Year 2/3

English

During this term, students will be investigating the structure of recounts. Students will read, view and analyse a variety of recounts, with a focus on ‘My Place’ by Nadia Wheatley. Students will demonstrate their understanding of recounts by writing their own recount in the same style as ‘My Place’. The unit will also have links to HASS as student’s explore recounts from the past.

Mathematics

Students will engage in activities across the three areas of Mathematics; Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry and Statistics and Probability.

Assessment tasks this term will focus on the following areas:

Representing Addition and Subtraction – Students will use a range of strategies to solve problems involving addition and subtraction

Conducting A Chance Experiment –Students will collect data during an experiment and make statements relating to chance and probability.

Science

During Science this term, students will explore the needs of living things. Students will observe, record and compare the lifecycles of living things, with a specific focus on plants. They will investigate how science knowledge helps people to understand the effect of actions and they will use their experiences to identify questions that can be investigated scientifically and make predictions about scientific investigations. When carrying out experiments students will identify and use safe practices to make scientific observations and record data about living things and communicate their findings using scientific language.

Technology

‘What’s for lunch?’ In this unit, students investigate food and fibre production and food technologies used in modern and traditional societies. They design and make a lunch item that includes modern and traditional technologies.They explore how people in different times developed food and fibre technologies to meet human needs.

Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS)

'How has our community changed over time?’ is the driving question we will endeavour to answer during this term across HASS. Students will learn about the history of Nambour and history Nambour State College. They will compare daily life between today and daily life in the past and explain how change has occurred.

Health and Physical Education

During the term, students will practise and refine their swimming skills with a focus on the recognised strokes of freestyle,backstroke and breaststroke in multiple swimming sequences. They will examine the benefits of being healthy and physically active, and how they relate to swimming.

The Arts

Music

During Music lessons this term, students will describe and discuss similarities and differences between music they listen to, compose and perform. They will discuss how they and others use the elements of music in performance and composition.

HomeworkHomework will be sent home each Monday, along with their home readers. Homework is to be completed during the week and returned on a Friday. Students can keep track of their home reading using the reading log on the first page of their homework book. Alternatively students can read books from home or the school library. Homework will begin in Week 3.
