The Tidings February & March 2016 A newsletter of Central Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity Thank you to all of you who could join us for the annual meeting. Here is my reprinted report: Pastor Cindy (Reprinted from the Pastor’s Annual Report 2015) First off, thank you, dear people of Central, for: your continued commitment to ministry here, for your attendance at worship, for your generous pledges which keep us doing what we both are called to do and dream of doing in this place and out in the world. A few highlights of this year include: In March, I used continuing education funds to attend an Emotional Intelligence Training. The most valuable piece of that was a survey in which people could rate me and my effectiveness as a leader. The survey included confidential answers from our church staff, key leaders, peers and synod staff. I initiated this as a sort of self- evaluation and learned much, both in terms of effectiveness and places to grow. In April, I attended the bishop’s convocation at Semiahmoo. There was joint worship with this region’s Episcopalian pastors and time spent learning with pastoral colleagues. Your church council held its annual April retreat on the theme “People of Vision”. We spent some time in the sanctuary, quietly to ourselves, to envision what we see, hear, feel, and smell, imagining we are a first time visitor to our church. New paraments got on our wish list David De Block and I attended a June “tool box for leaders” conference where we learned about TAG, a visioning process for churches. I recommended we spend some of our grant “vision” money on this and council leaders are considering it. We were delighted to host Bishop Kirby Unti for Pride Sunday this year, and especially pleased that he and Kim and friends joined Central in the parade. We hired José De Los Santos to be custodian in addition to Steve Scheurich. José resigned November 1 st for full time employment elsewhere. Steve now limits his hours to ordering community lunch supplies. To fill those gaps, we hired NW Cleaning (owner Mark Madeoy, and custodian “Van”) to do INSIDE cleaning (approximately 10 hours) and Bradley Finn to do 5 hours of building and grounds work on Sundays. We recently found out that David De Block will be moving out of the church apartment and relinquishing his duties as caretaker mid-February. We are in the process of finding a replacement for David. Thank you to Personnel Committee Cathy Woods and Andrew Oberdeck and building committee liaison Karen Sy for helping to craft a new job description with 4 major areas of responsibility for our caretaker: security, building use and maintenance, light custodial duties, and grounds and yardwork. continued on page 3...

This fall for Rally Sunday, your church council hosted a conversation/potluck regarding leadershipgoals and roles and facilitated small group discussions in four major areas: Worship, Education,Community, and Outreach. We have been functioning with a smaller council this year. Thismeeting attracted two new council members, Brooke Powers and Carl Kaiser, to serve the terms ofthose who left.

Two students were confirmed on Reformation Sunday this year: Willa Brunsman Barnett and AnnaKiem.

Central celebrated it’s 125th Anniversary on the first Sunday in November (All Saint’s Sunday).Over 150 people attended worship that Sunday, including Mayor Ed Murray, Speaker FrankChopp, Rep. Brady Walkinshaw, and of course, Senator Jamie Pedersen who invited them all. Many thanks to council members Chris Kealy and Juni Nelson and others who helped us plan andcelebrate this special day.

This year marked the 45th anniversary of women’s ordination in the ELCA. In December, we were the destination for the gun violence prevention march from Temple

DeHirsch Sinai to honor National Gun Violence Prevention Weekend.

Central Lutheran Church maintains its identity in the community as a place where people care about socialjustice. I preached more sermons on racism this year than any other (many Sundays it seemed, followedincidents of gun violence, mass killings, or racially motivated killings). We maintain our integrity as aLutheran Church, but we are open to new ideas and change as church in our day and time continues tochange.

Thank you to those of you who have served Central this year in some capacity, whether it be your time andtalents as council leader, worship assistant, Sunday School teacher/helper, forum leader, march partici-pant, committee member or signing up for coffee hour!

The property committee has been working diligently lately on many projects, the latest of which you’ll bevoting on today. The installation of the back parking lot fence and the security camera system has made ita safer place to be caretaker. Thank you all for your hard work!

