Our Understanding of Your Needs

As we start our conversations with you, our intent is to partner with you in order to gain a clear understanding of Elbit Systems of America’s strategic goals and specific development needs of the various cohorts. Based on our previous discussions, you are exploring opportunities to further develop Rannan’s team after participating in the Gettysburg Leadership Experience. The team’s development may be more focused on exploring strategic intent and a shared vision/mission. Additional areas of improvement and focus could be: creating a sense of urgency, building engagement and passion within the organization, building “smart trust” in teams, improving the culture and creating a mindset for innovation and ownership. This document will start to outline how our Apollo Leadership Experience and Storytelling Leadership Experience are applicable to this team. Fine-tuning the critical leadership challenges and the learning focus will become more apparent through continued discussion and analysis. Once you have had the chance to review this document and speak with Rannan, the next step will be drawing out additional high-level learning objectives for your audience. After these conversations, we will work with you to create a compelling and meaningful Leadership Experience with application to Elbit Systems of America.

As our discussion progresses, we will further refine the program objectives and focus so that your Leadership Experience is specific and applicable to the growth and continued development of the cohorts and organization.

We will continue to work with your teams to shape the program and help you tackle critical issues, overcome obstacles, and move your organization forward.

Why We are Different

It’s About You No two programs are the same. We partner with you to understand your challenges and priorities. Then, we customize the program with you to meet your objectives.

A Portfolio of Offerings Each of our programs look at leadership through a unique lens. We’ll support you as you choose which program is right for you and customize it to meet your objectives.

Emphasis on Experiences Human beings are wired to make sense of the world through stories. By immersing yourself in successes and failures of other leaders, you gain new perspectives.

Focus on Practical Leadership While our team is deep in organizational theory, that’s not where we focus. Our intent is to help you discover and develop practical approaches to real leadership issues.

A Different Level of Conversation We don’t use PowerPoint and we don’t do “training.” Our programs expose you to people and perspectives you wouldn’t ordinarily encounter. We raise the level of discussion.

How We are Different

Registration is Painless Say no to never-ending spreadsheets. Working with us means using our custom registration portal to make your life easier.

Seamless Planning Our team supports you the way you want. We will book and manage all vendors, make arrangements at the hotel, and coordinate travel during your program so you don’t have to worry about a thing.

Two Facilitators Don’t wait for a follow-up classroom program to get the real value. Our team of Facilitators not only take you through the riveting stories, but guide leadership dialogue to begin application right away. Dedicated On-Site Logistics Manager

If your people know how complex the logistics are then something has gone wrong. Every experience has a dedicated on-site logistics manager on the ground running all the plays.

Unmatched Customer Service We, above all, are dedicated to making your experience incomparable and will go the extra mile every time to make sure that happens.

How We Design Your Leadership Experience We firmly believe that history has a lot to teach us and so do our peers and predecessors. As such, we have not reinvented the process of program design. We use the ADDIE Model, which is a fairly simple process when it comes to program design. We leave the unique methodology to our content and program locations.

Analysis: This phase begins with our initial encounter with you and continues up to the day of the program. The analysis phase helps us understand your leaders’ environment, current knowledge base, and experience. It helps clarify the development goal or desired capability.

Questions we will cover with you will include:

o Who is the audience and what is driving the need for development? o Is there a competency model or business drivers that should be integrated? o What is your learning culture? Directive? Discovery based? o What other curriculum or training is being organized for the group? o What are the delivery options, constraints, and timelines for execution?

Design: This phase begins shortly after the analysis phase. Here we will begin to sketch out a program concept with you. This will detail our understanding of your objectives through the analysis we’ve done with you.

Elements that we will discuss during this phase include:

o Programs we recommend and how they fit into the overall objectives for the cohort o Suggestions for new (or understanding of existing) assessments or surveys of the cohort o Are there tailored elements that should be integrated into the agenda?

Development: We will focus on your objectives and challenges during this last critical step before implementation.

