The primary mission of Air Group FIVE during the· reporting .. : .. >.('' period remained the support of Unite·i Nations ground forces in Korea,·· · This support was primarily an interdiction program for destruction ·or enemy lines of communication. The problem of interdiction has becom$

·more difficult however,.as a result of the increased accuracy and · intensity of enemy anti-aircraft fire. r~ight Heckler ~iissions have proven again that by far the greatest percentage of enemy transportation was noving during the hours of darkness.

PhotograPhic missions have been.flown d~ily and netted excellent results in the identification of camouf~aged targets and damage. assessment in addition to special missions: JCXi and ASP missions provided constant protection against the possibility of enemy air or submarine action, although no contacts were made.

'rhe performance of the 20!'Ii''I gun throughout the Air Group has been excellent. The maintenance procedures as outlined in~OP 1910 are being used and have uroven effective. Onerating temperatures have been as low as 300 below zero with no ill effects uuon the operation of the 2m~~ quns. The cold weather lubricants have made a-marked increase in the operating efficiency.

Breakage of breech block. locks, breech block sli~es, and _, magazine slide back plate screws has occurred in some 20!>·1111 guns

installed en the F9F-2 which have fired g to 10 thousand rounds. However, replacing breech block locks and slides aftBr every ,25 thousand rounds and making routi:r:J.e checks after every 6 hundred was held stopnakes to a minimum. F~ur extra guns were maintained ~. in a ready state by both jet squadrons to reulace broken guns in returning aircraft en short notice. Four additional guns were maintained to perrr.it exchanging of an entire gun assembly on the fli£;ht deck v.,rhen guns were due for routine cheok. This procedure permitted work to be done on the guns. on the hangar dBok ~r in a ~heltered armory away from the coid weather. ~

One accidental firing of an F2H-2 20I\·:;}1 gun on the fligh~ deck occurred as a result of a broken breech block locking sear partially jamming the gun before the locking sear had been en~aged and after a failure of air pressure while taxiing out of 'he arresting gear after an arrested landing.

-

A new type plastic muzzle cover is now being used to eliminate moisture entering the muzzle. An apureciable decrease in. broken gun parts has been noted. Stress on short bursts of fire rather than extended firing, has haloed decre3.se gun troubles.

b. BOIJ3S

Co~siderable trouble has been encountered with the MK 55 bomb rack during cold weather operations. I\;,oisture collects in the release solen~id and freezes with a restiltant inoPerative rack and hung bomba This malfunction was especially prevalent.the first flight after a non-operating day and occurred most frequently~ in racks mounted on the starb&3rd wing where the epenings on the rack were UP when the wings were folded. This problem has been solved by ciea~ing the release solenoid nlunger 9nd lubricatin~ tte core of the solenoid with 6old weather grease Prescribed in 01111 GVl$-51 for feed mechanism lubri,~ati~n and the other moving parts of the rack withE-51 gun ..-,11. It was found.that hung bombs caused by frozen release solenoids could.be dropned by keeping the elect~ical circuit to the rack close& up· to two minutes thereby generating heat in the solenoid to ~elt the ice •

suppression missions. The T-91 fuze, has given excellent results ·, - .but the T-9_0 fuze has not 'Oerfo:.~med satisfactorily.

Sway braces for the EK 55 bo!Tlb rack installe::d on the F9F-2, . after being modified have given satisfactory service under heavy usage of the 250 pound G.P. bomb.. The modific7ttion c_onsisted of welding pieces of sto~k shaped to the curvat~re of the 250 nound G.P. bomb to the original sway braces, thereby producing a lopger, more effective sway_brace.

The Aero 14 A bomb and ro~ket iauncher installed on the F2H-2 is moderately satisfactory. :tl~Dc?ated difficulty was exnerienced in rel<:::asing 500 uo.und G. P. bombs at high speeds. l'~ost failures were at speeds of 375 to 450 knots. No bombs were returned to :the ship but as high as 20% of those carried would release only at slower speeds. It was found that the bomb c6uld usually be released in a run if a slight negative liQH force was applied at the moment of release •. It annears that the releasing so··_enoid might not be strong enough to DrGperly release 500 pound bombs at high speeds. All launchers were checked for releasing a~tion en deck and were found to function n'rmally before and after each flight ..

