C. TEACHING & ADVISING I have developed and taught courses at different levels in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Sultan Qaboos University. The courses span both theoretical and practical aspects of a fairly wide spectrum of areas within Electrical Engineering. My teaching technique can be summarized as follows: • Review my course outline in response to the requirements of the workplace and to include

the latest achievements and trends in the field. • Adopt innovative and improved ways in teaching and learning processes. • Adopt latest editions of the text books. • Strive to link theory with real-life applications. • Introduce up-to-date computer software that can help students in learning the material and

understanding the concepts. • Encourage students to participate in the discussions raised during class and to solve

problems on the board by allocation small percentage of the final grade to the class contribution. This is intended to contribute to the student’s communication abilities and skills.

• Encourage students to work in teams. • Arrange for industrial visits. In addition to teaching and curriculum development, I have also served as an academic advisor to large undergraduate students at SQU.

E.2 University Service

I was appointed as a Dean for the Deanship of Admission and Registration (Sept 2009-March 2014), my achievements during my work as a Dean can be summarized as follows:

1. I have noticed that the degree plans placed on the College Websites are different from that which are on Admissions & Registration site, so that students are misled as to which degree plans they should follow. Moreover, the format for the study plans through the university was not consistent which can create problems for some students who transferred from one college to another. I worked very hard with the Assistant Deans from all Colleges to standardize study and degree plans through the SQU. Currently, all Colleges in SQU are using the same format and the student can access the same degree/study plans form either the Deanship or College websites. The Vice Chancellor of SQU has appreciated our work in this regard.

2. I have a major contribution in finalizing Degree Audit Project which helps student, advisor and Deanship of A&R to see student’s progress automatically. This resulted in reducing the time taken by the Deanship to process students’ graduation. The accomplishment of this project was appreciated by all Colleges and SQU administration including the Vice Chancellor.

3. I have a major contribution in suggesting to SQU Academic Council several proposals to update the undergraduate academic regulations, such as General Transfer Criteria to SQU, Transfer Criteria between Colleges, Admission into SQU based on International Certificates¸ Annual Intake of Non-Omani Students for each College, Changing of University Requirements, Studying Abroad, Visiting International Students from Foreign Higher Educational Institutions, Re-admission after Required Withdrawal for Academic Reasons. All these proposals were approved by Academic and University Councils.

4. I have a major contribution in implementation of the foundation program and its regulations at SQU.

5. Implementing the electronic archiving, as well as the implementation of the queuing system in the Deanship.

6. Improving the admission process of newly admitted students by employing the idea of one station in which the students are obtaining their university card, bank account number and thumbprint signature from one place in a short period of time.

7. Implementing several services on line, such as Vice Chancellor Dash Board, transfer request, registration waiting list, and GPA Calculator. Furthermore, new projects are in the pipeline such as warning/barring notices, on-line course loading sheet and timetabling
