Schedule.
This schedule includes course listings for the Basic Police Academy and
Continued Professional Training (CPT) programs as well as training in
driving skills, firearms, security, first aid, motorcycle skills and other public
safety-related areas.
The course schedule also features contact information for program
coordinators in each of the training areas. Please feel free to call or email

The mission of the Public Safety Center of Excellence is to provide your
agency with training that prepares your officers to be successful and safe in

DESCRIPTION: Tri‐C’s Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission (OPOTC)- certified

is also open to individuals who have been sworn with a department
and need to complete their Peace Officer Basic Training (Basic
Police Academy). This paramilitary-structured academy includes all
of the training mandated by OPOTC. Additional certifications in the
following areas: Taser Operator Certification, and Active Shooter

Dispatch Communications

DESCRIPTION: This twelve week course consists of classroom and hands-on
training, including keyboarding and listening and responding to
actual 911 and non- emergency calls. Covering the basic skills,
knowledge and abilities every successful public safety dispatcher
needs to meet the demands of this critical work.
Building on foundational topics such as communication skills, call-
taking and radio techniques, the course incorporates the most up-
to-date information on technology and work- related issues in
public safety communications centers.
Hands-on training consists of keyboarding, listening and
responding to actual 911 and non-emergency calls; skill- building
exercises in listening, multitasking, information gathering and
decision making; entering calls using computer aided dispatching
(CAD); and dispatching and clearing calls.
OTHER INFORMATION: This course provides the training mandated by the State of Ohio
to prepare persons hoping to gain employment in the field of 911
dispatching.
Students who successfully pass the final exam receive certification
demonstrating completion of a training course that meets and
exceeds industry- accepted national basic training standards.

Corrections Academy

DESCRIPTION: This Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission training academy
fulfills the basic training requirement per AC Section 109:2-9-02(A)
for new or newly assigned correctional staff. Students will learn the
skills necessary to become a professional correctional officer.
Seven units of discussion include administration, legal, jail
security, human relations, medical overview, subject control
techniques and first aid/CPR/AED. There are written and practical
skill tests throughout. At the completion of this academy,
participants will be qualified to take the state exam.
Note: Workout clothing is necessary for subject control skills.

required hours of training for OPOTC Private Security Officer
Certification.

Police Physical Agility Exam

DESCRIPTION: The Police Officer Physical Agility Exam is conducted for
approximately 65 police departments in Northeast Ohio. This
exam measures participants’ fitness performance as it relates to
the law enforcement profession.
OTHER INFORMATION: A certificate of completion will be issued upon successful
completion of the exam. Participants are responsible for providing
the agency/agencies they are testing for with a copy of the
certificate. Test scores will be forwarded to the agency on the
participant’s behalf. Certificates and scores may be valid
for up to one year, depending on agency standards.

CPT Trauma-Informed Policing

DESCRIPTION: This interactive training addresses the need for an understanding
of trauma-informed approaches to those whom the community law
enforcement professional serves.
The goal of this training is to increase the understanding of
trauma, create an awareness of the impact of trauma on behavior
and help develop trauma-informed responses.
Participants will explore issues of vicarious trauma with the law
enforcement community and provide suggestions on how to
promote sustainable practices that may mitigate the
effects of vicarious trauma.

DESCRIPTION: Police and citizens often come into contact with one another for
reasons other than criminal investigation. In addition to enforcing
criminal law, police officers often engage in community service.
This may include providing information and/or assistance to
people in need, as well as offering youth education and
coordinating community outreach efforts. In many communities,
police officers network to establish partnerships between residents
and the law enforcement agency. Community- oriented policing
seeks to address the causes of crime and to reduce fear of social
disorder through problem solving strategies and police-community
partnerships. It typically involves a greater use of foot and bicycle
patrols and frequent meetings with community groups.

Advanced Defensive- Training for LEO's

DESCRIPTION: This course will consist of a safe but vigorous cardio endurance
workout before performing tactical techniques when using subject
control tactics. Officers will be tested on their physical ability to
perform in highly stressful and physical situations and
altercations.
Emphasis will be placed on breathing techniques while performing
different subject control techniques. Officers will utilize proper
force while maintaining controlled breathing and emotions while
limiting injury or death and keeping the warrior mindset.

OPOTC Peace Officer Refresher

DESCRIPTION: This training is required for persons reappointed as peace officers

prior to the start of class and will be required to take the state
exam at an OPOTC facility approximately two weeks after class

DESCRIPTION: This eight-hour course provides officers with the opportunity to
develop the skills needed to maneuver their patrol vehicles with
speed, precision and agility on a dedicated tarmac pad, passing
through a series of coned work stations. These activities require
repeated and tightly-timed runs, with lessons in proper steering
techniques, acceleration, right and left turns, ABS and threshold
braking in an emergency situation and operating the vehicle in
reverse, while maneuvering around obstacles on a simulated
curving roadway.

