MTHE EQUINOX

My favorite day of the astronomicalyear is the autumnal equinox, oneweek later than on this day that I write.Notwithstanding that I am a Florida na-tive who left as a youngun’ but returnedtwice thanks to the Navy, I’m not partialto hot, humid weather, much preferringthe cool seasons for activities.

This is the time when CVR windsdown with the weekend fall tour in October, the last drivers’ ed eventssometimes requiring participants toscrape frost or snow (it has happened)from the Porsche or endure a cold driveto the venue with the track car which

with the heater removed to save weight;ask John Schnabel. This month, on Saturday morning November 6th, we’llhold the Photofest and Annual Meetingat the Trailer Depot. If that date hasn’talready gone by, I would like to seeyou all there. In addition to the electionof officers, we recognize those CVRmembers who have contributed theirtime and talent to benefit the rest of us.As in 2009, we have a real breakfastavailable with “Connecticut’s best pan-cakes” supplied by Chips Restaurantin Orange, and much more food anddrink from the Trailer Depot crew.

After the holidays the Board of Directors will begin the New Year withthe annual January planning meetingwhen each activity chair will present atentative schedule and budget for theyear. This meeting gives the entireboard a chance to review and critiqueeach other’s programs. All membersare invited to join us. You’ll find it tobe very informative; you may even bemoved to join a committee!

One major event requires startingwell before the New Year: the ClubRace. The track contract must be ne-gotiated and completed and the datesaccepted by PCA early enough so CVRcan begin advertising it as early as pos-sible. Also, the goodies and trophieswhich will be given to the racers andthe volunteers need to be ordered. Mostimportantly, the volunteer coordinatormust round up about 80 volunteers, inaddition to the race committee, to man(or woman) all stations for both Fridayand Saturday of the race weekend(since we can’t follow the British Navyof old and press you into service).

Enjoy your winter, and don’t hesi-tate to drive your Porsche, at least onthe clear road days. Remember, it ismade to be driven!

Happy Holidays.

OOne of the best parts of Driver’s Education is the opportunity for in-tense learning. The pit in your stomachthat comes from braking later, taking a turn faster, or flooring the ac-celerator earlier is all too hard to findin the world of responsibleadulthood. So, too, that feelingof individual accomplishment,as you master a corner or keepup (even pass!) a car that usedto leave you behind.

Learning a new track – inmy case, Road America(Elkhart Lake, WI) over LaborDay weekend – provides ahigh concentration of thrillsand chills. The people aredifferent. The cars are dif-ferent. Even the tech line isdifferent (the Chicago region, which ran the event, checks the screwson your battery – and puts on specialtape to show they are secure). And, ofcourse, the track is different.

At 4.048 miles, Road America islonger than Lime Rock (1.53 miles)and Watkins Glen (3.4 miles) and justslightly shorter than Monticello (4.1miles). There are two long straights, avery long carousel, an amusing – seem-ingly easy – “kink,” and two (or more)low-gear turns. There is a lot of run-off around most of the track, and thesetting is beautiful (as long as the animals stay off-line).

The first day is a blur. No matterhow much you look at the track mapor watch videos, there’s nothing like

being there, behind the wheel withyour foot on the gas. An instructor canride along to share their tips and tricksor you can go it alone. Most of the dayis a battle between active awareness(“is this the straight that leads into that

killer corner?”) and appliedtechnique (“that felt like thedownhill at Lime Rock”).Much of the time is spentwith your arm out the win-dow. Gradually, you beginto identify areas leading tothe difficult turns. You refineyour turn-ins and your brak-ing points. You figure outyour gearing and where youcan go faster (or not). Stepby step, you put it all together.By the second day – and thethird, if you are lucky enough

to have one – you are noticeably betterand faster.

At Road America, the fun of thetrack extends to the town of ElkhartLake. The residents warmly embracevisiting drivers and happily share thehistory and celebrity of the track. AtGessert’s ice cream parlor downtown, you can see old photographs and auto-graphs, and the owner may even tellyou stories about Phil Hill as you sipon a malt or phosphate. Great restaurantsin and around the area provide a relaxingway to end the day.

This may or may not be a “vacation”– a point of debate between me andmy husband – but the intense focus

The first day is ablur. No matterhow much you

and concentration are certainly a breakfrom the multi-tasking and distractionsof everyday life. And when you getback to your home track – circlingLime Rock for the thousandth time –it’s somehow different, too.

