The rich opportunities available for creating useful systems in silicon are not only based on new ways of
computing and signal processing, but astonishing results are achieved by working with the
representation or coding of information as well. Mixing analog and digital, exploring time-domain
processing, stealing good ideas from biology may be combined, giving surprising results in
microelectronics.
My somewhat non-linear scientific carrier started with a sabbatical year at California Institute of
Technology working with Carver Mead (88/89) Carvers great vision of novel approaches to engineering
of microelectronics in now termed "Neuromorphic Engineering". The fascinating neural computation is
modeled in analog microelectronic systems using micropower design techniques. The implemented

biological inspired silicon has disclosed several “natural” computational properties usable in real
applications like cameras or cochlea implants.
Aiming at implementation of large bioinspired computational systems, a fundamental requirement is
storage of information or analog memory structures, preferably nonvolatile. Although capacitive storage
and hybrid techniques using digital structures are feasible, an interesting structure is the floating gate
MOS transistor. During the nineties significant efforts were made to bring forward floating gate circuits
for analog memory with moderate success. A side effect of this work was usage of floating gate circuit
elements in more traditional applications and tuning schemes for threshold shifting,
Novel computational methods in time-domain processing based on bio-inspired models or similar
modulation techniques have given interesting results. Most noticeable is the results from frequency
modulated delta-sigma converters. The FDSM concept is patented and is expected to be important as
the supply voltage is reduced. Recently time-domain processing is explored in Impulse Radio (UWB)
with good results for short-range wireless communication. Based on novel processing paradigm
micropower impulse radar came about and is currently spawning significant interest in hi-tech world-
leading companies. Our spin-off company Novelda AS (www.novelda.no) is exploring our impulse
radar technology commercially.
As past chair elect of IEEE BioCAS I have taken on the challenge of wireless sensor networks (WSN)
especially for biomedical engineering applications. Based on research collaboration with the Institute of
Biomedical Engineering at Imperial College in London, exciting new mixed-mode systems have been
designed for low-power interfacing. As microelectronics is strongly moving into biomedical
applications I was appointed the founding Editor-in-Chief of the new journal IEEE Transactions on
Biomedical Circuits and Systems. I am currently serving as Vice President of Conferences of the IEEE
Circuits and Systems Society.