This phase entails:

o Embedding your Competency Model into the program design o Interviewing key leaders and executive sponsors o Implementing leadership surveys or assessments o Potential site-visit to choreograph facilitation and program elements

Implementation: This is where we actually get to see all of our hard work pay off as participants begin their journey. The experience leverages physical, mental, and emotional elements to generate results and embed learning. If requested, action-learning projects are incorporated into the program delivery.

Evaluation: We will seek feedback from you throughout the process and ask participants to fill out Level 1 evaluations, as well. We can partner with you to design formal assessments based on participant’s or the cohort’s overall development or strategic plans.

Overview of Learning Objectives: Apollo Leadership Experience

This program is delivered utilizing a leadership study model: participants will explore a story, the leaders involved and surrounding circumstances, then uncover the underlying leadership lesson that drove the results. Participants will then be guided through a dialogue around application of those lessons to their own leadership, team environment, and organizational goals. Some leadership studies focus on individual leadership outcomes while others are team or organizationally focused.

You Will Discover How To:

o Assess your leadership to play to your strengths

o Articulate a clear picture of success to help your team work toward a common goal

o Use the five attributes of Adaptive Leadership to lead in a rapidly changing environment

o Cultivate a sense of urgency around the enterprise

o Prepare for unexpected, high-stakes moments that call for decisive action

Your Team Will Discover How To:

o Create a culture of innovation to drive both radical and incremental innovation o Work together to compensate for weaknesses and play to strengths o Empower members to communicate “the technical truth,” even if that means delivering

bad news o Understand when to “step up” and “step back” to bring out each member’s leadership

abilities and optimize team capability

Your Organization Will Be Better Equipped To:

o Establish an adaptive culture to enable your organization to endure over time

o Cope with a climate of uncertainty in which resources, challenges, and priorities are constantly changing

o Gain new sense of passion around the organization

Leadership Studies and Learning Objectives

In partnership with you, we will develop a customized agenda based on your specific learning objectives and the areas of focus for Rannan’s team. Below, please find a summary of the primary leadership studies with details on the history and the learning objectives at each site.

Additional leadership studies are integrated into the core of the program. Listed below is a selection of the potential studies we may explore. Once we understand the parameters for his group, we will develop an agenda tailored to Elbit Systems of America’s specific learning objectives.

You will choose from the below studies to customize your Leadership Experience:

President John F. Kennedy Leadership Study: Nurturing the Vision President John F. Kennedy’s famous statement “of landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to the Earth” is often cited as an example of an inspiring vision. This module explores how leaders can create clarity of purpose to achieve business objectives.

Leadership Insights:

o Describe how a clear common purpose can be used to overcome insurmountable odds and engage employees in “the mission”

o Describe the characteristics of a passionate, driven leader o Create a purpose statement the team or organization

James Webb Leadership Study: Managing Leadership Strengths and Gaps James Webb was NASA’s second Administrator whom led the organization for almost a decade. This module looks at how he built and organized his top management team to allow him to play to his strengths and manage his leadership gaps.

Leadership Insights:

o Describe how leaders can assess their leadership strengths and gaps o Describe how James Webb played to his strengths and addressed his leadership

gaps through recruitment and organizational design, avoiding the “Dunning-Kruger” effect

o Assess their leadership strengths and gaps and plan ways to address those gaps

Page 11: Custom Leadership Experiences · Storytelling Leadership Experience 13 Investment Options and Formats 18 Client Testimonials 19 Partial Client List 20 . 516.554.5599 3 Our Understanding

516.554.5599 www.experiencetolead.com 11

Wernher von Braun Leadership Study: Adaptive Leadership The story of how Wernher von Braun led his team of scientist out of the ashes of a defeated Germany as POWs to become the core of U.S. rocket development is probably history’s best example of adaptive leadership.

Leadership Insights:

o Describe the difference between technical and adaptive leadership o Understand the characteristics of an adaptive leader o Discuss how to model the characteristics of adaptive leadership to create opportunities

The Lunar Excursion Module: Innovation Innovation is often thought of as a “eureka moment.” The story of how the LEM was created by Grumman shows how a leader can create a culture where innovation happens every day.