Road America is a great track, butyou need not travel so far for a new experience. Ask around for recommen-dations and check out the schedules forother clubs (Larry note, “hey!”). NewJersey Motorsports Park (Millville NJ,85 miles from Danbury), Pocono Race-way (Long Pond PA, 140 miles), NewHampshire Motor Speedway (LoudonNH, 225 miles), and Summit PointRaceway (Summit Point WV, 350 miles)are all within an easy day’s drive. CVRmembers have also done “vacations” atMont Tremblant (outside Montreal), Sebring (central Florida), VIR, etc. Andlet us know your favorites.

Best, Rebecca

The great driving, learning, and flat-outFUN continued at the August 15th and September 5th AutoXevents. CVR provides agreat atmosphere wherewe help each person gohome a winner. After all, even though this sport istruly a competition, youquickly find out that thecompetition is mainlyagainst yourself in thequest for a quick time.Overcoming personalchallenges is what makesyou drive your best, andCVR is one of the rareclubs where expert andnovice drivers are allgiven pointers to helpthem get even better.

As usual, the resultsare only a click away on CVR’s web-site (cvrpca.org.) When youlook at them you will notice what makes eachperson a winner. Thingslike steadily improvingtimes, winning the struggle to stay oncourse, or finally missing

that pylon to get a cleanrun. Other subtle thingsdon’t show up in the results but are examplesof victories. Things like;overcoming that scaryfeeling at speed to carryjust a little more momen-tum through a corner;

braking a lot harder thanyou thought a car couldever do; trail-brakingmore gently to keepweight on the frontwheels and overcome thedesigned-in understeerfound in virtually all cars. These are all signs of per-sonal victory, a hallmarkof CVR AutoX events.

Even though eachperson deserves congrat-ulations for their personalachievements, there are afew special achievementsof note. Joe Dupuiscranked the boost of his“Other” car (a fire-breathing STI) to takeFastest Time of Day inAugust, and Jim Matonstook the fastest Porschetime in his Cayman, bothwere a privilege to watch!Equally fun to watch wasthe battle in Novice classas Robert Griffith in hisCaymen eked out a see-saw win over Rob Boscoin his Boxster by a mere.003 seconds! Now that’san example how eachpushed themselves hardall day long and are nowboth better drivers because of it.

The September 5thevent highlighted anotherexample of personal victories. In Novice classRobert Nawton startedthe day with a 50 secondrun and steadily shavedthat down, dropping a

whopping 7 seconds inthe process to take thatclass win in his beautifulGT3RS. Lastly, in the Production 6 class, sweetvictory a whole season in the making goes toEric Jan in his ’05 GT3.Eric jumped a full quan-tum in driving prowess towin. His driving was notonly visibly better, butnow impressively high on the learning curve to where you would never know that he isnew to this sport. Peter Alexopoulos is just behind Eric on thelearning curve and is

also advancing extremely fastin his ’08 GT3.It’s a blast whenyou find a newfriend in a simi-lar car, and on asimilar learningcurve, and itmakes eachperson advance at hyper-speed. When youare having this much fun can’t wait for thenext event!

Speaking of which, with the cooperation ofMother Nature and theTurkey-Day rush, comejoin us on November 21st

WWhen I first volunteered to help withthe production of Challenge I was notparticularly worried about the creativedirection side of the position as it hap-pens that this is what I do for a living, however I knew there were big shoesto fill in terms of the overall editorialdirection of this magazine.

I always looked forwardto receiving my copy of TheChallenge every month andthought that Scott Slauson,John Karam and staff did asuperb job of preparing a very interesting and inform-ative publication. That is whyThe Challenge has alwaysbeen my go-to-guide to seewhat was happening in theCT Valley Region. While Ihave not had the opportunity to partic-ipate in any DE or Autocross events(yet) my wife and I have enjoyed themany Coffee Runs, Concours Events, and Monthly Meetings that we haveattended during the last five years.

Your new Challenge editorial staff,Laura Larson, Nancie Giacalone andI, are hoping to be able to maintain thehigh editorial standard that our CVRmembers have become accustomed to,while continuing to refine visual pres-entation, and going forward, addingmore new features and materials thatwe think you will all enjoy.

