Looking Back – Part 2 Welcome to the second part of my looking back at some of the issues Ive mentioned in my Newsletter pieces during my time with DAG. This time I will cover March 2016 June 2017. In March 2016 I reported how someone had stopped me in Sainsburys to make a donation towards our appeal for support following our financial crisis, and thanked Cathy Harland as she stepped down from her Trustee role. In April I was remarking on changes to Motability – there have been more since then! Mays piece highlighted our parliamentary constituency being the one with the lowest success rate for PIP application successes at just 27%. I paid tribute to Chris Roberts and Jean Fairey, in June, following their deaths. Thanks were expressed in July to Volunteers Mike B, Mike S & Emma, and Vicky Millson August 2017 ISSUE 230 DAG News Newsletter of Whitby, Scarborough & Ryedale Disability Action Group This Newsletter is available by e-mail (PDF), and in large print. was welcomed as she took on our Mobility Equipment Hire Service. The result of the EU Referendum and England football team’s debacle at Euro 2016 both received mentions in my piece in August, whilst in September it was Jean Fairey’s legacy, and the income (£1,000+) from two fund-raising days which made the news. The difficulties for disabled people in using public transport was in my piece in October. Whilst I was in hospital for my triple heart by-pass Mike Hutchinson, DAG’s Chair, ably deputised for me and talked of DAG’s future (November) and the danger of telephone scams (December 2016/January 2017). I returned for the February issue paying tribute to Margaret Trowsdale for all she had done for DAG as a Passenger Assistant, whilst in March Hilda Wray’s donation made it into my piece, along with Roger Cohen’s retirement from driving the minibus. In April we celebrated the success of Scarborough & Ryedale Community Cycling achieving the Duke of York’s Community Initiative Award – we still work closely with them on our Befriending through Sport project. May 2017 saw me celebrating the surprise continuation of Scarborough Borough Council’s funding for our Welfare Benefits Advice service, and in June I mentioned the DAG Day (26

th August) and announced my retirement.

Phew! There it is. A quick look back at 3 years through my Newsletter pieces. And so to the future…..I can announce that Ian Peck, formerly of Coast & Vale Community Action, and someone I have known for over 10 years, is to be interviewed about being my successor. If he is appointed, please welcome him as you did me. I am sure that he would bring a new and fresh approach to DAG. Thank you to everyone reading this for giving me the privilege of being part of DAG since 2014. Now, who is going to pass me my pipe and slippers?.....Ha! Ha! Only joking of course. Richard

Businesses Can Be Dementia-Friendly

Hardly a day passes without some mention in news reports of the number of people in the UK being diagnosed and living with dementia. Organisations such as the Alzheimer’s Society, and locally the Dementia Action Alliance are working hard to make our organisations, services, businesses, villages and towns more dementia friendly.

How can we make a difference? DAG Member, Ian Lawson told us about the Dementia Friendly Business Guide – a toolkit on working towards becoming a dementia friendly organisation. His report has been edited due to space. The full version is available from the DAG office.

“On Tuesday 9 May 2017, the Programme Partnerships team launched the Dementia-Friendly Business Guide with the support of ambassador Angela Rippon CBE, in conjunction with the Prime Minister's Champion Group.

The purpose of the guide is to help businesses get started on becoming a dementia-friendly organisation. It provides tips, guidance and signposting to best practice resources and tools to help businesses become more dementia-friendly and highlights how small changes can go a long way in supporting both customers and staff alike. All businesses can contribute to tackling the social and economic impact of dementia and can make a big difference for people with dementia and their carers by making a commitment to become more dementia-friendly. And, becoming a dementia-friendly business can also bring economic benefits.

To order/download your copy of the guide go to https://www.alzheimers.org.uk/forms/form/267/en/order_form_dementia_friendly_businesses_guide”
