A very warm welcome to the CVQO Westminster Award ceremony 2018.

We are once again privileged to celebrate the achievements of 11 fantastic young people in the prestigious setting of the House of Lords and I am very pleased to share this occasion with you all.

This, believe it or not, will be the 16th CVQO Westminster Award ceremony and therefore the 16th time a deserving young person will have had their name etched on the famous CVQO silver lion.

What I would like to say is that the process of selection gets easier with each year that passes but that simply is not the case. In fact, we received more nominations for this year’s CVQO Westminster Award than ever before, so we have had a lot of very difficult decisions to make. This is reflected in the fact that we announced 11 finalists in April, up from 10 last year, as we could not separate a group of the candidates.

Our finalists have been nominated by their cadet groups for a variety of reasons. Some have overcome personal difficulties, others devote much of their free time to helping others or volunteering, however it is safe to say all of them embody the altruistic spirit of the CVQO Westminster Award.

Of course, it does not end here - our finalists have an action-packed two weeks in South Africa in July to look forward to. They will find themselves tested by a rewarding schedule of activities that will see them engage in valuable conservation and community work, which will no doubt give them a new perspective on the world.

Finally, I would like to thank our friends from Pearson, ILM, City & Guilds and everyone who has travelled to be here today from cadet organisations, Armed Forces and the Ministry of Defence. Your support is valued and very much appreciated.

With very best wishes for a wonderful afternoon,

WELCOME
