United States Sweeps Puerto Rico to Reach NORCECA Final Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA (Aug. 31, 2012) – The United States recorded a 25-15, 25-16, 25-20 victory over the Puerto Rico on Friday evening at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., to reach the NORCECA Men’s Junior Continental Championship gold-medal match. United States will face Canada on Saturday at 17:30 in a rematch of the most recent NORCECA Men’s Junior Continental Championship in 2010, while Puerto Rico will meet Mexico for the bronze medal. The top three finishing teams in the tournament advance to the 2013 FIVB Volleyball Men’s Junior Continental Championship. By reaching the title match, both United States and Canada have guarantee a spot in next year’s World Championship event. Benjamin Patch sparked the United States with 16 points including three blocks, while Nicholas Olson charted 11 points. Gregory Petty and Matthew Tarantino notched 10 points each.

United States and Canada Advance to NORCECA Gold-Medal Match Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA (August 31, 2012) – Canada will face United States in the NORCECA Men’s Junior Continental Championship on Saturday after semifinal round victories Friday over Mexico and Puerto Rico, respectively. The United States versus Canada gold-medal match will take place at 17:30 after the bronze-medal match of Puerto Rico versus Mexico at 15:00. The United States is the defending champion of the biennial NORCECA event after defeating Canada in the most recent edition in 2010. The United States and Canada have guaranteed spots into the 2013 FIVB Volleyball Men’s Junior World Championship by reaching this edition’s gold-medal match. Puerto Rico and Mexico will vie for the third spot awarded into next year’s World Championship. Honduras faces Guatemala for fifth place at 13:00, while Curacao challenges St. Vincent and the Grenadines in the seventh-place match at 11:00. Puerto Rico had nine different players score points led by Francisco Velez and Pedro Nieves with six points each. The United States service kept Puerto Rico out of system that included a 7-0 ace advantage. The U.S. added an 8-6 block advantage and 45-27 kill margin. The United States controlled the middle stages of the opening set pulling away to a 25-15 victory that included Patch scoring seven points and three of the team’s four blocks. USA’s Gregory Petty started a 4-0 run with two aces to put the U.S. in front 7-4 in the second set. Puerto Rico called timeout trailing 18-12 in the second set and the lead expanded to 24-13 with consecutive Christenson aces and back-to-back blocks by Tarantino on a 5-0 run. Puerto Rico saved three set points before a James Shaw kill ended the set at 25-16. Puerto Rico scored three unanswered points to level the third set score at 18-all, but the United States responded with a 3-0 run of its own including a Scott Rhein ace to put the score at 21-18. The USA finished the set with a 25-20 victory. Match 17: Canada Holds Back Mexico to Reach NORCECA Title Match Canada advanced to the NORCECA Men’s Junior Continental Championship gold-medal match with a 25-17, 25-18, 24-26, 25-21 victory over Mexico on Friday afternoon. Canada had balanced scoring with nine of its available 11 players scoring at least one point and five players in double digits. Dany Demyanenko led Canada with 18 points, while Alexander William Russell added 12 points in the victory. Jarrid Michael Ireland and Brook Alois Sedore scored 11 points and Ryley Brendan Barnes tacked on 10 points. Sergio Perez led Mexico with 19 points, followed by Jesus Alberto Perales’ 18 points. Canada’s block provided a 13-5 scoring edge over Mexico, in addition to a 60-54 edge in kills. Canada was credited with a 37-30 advantage in digs led by Tyler Koslowsky’s 14.

Canada’s block was dominant throughout the opening set with five in the 25-17 victory. Canada also held its errors to three in the set and used seven Mexico errors to its advantage. Canada used consecutive aces by Milan Nikic to reach a 16-11 lead at the second technical timeout of the second set and forged ahead to a 25-18 victory. Canada opened the third set leading 3-0, but Mexico came back to square the set at 8-all. The set stayed close the rest of the way as Mexico tied the set up at 23-all after trailing by two most of the way. Mexico saved one match point and took the set 26-24 on a Canada error. Mexico came back from an 8-5 deficit in the fourth set to take a 14-12 advantage. Back-to-back Canada blocks put it back in front 17-16 and went up 21-18. Canada finished set at 25-21 with the final four of five points. Match 16: Honduras Edges Curacao in Close Match Honduras rallied past Curacao 25-27, 25-19, 27-25, 25-19 Friday afternoon during the Classification 5-8 round. Ricardo Vasquez led Honduras with 17 points, while teammates Jose Vasquez contributed 15 points and Frank Alley 13 points. Quinten Anthony paced Curacao with 26 points while Jurcham Meulens followed with 21 points. Honduras benefited from 44 Curacao errors in the match to its own 22 in offsetting Curacao’s 59-48 margin in kills. Honduras held a slim 9-7 block advantage. Honduras rattled off three straight for a 23-22 lead in the opening set. Curacao saved two set points and gained the lead at 26-25 and won the set 27-25 on an ace by Quinten Anthony. Honduras opened a 7-1 advantage in the second set, but Curacao rallied to within 11-9. Honduras answered with three quick points assuming a 14-9 lead and maintained the momentum for a 25-19 victory. Curacao recovered from an 8-5 deficit in the third set to level the score at 10-all. Honduras maintained a slim lead until Curacao tied the set at 23-all with back-to-back points, but Honduras put the set away at 27-25 on its third set-point chance. After Curacao rallied to tie the fourth set at 11-all, Honduras rolled to a 16-12 advantage and capped the match with a 25-19 victory. Match 15: Guatemala Over St. Vincent and the Grenadines Guatemala scored a 25-12, 25-16, 25-16 victory over St. Vincent and the Grenadines during the Classification 5-8 round Friday afternoon. Erick Noel Colindres Ipina, Gerardo Antonio Gonzalez Paz and Christopher Leon Du John all provided Guatemala with a team-high eight points. Ijahlon Butler led St. Vincent and the Grenadines with 10 points and Jahmal Small added four points. Guatemala held a sizeable 34-15 margin in kills, in addition to a 7-2 margin in blocks. Both teams had to overcome a high number of errors ith St. Vincent and the Grenadines committing 30 and Guatemala 24. Guatemala scored the opening set win 25-12 with six different players scoring at least one point. St. Vincent and the Grenadines bolted to a 5-1 advantage in the second set. Guatemala took the lead at 11-9 on a 6-1 scoring run and continued to push forward to a 25-16 victory with three different players starting the second set. St. Vincent and the Grenadines stayed close in the third set trailing 14-13, but Guatemala pull away with three unanswered points en route to a 25-16 victory.
