The most powerful feature of the SRI is its ability to administer fast and reliable low-stakes assessment to inform instruction and make accurate placement recommendations. Aligned to state tests, SRI helps educators forecast student achievement to those important goals

What is the Scholastic Reading Inventory and what does it measure?

The Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI) is a computer based reading assessment system. Students spend approximately 20-30 minutes 3 to 4 times a year reading passages and responding to questions. Test items include fiction, non-fiction and informational text. Passages require students to make inferences, draw conclusions, and demonstrate use of vocabulary knowledge in context; among other higher level thinking skills.

How are SRI scores expressed? What is a Lexile?

The score which students receive is expressed in Lexile numbers. Lexile is a unit of measurement for reading comprehension falling between 200 and 1700. Currently grades 2 and 4 have SRI pass rates. This means that students must be at a certain Lexile level in order to be promoted to the next grade. Second graders need at minimum a 300 Lexile and 4th graders need a 605 for promotion.How will teachers use this information?

SRI is a tool that school staff can use to provide information regarding a students current reading level, to monitor student progress, and to assist staff in planning for instruction. Lexile measures can also be used by teachers to understand the discrepancy between student comprehension skills and text difficulty. This information can help teachers provide differentiated and targeted skills instruction.

How can this information be helpful to parents?

SRI data can also assist parents in working with their children to select appropriate text for independent reading. Matching students to texts at appropriate levels helps to increase their confidence, competence, and control over the reading process.

How is a Lexile number calculated?

The Lexile formula does not take into account the maturity of the concepts covered in the book. The formula basically measures the length of sentences and complexity and frequency of words. It is strongly suggested that parents preview material and discuss reading material. For example, The adult book, The Firm written by John Grisham, and the childrens book, Charlotte s Web by E.B. White, both have a Lexile of 680.Where can I find more information about Lexiles?

Many book companies currently include Lexile numbers in their catalogues or on their websites. If you are shopping at a book store, ask for assistance in locating books.