Leadership Insights:

o Describe how a culture that accepts failure can accelerate innovation o Assess the progress of a current innovation project or initiative o Identify strategies to improve innovation in their role

Apollo 1 Situational Analysis: Leading from Setbacks The Apollo 1 fire was a huge setback for the American space program. The module explores how George Low and others lead NASA back from the brink and on to a string of successes.

Leadership Insights:

o Use the environmental scan as a way to assess leadership “hot spots” after a setback o Describe how George Low lead the effort to get everyone back on track after Apollo 1 o Identify the leadership characteristics needed to lead after a setback and create a

resilient team

Arnie Aldrich Leadership Study: Leaders Teaching Leaders Arnie Aldridge was Director of the Space Shuttle Program for eight years. Arnie tells how, as a

junior engineer in Apollo, he learned to lead from watching the great NASA leaders like

George Low. We apply this learning to identify how we can develop better leaders.

Leadership Insights:

o List ways leaders teach and develop other leaders o Plan possible actions they could take to better develop others

Page 12: Custom Leadership Experiences · Storytelling Leadership Experience 13 Investment Options and Formats 18 Client Testimonials 19 Partial Client List 20 . 516.554.5599 3 Our Understanding

516.554.5599 www.experiencetolead.com 12

Apollo 8 Situational Analysis: Risk Management (Kennedy Space Center Module) Initial plans called for testing the lunar and command module components of the Apollo

spacecraft first before striking out for the moon, but NASA heard rumors that the Russians were

planning a crewed mission to lunar orbit. NASA decided to send the Apollo 8 command

module alone around the moon, without a lunar module backup if something were to go

wrong. This case study looks at how business risks can be anticipated and managed using a

simple tool.

Leadership Insights:

o Describe the importance of assessing and managing business risks o Describe how the Bow Tie tool can be used to anticipate and mitigate risks o Apply the Bow Tie tool to a current work initiative or situation

Apollo 11 Situational Analysis: Stepping Up or Stepping Back Most leaders love to lead – it’s their natural inclination. Former Prime Minister Tony Blair holds that the best leaders know when to step back and let others lead. This module uses footage from the Apollo 11 landing to show how great leaders know when to step back.

Leadership Insights:

o Describe an example of a leader “stepping up” to lead or “stepping back” to enable others to lead

o List criteria to consider when deciding whether to lead or enable others o Identify current situations where they should lead more strongly or enable others

Apollo 13 Situational Analysis: Crisis Leadership Apollo 13 has been called “NASA’s successful failure.” The success was the result of the leadership of Gene Kranz, James Lovell and others. This case study explores the specific leadership behaviors that created success - behaviors that every executive can use to lead.

Leadership Insights:

o Cite examples of Lovell’s leadership behaviors with his crewmates o Cite examples of Kranz’s leadership behaviors with the Mission Control staff o Explain the importance of goal clarity and how leaders adjust their style in crisis

Mission Debrief: Applying Your Learning The closing work session is customized for each group to ensure the application and link from history and the Space Race to their current business environment, specific leadership challenges or strategy. The action planning process may include insights on delivering performance through different lenses – including organizational, sociological, psychological and more.

Leadership Studies and Learning Objectives

You will choose from the below to customize your Storytelling Experience: Image-Based Story Prompts Participants will develop their capacity for visual thinking and experience the deep ways it can

enhance their awareness of their own stories. Participants discover stories they didn’t know

they knew, simply by drawing from a series of visual metaphors that help prompt “lateral

leaps,” or new connections between ideas that were previously unrelated. Image prompts are

notable for their ability to deliver deep story insights with remarkable speed.

“Living Stories” Telling Exercise An especially rich methodology for story sharing, “living stories” is an emergent process that is

effective for “bubbling up” stories in larger groups. One of the very rich outcomes of this

process is that every participant’s voice is heard and they are able to see where their story fits

into the context of the larger story that they are all living together.

Story Mining Exercise: Visual Timeline or Hero’s Journey Leaders, at all levels, are tasked with aligning teams and moving them towards the future. And

the most compelling way to articulate that future is by telling a story about it. In this fast-

moving and fun exercise, participants will use visual thinking resources to define the journey

towards a desired future. The power of this exercise is in the surprising insights that it delivers.