That being said, one of the keycomponents in our plans for the futuredirection of this publication is you, ourCVR PCA membership. When we say

“It’s not just the cars, it’s the people”,we mean that quite literally.

Let us know what you think of whatwe are presenting to you each month. Is there something else that you’d liketo see covered in The Challenge? Doyou have any ideas for feature articles?

How about an interestingstory, or nice twisty road thatyou’ve driven lately? Let usknow. We need this kind offeedback in order to take thispublication to the next level.

The second component inour plans for the future is thetightening of the link be-tween The Challenge and ourbeautifully redesigned CVRWebsite. Due to the fact thatwe prepare the artwork for

our printer several weeks before youreceive your issue in the mail, some ofthe information printed here may notnecessarily be the most current. If youare planning on attending an event thatyou read about in Challenge we urgeyou to check the website for the mostcurrent, up-to-date information.

With the “Fall Driving Season” nowin full swing I hope you take the oppor-tunity to enjoy the great Porsche roadsand colorful scenery that our region hasto offer. This is my favorite driving timeof the year, as long as the roads are cleanand ice free we’ll be out there.

Looking forward to hearing from [email protected]

one of the keycomponents inour plans for

DDid you know that you can experiencea 20 minute track session at a worldclass race track without entering your-self and your car in a Club Race or Driver's Education event? It's true! Youcan feel the rush of speed and corneringin the passenger seat of a track-preparedPorsche with a certified CVR Instructorat any CVR Driver's Education event(and also at Autocross events). You needonly be 18 years old, wear long pantsand closed toe shoes and be willing topart with $40 (a genuine bargain giventhat you'd have to pay over $100 to gofor a three lap, five minute ride in aclunky old stock car turning only lefton an oval track – you do the math!).We will even supply the helmet.

Come see for yourself how aPorsche was meant to be driven. Finda future date on the calendar at the

club website (cvrpca.org) and go seeRic or Reese at the Taste of the Trackhauler. If you hang around at lunchtime, you may even get Ric (aka TheBoss of the Sauce).

We’ve been practicingfor this event all season. Fast sweeping turns anddemon fast offsets havebeen added to each ofCVR’s first six AutoXcourses to calibrate oursenses to what we knewwas inevitable. Truth betold… we were still all inawe of the sheer speedand scope thrown at us atthe Zone 1 AutoX event onAugust 28-29. It wasSCARY FAST, in a good

way! The course design-ers took full advantage ofthe massive runways atMoore Airfield in DevensMassachusetts. Slidingyour car through third-gear kinks and right intotop-of-second gearslaloms and carouselshas a way of getting your FULL attention! Challenges that we can’tsqueeze into our normalevents, but these are exactly why nine CVR

AutoX diehards took thetwo hour jaunt in the firstplace. That and to seehow our driving skillsstack-up against the rest of the Northeast’scone chompers.

Based on the overallrankings it’s clear thatCVR’s AutoX programgave us a firm experiencebase that allowed ourteam to overcome theDeven’s awe affect.

CVR ended up with a remarkable 88% trophytake-home rate! The onlymissed trophy was a tes-tament to what happenswhen you are thrown intoa brutally fast class dueto adding just a few modson your car. That classwas full of all-the-waycars and it took theFastest Time of Day towin it! Click on the redZone1 logo on CVR’sweb-site, then on theZone1 Autocross Resultsfor the full results.

Maybe it was pre-cisely because of thechallenging and scary fundriving, or maybe it was

because of the true CVRcamaraderie, but to aperson, CVR drivers allhad a great time and en-joyed the vastly differentdriving experience. Eachone of us came awaybetter drivers because

of it. Some of the Zone1fun even carried over toCVR’s next autocross held the following week-end on September 5thwith several of the Zone1course elements, and

some of the speed werebrought home. As notedin the Pylon Place articleelsewhere in this issue, I believe this experiencedirectly helped Eric Jan’squantum leap in drivingresults. The friendshipswithin CVR and the rest

of the Zone 1 attendeesmade for a really fungroup dinner at the local Irish Pub and madethe PCA takeover of the still-new MarriottSpringhill a very pleasant finishing touchto the weekend.

We were given not-so-subtle hints thatnext year’s Zone 1 AutoX will likely rotate“back south”, probablyto NY or NJ. So defi-nitely put this on youmust-do list. It’s always fun, a goodchallenge, and full ofgreat people. Just thethings CVR AutoXevents are all about!

