been in the last places, and at this moment we hope to stay in the fifth to seventh places.”

Cuba Head Coach Juan C. Rodriguez“My team is very new, we are coming with a very young team. My coach-ing difficulty in this tournament is to analyze what the position of Cuba is in NORCECA. My team is preparing for the U23 World Championship in Mexico next month by trying to do their best in this tournament. I tell my team to tell my team every day to improve in the games.”

Dominican Republic Head Coach Marcos Kwiek“We are very happy to be in the United States. This is the second time we have played in the United States, the first time was the Pan American Cup in Miami. We look forward to have a well-balanced, strong event. It is an event that gives us a vacancy into the Grand Champions Cup in Japan. We come here from the World Grand Prix, where we did very well and it was a good tournament for us. We are well prepared. All the players are in good health. We look forward to have a good tournament.”

Mexico Head Coach Claudio Torres“The tournament is very strong. The teams have lots of experience in com-petition. Our team is very young. We try to gain experience with more com-petition. We have our players who can get more experience for the World Championship.”

Puerto Rico Head Coach Jose Mieles“The Puerto Rico team’s major goal is to win the tournament and qualify to the FIVB Grand Champions Cup in Japan. The team has been working very hard the last three weeks after finishing participation in the FIVB World Grand Prix. The team is ready for the competition here in Omaha, which includes a couple players who were not available this summer. The big goal is to qualify for the World Grand Champions Cup and win the NORCECA for the first time for Puerto Rico.”

St. Lucia Head Coach Florian Combie“It is a wonderful opportunity to participate in the NORCECA Continental Championship for us. We are looking forward to giving our best. We know there are a lot of strong teams in this confederation. But this is an opportunity to see how we stack up against these strong teams and hopefully to see how we stack up. Most people see volleyball on television, but unless a player re-ally has faced the opposition they get a reality check as to what is expected.”

Trinidad & Tobago Head Coach Francisco Cruz“We have had lots of difficulties in Trinidad & Tobago for training and for everything. But finally we finished the preparation and I have expectations for our team to have better position to the last NORCECA. In Trinidad & Tobago, we are very young in NORCECA. At the last NORCECA, we finished in the last position, the eighth position. And now we hope to get a better a position, maybe seventh or eighth place.”

United States Head Coach Karch Kiraly“I think our preparation for the NORCECA Championship has been quite good considering that the turnaround time was really quick. We got back from World Grand Prix and a long five-week stint there with lots of learning and battling. We spent less than two weeks at home, and we had a great scrimmage and got in a USA uniform about a week ago. So we are really excited to be playing on USA soil. It is not often we get that chance. We have a few goals, and that is to continue our improvement. We have made lots of strides this year in 2013 by integrating a number of players who have not spent much time in a USA uniform prior to 2013. And now we have more integration as we have somebody back with us in Jordan Larson-Burbach, who did not get to play much this year prior to this tournament. She spent a few weeks with us here and there in training. This was a year of recharging for her, so we are excited to kind of bring it slowly but surely back together and looking forward to the future. We are looking forward to the opportunity to play against a great slate of team in this zone, which has lots of deep compe-tition with Dominican Republic after they came off a nice finish in London last year with a four-way tie for fifth place and making the quarterfinals. Of course we also have Puerto Rico, Cuba and Canada. So there are lots of good teams to face and to battle here, and give all these teams a chance to see how we measure up and see how well we can play point-by-point one play at a time.
