First Aid
We have been unsuccessful in obtaining St Johns or sim
ilar
(seems like their staff like to take holidays too). There is a
first aid kit and certified supervisor available for minor
injuries. Should the unlikely happen and there is a serious
injury we are within a 10 m
inute drive to civilisation on all
days. There is an ambulance station at Cooranbong, at
Kitchener we are 8 m
inutes from Cessnock Hospital (24H
casualty), and the uni is practically adjacent to the M
ater
Hospital (24H casualty).
Mosquitoes
Mosquitoes
Mosquitoes
Mosquitoes
Due to recent rains the m
osquito population in this area is
quite high and they are particularly bad at the university.
While they are generally just an irritation they can carry
diseases such as Ross River virus and Dengue fever. It is
advisable to have some repellent handy just in case they
are still around during the carnival.

Full body cover is recommended for all days with the
possible exception of the university on Day 4 where there
are pockets of bushland. We also strongly advise competi-

serious injury or become distressed and need assistance.

Water will be available on course (at specific controls or at

need for organisers to supply large quantities by bringing

heat stroke should consider carrying their own water on
course (e.g. camelback).

Competitors need to be aware of an abundance of spider
webs throughout the competition area. The spiders them-
selves are m
ostly small, certainly harm
less, but the pres-
ence of the webs/spiders m
ight im
pact on running speed.
If you shout "go the knights", or for those aficionados of the
round ball game "go the jets", the spiders have agreed to
allow runners to pass. Some orienteers probably won't en-
joy this situation too m
uch, but look forward to the fact that
this is, overall, a terrific area for orienteering.