Thank you to Pastor Verlon. This has been a tough year of physical recovery and healing for you, yet yourcommitment to ministry in this place is remarkable. Thank you to the rest of the staff, small as we are, forall the juggling you do every day to support Central’s ministry.

I continue to be privileged to be your partner in ministry.

Peace and Blessings,

Pastor Cindy Salo

News from Church Council

Reprinted from the Council Annual Report 2015

Members: Chris Kealy- President, Andrew Oberdeck- Vice President, Kari Oversee-Choi- Secretary,Erica Hieggelke, Jerry Hekkel, Wayne J., Juni Nelson, Carl Kaiser and Brooke Powers.

We had a great start to the Council year with new members who brought great energy and skills toyour Council. In our initial election, Erica Hieggelke was elected our Council President without a Co-President. During our April meeting we elected Chris Kealy as Co-President to share the responsi-bilities of leading the Council for the rest of 2015. During the course of the year, Brooke Powers, CarlKaiser and Andrew Oberdeck joined us on Council to fill vacant positions.

Our annual retreat was held in April in the Parish Hall under the creative and very organized guid-ance of Erica Hieggelke. Among other activities, we walked through our sanctuary and tried to see itthrough the eyes of someone newly visiting our church. We talked about our hopes and discussedour concerns as well as those activities that make us proud to be a part of this small, but mightycongregation. Ultimately, we agreed on some assignments and deliverables for our 2016 Council, including a refresh of Central’s website, a potential video production with some of our youth, recruit-ing new council members in 2016, working on an action plan for our benevolences, and finding waysto support our strong spirit of social justice and advocacy. In addition, we remain open to creatingpartnerships with additional building partners who share our values and our vision for a more justand caring community and world.

Following the departure of several council members around the middle of the year, we sensed theneed for a broader, transparent discussion within Central concerning Central’s role (and the Council’srole specifically) in empowering the congregation to use its collective and individual gifts to nurtureand sustain our community and ourselves. To that end, we held a conversational potluck on Rally Dayin September following worship. The theme for our potluck was “Sustainability.” Although difficult attimes, the conversation was open and honest. As Council discerned the feedback from this conver-sation, four core values emerged: Worship, Education, Outreach, and Community. We believe it isvital to continue this conversation through 2016 and beyond, and we believe that identifying thesefour core values will guide us through this ongoing process.

One of the highlights of the year was our 125th Anniversary celebration held on All Saints Sunday inNovember. A small committee composed of members from Council (Chris and Juni), Worship (AnneBush), Choir (Jonna Farley), David De Block (CIM) and Jackie Brolsma (coordinator of the 120th) workedon invitations, gathered memorabilia and coordinated the celebration details. We invited formerPastors, past and present members, and the Mayor to come and celebrate our rich history together. In true Central fashion we started the celebration with 125 candles and singing at church followed byan amazing potluck of appetizers after worship.

As we begin 2016, we will continue to work on the deliverables identified during our annual retreat, and building on our core values of Worship, Education, Outreach, and Community.

Chris Kealy, Council President (October-December), Erica Hieggelke, Council President (February-September) and Andrew Oberdeck, Council Vice-President

Lent at Central

Lenten SojournersThe Journeying begins Wednesday February 17th

The last couple of years Central members have gone on a Lenten Sojourn. We traveled to multiplechurches and participated in various soup suppers & worship services. Some people attendedevery week and some people only joined us for one or two of the services. This year we’re going totry out meeting at one location to journey deeper into a relationship with another ministry in theSeattle area.

We’re going to partner with Gethsemane Lutheran Church (911 Stewart St., Seattle, WA 98101).Here are a few bits of information from them about what they’re planning:

Preparing the WayIn 2016, we will travel a path of renewal called “Lent” with increased attention to journey. To helpbring this home more deeply, Gethsemane and the Garden will offer regular opportunities forexploring the practices of walking a labyrinth and times of seated meditation.

