Solar + Storage: Why 1+1=3Recently, Geli partnered with the Rocky Mountain Institute to host a webinar explaining the value of solar-plus-storage for commercial and industrial customers. In this presentation, we will update our findings to present the following:

Solar-Plus-Storage: Building the Business Case Walk through a solar-plus-storage case study using a healthcare

facility in the American Southwest Identifying Markets and Financing Projects Identify ideal solar-plus-

storage markets, common contracting options Geli ESyst (Geli’s analytics tool for designing storage solutions).

Key Takeaways:

- Adding energy storage to a C&I solar system can improve customer savings by up to 100% - Learn how to claim the federal ITC with storage - Understand specific project economics in a real-world case study

Speaker:Andrew Krulewitz, Geli

Andrew Krulewitz leads marketing and corporate strategy at Geli, a provider of end-to-end design and automation software solutions for the energy storage industry. Prior to his time at Geli, Andrew worked as a consultant with Ford's electric vehicle division and as a market research analyst at GTM Research, a subsidiary of Greentech Media.

Savings Attribution for Integrated Distributed Energy Resources Offerings

Utility DER Program Procurement

Navigant has supported multiple utilities in DER vendor procurements where different resource types had to be compared against each other.

Different technologies, such as demand response, battery storage, and thermal energy storage, have very different characteristics in terms of energy and demand savings, costs, project scope and timelines, and vendor experience. We’ll review analytical tools that do apples-to-apples comparison on quantitative and qualitative criteria to meet the utilities’ program goals.

Speaker:Brett Feldman, Navigant

Brett Feldman is a principal research analyst with Navigant. With 20 years of experience in the utility sector, Brett focuses on demand-side management programs and their implications for the global power industry. Prior to joining Navigant Research, he was a principal for demand response at Constellation Energy, a DSM program manager for Eversource, and a DSM consultant for Nexant and ICF. He has also served as the chair of the Business Issues Committee of the Association of Demand Response and Smart Grid, the chair of the New York Independent System Operator Price Responsive Load Working Group.

Dig Deep and Dig Often to Unlock DER ValueNew and emerging technologies, Big Data, and new customer choices and expectations are all helping to define a modern electric grid that promises to provide safer, more reliable power. In the coming decade, many expect the distribution system to advance from a one-way delivery system to a network of interconnected resources. An integrated, modern grid promises better system efficiency and use of grid assets through an inter-operable utility network. However, these benefits are not without issues and costs. To maximize the benefits of integrated planning and to mitigate the costs of managing widespread DER deployment, utilities must have the ability to see in real time - and proactively manage - the effects of DER devices on system voltage levels, the reactive power or VARs, the flow of current, and the

system frequency regulation in order to maintain a reliable, safe, and resilient network. It is a continuing process of planning and evaluation at a granular level, of digging deep and digging often.

In this presentation, we present a case study and discuss the potential to optimize program performance, target consumer preferences, and minimize locational utility costs, to achieve effective integrated system-level planning and operations.

Speakers:Kenneth Skinner, Integral Analytics, Inc.

Teresa Lutz, Michaels Energy

Teresa Lutz is the Director of Program Evaluation for Michaels Energy. She has over 25 years of experience in the energy industry. She has directed energy efficiency efforts for utility companies, provided oral and written testimony to report and defend utility and evaluation results, and has evaluated energy efficiency, demand response and renewable energy programs as a consultant. Teresa is particularly excited about the emerging evaluation trend that is finally hitting our industry – developmental evaluation (just ask her about it!).

Kenneth Skinner, is Vice President of Risk & Evaluation Products for Integral Analytics, Inc. Ken has over 20 years’ experience in evaluation and risk measurement, having worked as an energy consultant with PHB Hagler Bailly and Financial Times (FT) Energy, and as the Derivative Structuring Manager for the retail energy supplier Sempra Energy Solutions. Ken is a nationally recognized expert in economic evaluation and modeling of energy assets including energy storage, distribution and generation, efficiency and demand response, renewable energy alternatives, financial derivatives and structured contracts using net

present value, econometric and statistical methods, optimization principles, and real option valuation techniques.

Feed the Data Hungry

Consumers are hungry for data. In 2016, it is estimated that the average person consumes 3.6 zettabytes of data daily. But how much do consumers know about their energy use data? How much control do they really have? Through the advanced development of new technology, consumers are now able to have better control and understanding of their energy usage, on a per device and whole home levels. We will discuss a platform where consumers are able to intelligently control thermostats, plug lugs and appliances combined with solar and battery in a closed loop fashion to achieve utility load shed and consumer consumption goals. You will get a better understanding of the possibilities of Home Energy Management Solutions which incorporate renewable energy infrastructure, battery storage and advanced self-computing software/hardware. Learn how you can help reshape the way the world uses energy.

Key Takeaways: Utilities are always looking for ways to engage with customers and customers are looking for usage data. This presentation will offer utilities solutions to satisfy both. This whole home energy management system will better provide customers manual or automated actionable ways to reduce energy and take control of their homes.

Speaker:Christian Rawson, Honeywell

Christian Rawson joined Honeywell in 2014 as a Product Manager for Smart Grid Solutions, directing their Energy Storage strategy and related deployment projects. Prior to joining Honeywell, Christian was faculty at the Hawaii Natural Energy Institute (HNEI), at the University of Hawaii from 2011 as a Senior Analyst and Project Manager for projects related to the integration and analysis of energy storage technologies, AMI Infrastructure and power systems. Christian previously held positions with the American Samoan Government and the United States DOE.

Using DC Microgrids as a Valuable Distributed Energy Resource

Today’s electricity grid is rapidly transforming. More distributed energy resources (DERs) are coming online that are having a material impact in utility grid planning. As DERs are becoming more prevalent, we’re also witnessing innovative methods and practices in which they are being implemented. One such method that challenges an age old debate, The Current War is grid-tied direct current (DC) microgrid technology. The use of DC energy is becoming more prevalent as the industry realizes that DC energy is more efficient and reliable. We have entered the digital age where most devices either generate or use DC power. DC systems remove the need for inefficient power conversion devices to transform energy in

buildings, which results in lower cost of solar PV and energy storage ownership, improves building load efficiencies, and provides higher reliability and resiliency. This approach promotes the penetration of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies to better serve emission reduction and zero net energy goals.

Key Takeaways: Analyze the DC microgrid market potential. Gain knowledge of the multi-perspective value propositions offered by a DC

microgrid. Analyze lessons learned from Bosch’s deployment of DC microgrids. Understand the potential alignment of customer preferences with DC

microgrid benefits

Speaker:Andrew Yip, Bosch

Andrew Yip is the Director of Business Development at Bosch. He is responsible for developing and revolutionizing regulatory, policy, and building codes that allow for the growth of DC microgrids in the market, and developing new opportunities and partnerships to implement the Bosch DC microgrid technology across North America. He has been with Bosch for over a year and previous to Bosch was at Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) for over 10 years working on solar and distributed generation

programs and policy efforts.