Autocross is a low speed form of motorsport that emphasizes low-costcompetition and active participation in a non-threatening and safe environment.Drivers will find themselves testing their skill and limits of their cars under thistimed competition where drivers navigate through courses marked by trafficcones rather than tracks; making car handling and driver skill the most importantpriority of this challenge.

The seventh annualFairfield Concours d’Elegance was held theweekend of September11th and 12th at the Fairfield County Hunt Clubin Westport. For one briefshining moment thesprawling grounds, justone mile north of the Post Road corralled a herd of motorized steeds, poised like theirequine counterparts, metaphoraically bold, brave, ready to compete.

Saturday was club day featuring Porsche,Mercedes Benz, BMW,

Aston Martin, Jaguar andFerrari. Lead sponsor,Porsche North America, provided an exhibit andhospitality tent flanked bymore than forty cars fromCVR. Dutifully positionedin military-like formation, these fine examples ofPorsche evolutionprovided a focal point for visitors. It was hard tomiss Jordan Bochanis’saward winning ’62 Speedster, flawless inivory with red livery, or thelilac purple 986 race carbelonging to Jim Adelman. Not to miss Mark Nickson’s yellow 996 with

the track ready SouthSport tire trailer and jackcarrier or Dick Strahota’s’62 pristine, black 356 roadster with over two-hundred thousandmiles on the odometer. The People’s choice winner for Porsche was a dazzling red 1976 930Turbo owned for the pasttwenty-four years byKevin Weiss. In addition to themany classic and contem-porary (how about a 2010Ferrari California!) automobiles on display, there were seminars byKent Bain founder of ARI,Bob Sharp, of the formerBob Sharp Motors, RobSass from Sports Car Market Magazine andDave Kinney of the NewYork Times. I missed thetalks by Rob and Dave, but I did catch Kent Bain’sslide presentation, thatvery matter-of-factlywalked the audiencethrough some jaw drop-ping restorations thatwould have made Rembrandt drop hisbrush. Bob Sharp ofcourse has such a long

illustrious automotive career and has workedwith so many automobilelegends, he can hold eventhe most jaded enthusiastat rapt attention for hours.

For those of you whocollect or appreciate automotive art and memorabilia there were

numerous exhibits, activities for children and a silent auction. Everwanted to drive a newPorsche Panamera orCayenne? All you neededwas driver’s license and you were handed the keys, given a brief

introduction to the car andyou went on a self guidedtour through the backroads of Westport. P.S. thenew Cayenne Six wasenormous fun to drive, lotsof low end torque, greatroadability and a magnifi-cent interior.

In spite of all the wonderful distractions onSaturday, including a greatlunch prepared by the clubstaff, it was hard not tonotice the great whiteBonham’s marquee tentstanding majestically inone corner of the field.Like an enormous clippership laden with preciouscargo, the doors openedto reveal a treasure strovecars ready for auction thefollowing day. The Sunday programbegan with the eagerlyanticipated Concours at10am, followed by theBonham’s Auction at 1pm.It’s difficult to describe theextraordinary automobilesthat crowded the enormous hunt club field. They were the piece deresistance of the week-end. If you knew littleabout automobiles, butappreciated fine design, you could behold the audaciousness of Pininfarina, the sinuouslines of Bertone and Ghiaand the sauciness ofDrake Darrin. If you under-stood innovation, style andsolid engineering youcouldn’t take your eyes off

the 300HP 1931 BugattiType 54 Roadster, boldand daring; or EmmetSmith’s 1959 Aston MartinDB MK111... classic andcontemporary at thesame time Lastly, if youcraved elegance, itabounded, my favoritewas the Waterhouse1930 Pierce Arrow convertible, a reminderthat refinement and understated sophistica-tion remain timeless.

Lest I forget, the proceeds from the Fairfield County Concoursbenefits the Hall-BrookeBehavorial Health Services for children andadults with Autism Spectrum Disorders andother developmental disorders.

On behalf of themembers of CVR, I wantto thank Mike Odiernaand the many volunteersand sponsors, especiallyPorsche North America, who worked tirelessly formany months, with theFairfield County Concoursteam to make this eventan enduring success. Join us next year.