Here are a couple of important notes:

Every Wednesday February 17th through March 16th (Except Wednesday February 24 whichis a field trip - a regular Lenten Service will be held Thursday February 25th) Lenten Serviceswill include soup, learning, & prayer. Wednesday February 24th is a SPECIAL field trip to hear Just Mercy author Bryan Stevensonspeak at First UMC. $32/person in advance. Scholarships via: [email protected] CENTRAL will be in charge of Soup & Bread on February 17th & March 3rd ([email protected] for details on how to sign up)

Join us for Ash Wednesday ServiceFebruary 10 at 7 pm

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of our Lenten observance. Thissomber service can be a powerful experience as we remind ourselves ofour mortality and commit ourselves to Lenten disciplines. Our servicewill be at 7 pm.

Central’s Theology Book Club

Our next Theology Book Group Gathering will be Thursday, February 18 at 6:30 pm in the

Upstairs Fireside Room in the Parish Hall at Central Lutheran. Discussion will start at 7 pm. Bring asack supper and/or snacks to share at 6:30 pm. This is an informal opportunity to build commu-nity with other Central folks through discussion of a theological book and how it relates to our faithand lives - both personally and in community. We hope to engage in intentional theological reflec-tion and dialogue, discerning anew our role as people of faith in community. We want to hear yourthoughts voiced! Contact Andrea Langeland and Theresa Wagner for more information.

On Thursday, February 18th we will discuss material from the first session of “Standing TogetherFor Human Dignity, Justice, Compassion & Wisdom," an interfaith dialogue series. Materials will beprovided.

On Thursday, March 17th we will discuss the new Jim Wallis book, “America's Original Sin:Racism, White Privilege, and the Bridge to a New America”. Contact Theresa Wagner if you wouldlike to join a group book order.

Holy Week at Central Lutheran, March 20-27

We hope you can join us for Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday, both wonderful, joyous celebrations ofworship. But if you want to experience the journey of Jesus that last week of his life and journeywith him to the cross, you will want to join us for all of the Holy Week worship opportunities hereat Central Lutheran.

Here is just a reminder of some of what happens at each service in case you are attending one forthe first time, or as a reminder of how we as participants of worship participate also in the acts ofJesus that first Holy Week:

Palm/Passion Sunday – We gather in the parish hall to bless palm branches and march in a cel-ebration of Christ’s entry into Jerusalem at the beginning of Holy Week. Palm Sunday servicealways starts with a celebration. We march into the church sanctuary and lay down our palmbranches. Then the tone of the service changes as we read the story of Christ’s passion and death(we hear Luke’s account of the passion on Passion Sunday this year and John’s version on GoodFriday).

Maundy Thursday – “Maundy” comes from the Latin for “commandment.” In this service, we readhow Jesus gives us a new commandment – to love one another. He demonstrates that love bywashing his disciples’ feet. There is a time at the beginning of the worship service to come to thealtar for forgiveness of sins and laying on of hands by the minister, and again near the end of theservice to share in communion. At the end of the service, the altar is stripped. Through this ritualwe recall that Jesus was abandoned by his followers, stripped of his dignity, and left to face thecross alone.

Good Friday – We read the passion according to John, celebrating Christ’s “victory” from the cross. We pray the ancient Bidding Prayer, offering petitions for the whole world. Finally a large cross iscarried in procession through the church as solemn reproaches are sung. Once the cross is placedin the altar area, worshippers may come and kneel at the altar or reverence the cross.

Easter Sunday – The high holy day of the Christian calendar! Come, bring your friends and family, and join us in the Feast of the Resurrection!

Blessings and Peace,

Pastor Cindy

Save the date for our annual fundraiser.

S P R I N G C A R N I V A L April 10th, 5pm – 8pm Swedish Cultural Club

Look for tickets and more information in early February. We hope you’ll join us!

Thank you so much to all the Central Lutheran volunteers who helped prep, cook and serve meals throughout the month of December! Community Lunch was open for meals throughout the holidays, cooking large Christmas Eve and Christmas day meals for our guests. As always, it was a pleasure to work alongside the Central Lutheran congregation!

The numbers are in! Community Lunch served 47,356 meals in 2015. With the addition of a fourth weekly meal (our Wednesday suppers) last February, we have increased our annual meal count by almost 10,000 meals.