Traffic Collision Investigation Intermediate

DESCRIPTION: This 24-hour course is designed to expand the investigative skills
of the basic patrol officer. This course will help the basic patrol
officer investigate an accident scene when a technical investigator

diagramming the collision scene.

Combat Pistol

DESCRIPTION: This three day immersion hammers marksmanship and weapons
handling skills. Not for beginners, Combat Pistol combines the
essentials of marksmanship with the principles of combat
shooting and places them into a hierarchy of necessity and
importance. Training is focused on a mastery of the basics in a
highly diagnostic fashion. Master the critical aspects of muscular-
skeletal alignment, platform, pistol presentation, modern grip,
and trigger management. Common misconceptions regarding
shooting and useless dogma is addressed.
Special Concerns: Combat Pistol is a fast-paced program that is
physically demanding with extensive amounts of shooting and
weapon manipulation. Full focus and attention to detail is
completely necessary. When on the range, you’ll be occupied
loading magazines and taking notes between shooting drills.

DESCRIPTION: Advanced shooters have mastered the basics and can perform
them at speed and under stress. This course is designed to
develop those basics as they apply to the AR15. A high level
understanding combined with skill proficiency is what you gain
from this training. Training covers accesories, handling and
essential skills and advanced shooting drills. This course will cover
techniques commonly used in urban and rural environments.
Training is based on essential principles that increase speed,
accuracy and confidence with the carbine.

OPOTA qualification course.

DESCRIPTION: This classroom and hands-on training course is focuses on tactical
speed shooting, development of aggressive gun-handling skills,
and dynamic action while deploying the semi-automatic pistol.
The concepts of dominating the weapon, threat, and all visual
areas while continuously moving will be emphasized throughout
the class. Students will develop reflexive gun handling skills that
will enable them to quickly and efficiently engage threats while
performing multiple complex tasks. Students will also learn and
practice flanking moves while drawing and acquiring deadly force
threats and scanning for additional threats.
Students should be in good physical condition, familiar with their
equipment and have a solid gun-handling skill established prior to
attending this firearms training course.
OTHER INFORMATION: This is not an open enrollment course. Participants must be
sponsored by an agency or be a Military Veteran.
Students should use their own firearms, holsters which must be
fitted to your gun, extra magazines or speed loaders, flashlight or
gun mounted light and at least 300 rounds of target ammunition
(NO STEEL CORE).
You may also rent a Glock Model 17 9mm pistol for the class for
$5.00 but must supply your own ammunition.
Proper clothing comparable to duty clothing, including proper
footwear, trouser belt and duty belt with keeper and baseball caps.
Eye and hearing protection must be used – students can bring their
own or the range will furnish them.

Police Urban Mountain Bicycle

DESCRIPTION: The Police Urban Mountain Bicycle Techniques Course is physically
and mentally demanding. This training combines Emergency
Vehicle Operations for bike officers with patrol procedures, tactics,
night operations, scenarios, and basic bike maintenance and on-
the-road repairs. Learn to ride like a pro, avoid crashes, and use
your bike to foil the bad guys every time. Off- road riding and bike-
specific live-fire exercises may be added at the instructor’s
discretion.
Participants must attend all class dates and pass all examinations
to be awarded the Certificate of Completion.

DESCRIPTION: This course prepares students to write and present lesson plans in
a law enforcement setting. Topics include instruction in the
theories of adult education, teaching techniques, and lesson plan

problem learners; and training aid usage.
This is an academically challenging course merging theory and
practice. Participants are required to develop and present a 15-
minute lesson plan, a 30-minute lesson plan and a 45-minute
course of instruction using a prepared commission basic training

Participants should bring resource materials and requisite props
to create and conduct instruction in a law enforcement cognitive
or psychomotor skills area. There is classwork to be completed

DESCRIPTION: The Advanced Rider Skills (ARS) course complements an
experienced rider’s basic skills and helps with personal risk
assessment. It includes a fast-paced classroom segment with
interactive activities to improve perception and hazard awareness.
Range exercises enhance both basic and crash avoidance skills.
Improving braking and cornering finesse are emphasized.
ARS starts in a small-group, discussion- oriented classroom

Must be a minority and/or female.

Student will not be accepted into any public safety program or
awarded scholarship funding if they have an outstanding debt with
the college.
