Executive Summary This report on industry outreach events outlines the first year’s results in accordance with Communication plan (D4.1) delivered in May 2012. The goals of industry outreach events are to promote the use of Open MT and Moses in particular, as well as to share the learnings and the research progress. With events in Asia, Europe and North America we planned to attract at least 30 attendees per session. In 2012 we succeeded in attracting a larger attendance than targeted to promote three key messages: 1. Moses is a state-of-art machine translation toolkit. It is best suited to making specialized MT engines for specific clients and industry-domains. 2. Using Moses helps ensure flexibility and choice for users and fosters a healthy competitive landscape. 3. Using Moses helps to improve translation processes and capacity and create new business opportunities. Participants TAUS is a leader of Work package 4 “Industry Outreach” and is supported by UEDIN and ALS (now Capita Translation and Interpreting)

1. Open MT Showcases

The free Open Source MT Showcases took place in Monte Carlo, Beijing, Paris and Seattle.

Prior to the events an online promotion campaign was implemented to reach and attract participants.

1.1. Format The opening talk introduced Moses SMT and gave an overview of various use-scenarios from small and large companies that have or are in the process of incorporating MT into their service offerings or operations. This was followed by 4-6 presentations from Moses users. The meetings ended with highly interactive panel discussions where participants posed questions to speakers.1

To frame the content at each event an explanation was provided of four models of Moses adoption. Each speaker presentation was then contextualised with respect to which of the fours models it was situated in. Model 1 and 2 – Companies install, train and run own engine(s) Speakers came from AVB Translations, Adobe, CrossLang, Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Science, Logrus, Straker Translations, Sybase, Symantec and Trusted Translations

Model 3 – Commercial offerings built on Moses, often provided by translation companies Speakers came from Capita Translation and Interpreting (formerly Applied Language Solutions), Hunnect, Pangeanic and Tilde Model 4 – Commercial offerings combining Moses and other technologies, usually provided by technology specialists Speakers came from tauyou and Safaba Translation Solutions At each event participants received a copy of the program and 1 page overview of the MosesCore project.

1.2. Audience Overall we have exceeded the targeted amount of 30 participants per session by 50%. Usually most of those that registered actually participated. The exceptions were Beijing, where almost all registrants attended and Monte Carlo where half of registrants attended.

Chart 1 Open MT Showcases: Registered vs. actual participants, 2012 The following chart shows the comparison between the previous participants of of the TAUS events and the new participants with the special interest in the Open MT Showcases. It’s clear that we have managed to attract new participants and raise a new audiences awareness of open MT.

The following chart represents participants per type. According to the data, half of the attendees at the Open MT showcases throughout the year were language services providers (49%), a key target audience.

2.1.1. Results   The event was held on a sunny Sunday in Monte Carlo, leading to a low registered to attendance ratio (2:1). From the feedback we elicited at the time from the audience, which tended to have very little knowledge of MT in general, they found it useful overview. There was no formal feedback process as the event. The session provided a good platform for Moses based vendors to raise awareness of their solutions to new audiences. “Presenting at the MosesCore events has given tauyou the opportunity of sharing its knowledge and learning from others as well. Besides, this significantly increases the

awareness of our solutions, and has generated some interesting leads for our company.”

Diego Bartelome, tauyou

5. Conclusions Based on feedback from participants and speakers all Open MT Showcases were thought to be well resourced, and had interesting and relevant content. It is clear that these events help ensure Moses has sufficient awareness in the translation industry and that the consortium is able to learn about industry usage through the interaction at events.

One of the primary lessons was that people came to the events to learn not only about Moses, but also more generally about machine translation. Next year’s events will be positioned as MT Showcases as a consequences. People in industry seek ease and simplicity of use. The launch of version 1 of Moses will go some way to addressing this issue. It was clear that many participants were in the very early orientation stages of making a decision on whether and how to adopt MT. Unless end-clients demand MT to help reduce cost, handle volume and/or reduce turnaround time, the decision making process takes a year or often two. Given that many computer-assisted tools are or have already integrated MT vendor’s solutions, we can expect that MT adoption is taking place independently of MosesCore outreach events. These vendors solutions include many Moses based customizable solutions, such as those from the speaker during the Showcases, as well as from Microsoft and Google.

Page 11: D 4.3 MosesCore 1st Yr Events-Aug. · PDF fileBartolome, tauyou 6. The Simple Install ... One of the primary lessons was that people came to the events to learn not only about Moses,

- 11 -

The Showcase events clearly serve a useful purpose by demystifying MT and setting expectations for beginners, providing a way for Moses based solutions to be highlighted, as well as getting feedback from the industry. The industry does not stand still. In 2012 we saw proprietary solutions, for example, from Microsoft, evolve by being extremely easy to use and keenly priced. It is unlikely that the Showcases are sufficient to grow Moses adoption. All they can do is ensure awareness and help the project team to be responsive to market preferences.

6. Plans for 2013

In light of our key learning point, the events will be repositioned as MT Showcases in 2013, where at least half the content will focus on Moses and or open source MT. The following events are scheduled for 2013:

-‐ MT Showcases in Singapore, 10 April 2013. Hosted at Localization World -‐ Open MT Showcases in London, UK, 12 June 2013. Hosted by Localization

World -‐ Open MT Showcases in Santa Clara, USA, 9 October 2013. Hosted at

Localization World We will also organize a meeting of Moses Users in industry to look help share their experiences and look at areas of cooperation.