\ . c~ RCCK~TS

Rocket pigtails still break but to lessen this trouble on the F2H-2 an added bracket was built-and installed ort-the four outboard launchers with notches to shiD the nigtail after the pigtail was Plugged in.

At tha end of four (4) 1')2riod,s of operations in the combat area, the pilot factor of 1.5 for squadrons daployed is b2li2.ved· to be realistic in view of the losses sustained and the average number of sorties required by current ooerating Plans. ~t this point, additional losses would in all probability necessitate the requirement of reDlacement pilots, which would be considered undesirable in view cf the time reauired to integra~e new oilots into the taams (}f the squs.drons. It is strongly recommer.ded that the 1.5 oilot factor remain in eff0ct for all squadrons in order that sustained opers.tional comrnittments may be met.

The follovving is a breakdown of combs.t Dilot casualties suffered by Air Group duriLg the o~riod 22 August 1951 to 31 January 1952;

The fourth combat p2riod for Carri3r Air Grouu FIIR in the operat:Lrig area ~nds with the rr,ajor effort b(dng piaced on

r interdiction of cncrr.y lines of ccr.1r:mnication,.

Operatin~ ~rocedures of the Air Group have not chPn~ed to any gr2at extent but tta methcds of conductin~ the interdiction urogram ta're been revised sine e this "~ir Groun first entered thg combat area last ~ugust. The rail cutting urogram has been continued throughout this neriod but instead of cutting track over a wide arei, tha conc~pt has bee~ to meke concent~atad breaks in one socticn of track for sev~r~l mi2s. It is believJd that by this method the enemy will be u~able to m~ka renairs readilyo Tha effectiveness of this program is e~emnlified by the fact that no rail traffic tas moved ever the target route, Kowe~1 to ',':on s::m, sin.2e tb; prcgre,m 'da s initiated 18 J an:.:ary.

Key brid~es and by-uasses·ware also assi~nad as Drimary t::;rgets on the ~3ast-·flast rail rou-:.es E'<lJng -"'·'ith the eastern railroqdo Bridge targets are h~~vily protected by anti-aircraft emplacements. The groun has continu~d to use the coordinated attacks for fiak ~uonression on these targets with excellent results.

Two F2H-2P ohcto aircraft were ordered to this gtoup during the operating n~riod and wcr2 found to be a great imorovement over the F9F-2P because of the types of cameras installed. Th0 F2H-2P has cne (l) K-3g camera with a 36 inch focal length and

...... tvm ( 2) K-17 s, one with a 12 ir:Lch foc·al length 'and one T;ri th a 6-inch focal length. The F9F-2P has tw~ (2) K-17s with 12 inch focal length.

Fighter Squadron ~IFTY FOUR installed a K-17 camera with a 24 inch focal length in a wing n::tckage en thcl AD aircraft and has obtained excellent results for target assessment. This camera is a gre·t imorovement over the K-25 which is mostgenerally used for this type of work. i renort of construction and installation of th2 K-i7 camera package is being submitted by sep, rate corresDondence~

For the F2H-2s, the lack oT main landing gear wheels is becoming criticalo At nresent seven (7) wheels are anproaching the safety limits ~n~, if new wheels are not received in the near future 7 it is likely that the F2H-2s will become AOG.

Due te the large number of hits by anti-aircraft fire, and the type of repair necessary to repair the damage, lack of ':.he mere coml!lon metal extrusions is becoming anparent. N<' extrusicn~ common to the F2H-2s are in sto~k at present and it is recom!Tlended that a stock of extrusicns be maintained aboard shin such that more structural renairs ~an be accomplished thereby reducing tte number of st~uctural replaceme~ts necessary.