Drawing from the classic “Hero’s Journey” archetype, leaders will explore a construct for

inviting their teams and organizations into a story of organizational change.

The Four Core Stories Leaders will consider the opportunities for purposeful and strategic storytelling. Participants

will encounter many examples of organizational story for a broader vision of the many ways

stories can work. Leaders will begin to identify, craft, and practice telling the “core stories” of

their work: identity, vision, values, and learning.

Story Element Extraction & Mental Models Developed by knowledge management pioneers at IBM, this active exercise will help leaders extract the mental models that are buried within the stories they tell. They will analyze the larger patterns of meaning that span across stories, and come away with surprisingly rich insights about the organization, the brand, or the marketplace.

Page 17: Custom Leadership Experiences · Storytelling Leadership Experience 13 Investment Options and Formats 18 Client Testimonials 19 Partial Client List 20 . 516.554.5599 3 Our Understanding

516.554.5599 www.experiencetolead.com 17

Energizer Storytelling: Relics Participants will share stories drawn from their private lives. Together, they will debrief the role of the “personal in the professional” and the impact of bringing our “whole selves” to work.

Data, Metaphor, & Storytelling Scientists, engineers, technologists, and other data experts are often very effective in communicating with one another, but challenged in presenting their complex messages to people outside of their circles. Story, metaphor, and visual thinking are powerful tools for making complex messages easier to grasp. In this session, leader will review some best practices from Apple Computer and other “messaging masters” and then work on one of their actual messaging decks to present it with more clarity and impact.

Customer Empathy Storyboarding Using simple images, icons, and metaphors, leaders can render key processes and strategic initiatives in a visual format. Informed by movie screenwriting techniques, storyboarding has become a popular way to visualize customer experiences, strategic initiatives, project plans, and more. This will lead to increased empathy of the customer, and increased clarity of the message that your organization should craft to engage customers more deeply. Break Out Groups: Case Study Participants will be grouped into small groups, and tasked with preparing a 10-minute customer presentation to be judged by a panel of internal leaders. Each team must include at least one of the following story elements in their presentation: A personal story, a need or negative perception, a critical data message, and the values of the company.

Moving Forward: An Exploration of Next Steps In this open dialogue, leaders will reflect on their own future application of story in their work.

We will answer their questions on how to make the work most successful, how to build their

own storytelling habits, and how to focus the work so that it generates a tangible return for the

organization.

Client Testimonials

“The Gettysburg Leadership Experience allowed our team to focus on the impact of working together to create a common outcome. As a senior leader, at some point you need to look beyond your specific function and individual objectives and focus on the common outcome. The case studies, facilitated discussions and action planning established at Gettysburg supported our efforts to manage problems and make commitments as a team.” - Roger Sparr, Chief of Staff, Michelin North America Truck Tires

“Having attended [the Leadership Experience], I was keen to share the power of a leadership experience with our global management team …. I plan to make some immediate changes to our leadership structure and to our planning process to implement some of the lessons we learned; beyond that I am going to ask a small team to continue the work we started [at the Leadership Experience.] - Devin Wenig, President, eBay

“The lessons learned from [the Leadership Experience] reconfirmed for me that effective strategy and execution are key, as are enabling and empowering teams, active leadership by example, and creating an environment to succeed.” - Katharina Auer, Head of Global Internal Communications, Corporate Affairs, AstraZeneca

“[The Leadership Experience] was truly a unique experience in learning: learning about leadership, decision making, recognizing opportunities, creating environments for you and others to be successful, the importance of clear communication and understanding as well as team "buy-in" towards objectives.” - Odell Guyton, Director of Compliance, Senior Corporate Attorney, Office of Legal Compliance, Legal & Corporate Affairs, Microsoft Corporation

“I gained valuable insights into how to deal more effectively with subordinate managers; specifically, the importance of adapting my own communication style, depending upon the needs of each of my managers. I learned that a transformational leader will understand the specific needs of key subordinates. Some will perform better only when provided with detailed direction, others want and need much more general direction and will perform better by applying personal judgment and initiative. “ - Graham Cooke, VP Franchise Development and Facilities, A&W Food Services of Canada, Inc.