For a first time attendee at the Lime Rock ParkHistorics Races over LaborDay Weekend, the thrillbegan upon nearing thepark and hearing the roarof the engines on thetrack. The sounds were soexciting that it was hard

to control emotions andpark the car. The groundswere crowded with fanseager to see these beautiful cars chasingaround the track... a photographers dream asthe day was beautiful andsunny. Lime Rock Park isa beautiful setting and

race car enthusiasts couldnot be disappointed!

The Porsche raceswere most exciting withmany top finishers from Connecticut including:John Brice, Ridgefield;Dick Strahota, Darien; Jim Scott, Woodbury; Kent Bain, Fairfield; Mike Piera, Newtown;Rockwell Rookey, East Windsor; Pete Brittingham, E. For a track junkie, whatcould be better thanspending an entire daydriving cars on a racetrack? How about spend-ing an entire day drivingcars on a race track beingcoached by a professionaldriving instructor!

The CVR Club day atthe Fairfield Concoursd’Elegance is an impres-sive event; but this yearwas really special whenmy name was called asthe winner of a raffle for aLime Rock Club track day.As I deliberated aboutwhat to do with my prize, not fully understandingwhat was being offered; Ireceived a call from

Lynette Veitenheimer, executive manager of theLR Club, who explainedexactly what I was luckyenough to have won. She made it all sound

very appealing and emphasized, “You’re going to have a great time!” So I chose an availableday and signed up.

My perception of theLR Club had been vagueat best. I’ve watched the

“others” driving during alternative hours at several DE events andwas often curious as towhat they were trying to accomplish; a variety ofcars driving around thetrack relatively alone andfrequently traveling in andout of the pit lane. Being aguest of the Club could beenlightening. Besides, I always had an itch to parkmy car in their reservedpaddock area.

From the moment I arrived at the track,Lynette and the Club teammade every effort to makeme feel welcome andcomfortable, starting witha catered continentalbreakfast at the ClubChalet on the hill. Aftersigning a waiver, SimonKirby, the LP Club Director,

...but this yearwas really special

when my namewas called as thewinner of a rafflefor a Lime RockClub track day.

and I reviewed how myday would be spent. Theplan was simple; use thefacilities, time, and profes-sional coaching to improvemy driving.

Simon, “the Brit”, wasmy pro driving instructorthroughout the day, and hewas by far the best “treat”for me. He’s a very experi-enced driver with manyyears involved with racing. We rode together for atrack orientation, then hechecked me out in theClub’s new BMW M3—myfirst time driving spiritedlywith paddle shifters and achallenge to get used to.After several bouts of in-advertently flashing theheadlights and turning onthe windshield washers, I settled into following Simon’s expert coaching.Four hours of track timemade it comfortable andeasy to run several laps, pit to discuss what wewere working on, then go out and try it all again. The format was alwayslaid back with lots of timeto review what we were attempting to achieve. Simon occasionallyswitched seats to demon-strate a point. Obviously,he was capable of drivingwell above my pace but

settled at a speed to whichI could relate.

The variety of cars, sportsmanship and skilllevel of the drivers wereimpressive. The Clubmembers were all enthusiastic about theircars and most importantly, they were there to havefun and mainly work on improving their drivingskills. Just like me!

Following a deliciousbuffet lunch in the Chalet,we took to the track againto refine what I had beenworking on all morning. At that point, Simon en-couraged me to apply thelessons learned in the M3while driving my own trackcar. Naturally, more comfortable in my car, it allstarted to come together.Simon joined me as wepracticed the earlier rou-tine; drive several laps, pitto discuss, and then backon the track to try it again.

At one point Simondrove my car for a fewlaps to demonstratesomething I needed to seeand feel. Wow! It was areal eye opener to experi-ence my cars potential! I could only imagine howquick he would be withmore time in my car. Foranyone delusional enough

to think that you’re drivingyour car at its limit, giveyourself a treat and a real-ity check by having a prolike Simon drive your caron a track. The exercise isenlightening, educationaland humbling when youwitness the car’s capabilityin really talented hands. The best lesson learned isthat improving the car toincrease performance issecondary to improvingthe driver.

When our time on the track was over, we returned to the Chalet torelax, have some refresh-ments, and chat about theday. Very civilized indeed.Even with all the tracktime, my day flew by, definitely on an adrenalinrush. I didn’t realize howexhausted I was until thedrive home, sometimesthinking of Lynette’s prom-ise, “You’re going to havea great time.” Actually, Ihad a fabulous time!
